An example of badges issued by Legacy for fundraising during the Legacy Appeal and Badge Week in 2007. The badges are all stick pins. The total donation value is $110. The wallet was given out to Legatees for them to sell and then bank the proceeds using the banking slip and returning the green form to Legacy House for reconciliation. The badge of Legacy is the Torch and Wreath of Laurel. The Torch signifies the undying flame of service and sacrifice of those who gave their lives for their country. The Wreath of Laurel is the symbol of our remembrance of them. Photos of President Chas Wilks collecting pine cones from the Lone Pine descendant at the Shrine of Remembrance, the 24th Battalion tree. The cones dropped to the ground and school children are seen collecting them. Legacy has run a programme since the 1970s of propagating saplings taken from seeds of pine descended from a pine tree from Gallipoli and giving them to various clubs, schools and town councils. The photo appeared in the President's Highlights report in 1989. The caption says '1,000 seedlings from the historic Lone Pine tree near the Shrine of Remembrance will be propagated on behalf of Melbourne Legacy by the Department of Conservation Forests and Lands. Melbourne President Legatee Chas Wilks, along with the Minister for CFL, Ms Kay Setches and pupils from South Yarra Primary School helped to collect the seeds. The trees, once grown will be distributed to schools by Melbourne Legacy. Also see item at 01334 in 1993 when President Woodward was giving out saplings, it was three years later was when the saplings grown from these seeds were distributed. Legacy is helping to keep the memory of the Gallipoli "Lone Pine" alive - its spirit living on today. The Eltham Obelisk was originally located at the corner of Bridge and Main Roads in 1919. In 1943 (WW2) the local community commenced plans to establish the Eltham War Memorial, a living memorial to benefit the children as opposed to a one in stone as per the obelisk. The Eltham War Memorial Trust was established in 1945. In 1947 the Trust intended for the Obelisk to be relocated from Bridge Street and Main Road to the Garden of Remembrance which was planned as part of the Baby Health Centre which was to be the first of three buildings of the Eltham War Memorial to be built in 1951. In 1951 the Eltham RSL was invited to be represented on the Eltham War Memorial Trust. Around this time, with pending roadworks, the obelisk was relocated to the front garden of the Eltham RSL sub branch on Main Road for safe keeping. In 2007, a suggestion was proposed by Harry Gilham (President, EDHS) to John Cohen (ERSL) to claim a special site along with the historic Shillinglaw trees on the now vacant former Eltham Shire Office site adjacent to the Eltham War Memorial precinct for relocation of the obelisk. In 2010 following the financial collapse and sale of the Eltham RSL Sub-Branch property and amalgamation with the Montmorency Eltham RSL sub-branch, the location of the obelisk was again in immediate jepoardy and in conjunction with Nillumbik Shire Council, the obelisk was relocated in front of the Eltham War Memorial buildings in preparation for the Dawn Service on Anzac Day 2012. Margaret Jukes (nee McWilliams) married Alfred Meredith Jukes in Melbourne in 1853 and they moved to Warrnambool in 1856. She and Alfred had nine children one of whom died in infancy and four who died in young adulthood. Margaret was widowed in 1872, the year of the birth of their youngest child. A report of her funeral service in the Parish Record notes her "aged and much honored life". The hymns chosen "all were in quiet harmony with the remembrance of one whose daily life was an example and who held always a given trust in the over-ruling providence of God". It records the "peaceful closing of a well spent life".The Jukes name is associated with Jukes Street in East Warrnambool, and with the property named "Belvedere" in Ferguson Street, East Warrnambool. ANZAC Day 2021 The Ukrainian Association Sunshine (UAS), joined other community organisations in commemorating ANZAC Day on April 25th 2021. UAS members gathered at the Sunshine RSL cenotaph for the Dawn Service during which, President Andrew Makohon and Oksana Makohon laid a wreath on behalf of the Ukrainian Community. Members and families later gathered at the UAS Hall in Ardeer for a flag raising ceremony and breakfast. Our youngest members took part in raising and then lowering the Australian and Ukrainian flags to half mast, learning about the significance of the ceremony and the importance of Australia’s National Day of Remembrance. Sometimes referred to as