Historical information
This church was opened on 15th, September 1872, and was constructed over two years at a cost of 4500 pounds. The bluestone was sourced from Dean. The St Augustine statue is by Mattei Brothers.
Mattei Brothers and Co. were modellers and figurine manufacturers at 126-132 Greeves Street, Fitzroy. Ferdinando Mattei, Amedeo Mattei and Amato Mattei were skilled in plaster casting, they migrated from Gromignana to Australia in the early 1920s and in 1926 opened their business.
