A sailing or rope block has single or multiple pulleys with one or more sheaves enclosed in an assembly between cheeks or chocks. In use, a block is fixed to the end of the line, spar or load to be lifted such as at a transport dock. A rope line is reeved through the sheaves, and through one or more matching blocks at the far end, to make up what's known as a tackle. The lake was named after George Briscoe Kerferd (1831–1889) who was responsible for Beechworth's water scheme. George Briscoe Kerferd was born on 21 January 1831 in Liverpool, England and arrived in Melbourne April 1853. He spent his first years in Australia in Bendigo before settling down in Beechworth as a wine and spirits merchant. He married Ann Martindale on 17th December 1853 at St James Cathedral, Melbourne and between them they had three sons and five daughters. Kerferd began his political and legal career in Beechworth when he was first elected to the Municipal Council in May 1857. Later he would be elected to the Legislative Assembly for the Ovens District in November 1864, and continued to represent the area until February 1886. This photograph is historically significant as it provides insight into the water reserves of Victoria. This is a photograph of Bruce Evans, Member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly, signing the visitors' book at the Orbost High School Golden Jubilee in 1962. In 2012, Orbost Secondary College and the wider community celebrated 100 years of secondary education in Orbost. With earlier levels of schooling available at the Orbost State School or nearby schools of Newmerella and Jarrahmond School, it was not until April 1912, and after much campaigning from parents and other notable community members, that the Orbost Higher Elementary School was opened. Mr Richard Trembath was appointed the new Head teacher of Orbost Higher Elementary School and was assisted by Miss Olga Hirst. The senior class consisted of 26 pupils, and the junior class, 16 pupils. A limited curriculum was available which included lessons in Latin, Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Geography, History, Drawing and advanced English. Buckley for a seat in the legislative assembly in the electoral district of Wangaratta and Rutherglen. The Scripture Referendum had three questions: "1. Although it’s unknown when these two photos were taken, the South African Pattern Mk IV Slotted Template Machine was in service from 1936 to 1952. The machine was used to cut slots and holes in an acetate film medium. This template was then used to fit several runs of aerial photography to ground control points at a desired scale with a substitution of the templates in the assembly. Radial slots on the templates from central holes representing the photograph’s principal point (centre) were placed over hollow metal studs mounted over control points on the scaled base sheet. The studs represented the intersection of radial lines through common points of detail of overlapping photos. A pricker was used to transfer from the photo-points to the templates. The slotted template methodology was later used as an essential aero-triangulation exercise in advance courses conducted at the School of Military Survey.These three photographs are of a slotted template machine used in aero-triangulation. The first two photographs were printed on photographic paper and are part of the Army Survey Regiment’s Collection. The photographs were scanned at 300 dpi. A photo of President Sullivan at Brighton Grammar Junior School presenting a boy, Troy Robinson, with a plaque with the Legacy torch emblem alongside the Junior School Master, Mr Peter Toms. L/ Sullivan is also seen speaking at a school assembly and standing by a tree that had been planted in honour of Legatee Tom Bell in 1989 (see item 01538). The label explains the link to Brighton Grammar Junior School was fostered by the late L/ Tom Bell, although not a past pupil he endeared himself to the school that on his death shortly after the 1989 badge appeal the students planted a tree in his honour at a special memorial service. For many years the boys from Brighton Grammar Junior School raised money from the sale of Legacy badges and the President would present them with a plaque of appreciation. Between 1991and 1995 the boys have raised in excess of $16,000. Photos were in a scrapbook of photos spanning 1983 to 1991. The lake was named after George Briscoe Kerferd (1831–1889) who was responsible for Beechworth's water scheme. George Briscoe Kerferd was born on 21 January 1831 in Liverpool, England and arrived in Melbourne April 1853. He spent his first years in Australia in Bendigo before settling down in Beechworth as a wine and spirits merchant. He married Ann Martindale on 17th December 1853 at St James Cathedral, Melbourne and between them they had three sons and five daughters. Kerferd began his political and legal career in Beechworth when he was first elected to the Municipal Council in May 1857. Later he would be elected to the Legislative Assembly for the Ovens District in November 1864, and continued to represent the area until February 1886.This photograph is historically significant as it provides insight into surrounding areas of the water reserves of Victoria.
