Deep Lead Church (Methodist) A set of six photos taken between 1927 and 1930. The site where this weather board church was situated is directly opposite the brick Deep Lead school on the Western Highway. The sugar gums still remain. At previous times other denominations used the building. 113 Methodist Weatherboard church, Deep Lead with people in the doorway. Out the front is a car parked in front of a picket fence. Printed on back of photo "These photographs were taken between 1927 & 1930. At this time Methodist Church services were conducted there; Sunday school was also held there until about 1936. The church building was sold to the Anderson Family of Dadswell's Bridge and rebuilt into a private home". 113.01 Group of children. Jubilee Primitive Methodist Church. A brick church of 1860 designed by Crouch and Wilson and an unusually early use of the Gothic style by the Primitive Methodists. St. David's Presbyterian Church Parkdale was constructed as an all-purpose hall on three blocks of land at the corner of Evan and McSwain Streets, Parkdale that had been purchased by the Home Mission Department. The hall was opened and dedicated by Rev. Paul Baker on February 11th 1962. The church was named the North Mordialloc Presbyterian Church at this time. The hall was extended in 1966, and in 1973 the church was re-named St. David's Parkdale. In 1977 St. David's became part of the Mordialloc-Parkdale Uniting Church Parish which comprised the former Mordialloc and Parkdale Methodist churches and St. David's Parkdale Presbyterian Church. The last service was held on 6th November 2011, and funds raised from the sale of the buildings were used to renovate the Parkdale Uniting Church. This church was opened on 15th, September 1872, and was constructed over two years at a cost of 4500 pounds. The bluestone was sourced from Dean. Flemington Wesleyan Methodist Church, Mount Alexander Road built in 1865. A Wesleyan church of which the nave of 1865 is typical in its use of brick and contrasting dressings and is a minor variant in the Methodist tradition of token Gothic, with pointed windows and brittle detailing; the spiky octagonal turrets and classical finial being somewhat novel, the porch and the transept (1883) being later additions. The Malvern Congregational Church was built in 1886, replacing the original church built in 1873. The 1886 church was demolished in 1996. In 1940 The Surrey Hills Church of Christ team played in A Grade of the Eastern Suburbs Protestant Churches Football Association. Other clubs competing that season were: Spring Road Methodist, Glendearg Grove Methodist, Burwood Protestant, St.Marys Church of England, Balwyn United, Box Hill Adelphian and Box Hill United. Alan Sneddon played in the team. The inauguration of the Association took place at a meeting held at Camberwell Methodist School Office on the 19 March 1923. The following churches were represented at this meeting: Auburn Presbyterian, Kew Presbyterian, Hawthorn Presbyterian, Camberwell Methodist, Canterbury Methodist and St Marks Church of England, Burke Road and Holy Trinity Church of England, Surrey Hills. From 1923 to 1992 there were at least 160 clubs / teams that competed through the various grades with many of these combining & /or changing names, as well as those that competed irregularly.