Pilgrimage to the Shrine, there was usually a church service, a service at the Shrine and a lunch afterwards. The 6 pages outline the order of service of the ceremony, some background notes on the ANZAC Commemorations, a short history of the Shrine of Remembrance, a story of Legacy and a letter from the President of Melbourne Legacy. They mention the ceremony is telecast on the ABC television channels. They mention is it a 'Circular to Victorian Colleges and Schools' so they were sent to school to publicise the events. There is a letter to the school Principal from the President of Legacy inviting the schools to attend or to listen to the telecast. Two photos show wreaths being laid at the base of the Cenotaph, one of these is by President Geoff Handbury. The a close up of the Geoff Handbury standing with Sir Edmund Herring, Lieutenant-General of Victoria, with the Shrine in the background. Another of the same two men beside other Legatees preparing to march behind a military band (see also 00479). It is possible this is the same event when an Olive Tree of Peace was planted in the western lawn of the Shrine. President Geoff Webb presented a plaque to the Victoria Barracks Melbourne Corps of Guides in acknowledgement of the contribution of the proceeds of the Victoria Barracks Public Tours donations over the past three year, a total of $11,000 to Legacy in that time. A portion of these proceeds was designated to be used for maintenance work on the Legacy statue of the Widow and her Children in the Garden of Appreciation at the Shrine of Remembrance. More than 1,500 people visit Victoria Barracks Melbourne (VBM) each year as part of the Public Tours program conducted by the VBM Corps of Guides. Guided tours of the Barracks in 2005 operated on Wednesdays and Sunday afternoons as required. Wreath laying ceremony for Legacy widows at the Shrine of Remembrance. This is an annual event for Legacy widows at the start of Legacy Week, which is the first week in September. The photos show widows carrying wreaths to be laid in the Garden Courtyard. The plants in the Garden Courtyard have been selected because they are native to the Mediterranean countries in which Australians have served. An olive tree stands as a centrepiece, representing peace. This is the olive tree of peace that was planted by Legacy in 1973 to mark their golden jubilee. It was relocated to the new courtyard in 2002 when the Shrine was being redeveloped. Transcription of the speeches given at a dinner at the Oakleigh Waverley Branch to honour Legatee Frank Doolan, who was a close friend of Stan Savige and a founding member of Melbourne Legacy. It was Doolan who suggested in 1925 that the object of Legacy be changed from the original intention to find work for returned servicemen to looking after the widows and children of those who had died. Although he refused nominations to be President throughout the ensuing years, he served on many committees, working tirelessly in the background. He was also a part of the campaign to build the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance. He recounts the confrontation between Legatee Kemsley and Allan Spowers, the Editor of the Argus. His address at the dinner was self deprecating in tone and contained many interesting anecdotes about famous people he had worked with, including Stan Savige. He tells the story of how the Savige Toby Jug (00198) was created by Herb Greenway for an event to welcome Savige back from WW2, and how as a member of the Anzac Observance Committee he helped to distribute a couple of hundred Lone Pine seedlings around Australia. He also recounts the pride he felt in being asked to plant the Olive Tree of Peace at the Shrine of Remembrance in 1973 as part of the Legacy 50th anniversary celebrations. The olive tree was moved in 2002 into the new courtyard. He talks about being asked to propose the toast of Legacy at the 1965 Perth Conference and recounted part of what he said. He used the analogy of the cause of Legacy being like a cloak with threads of gold and silver, interwoven with the efforts of Legatees. The photo shows a group of Legatees who attended the 13th Annual Legacy Club Conference held in April 1940 in Launceston. The names are not known. The Legacy conference was held periodically, often annually, and allowed Legatees from across Australia to gather together. The aim of the annual conference was an exchange of ideas and methods of carrying out Legacy functions, and to form general policy for cooperation between clubs and groups. From TROVE. Australia Post issued a stamp featuring the Legacy Torch. It will be in general circulation as well as available as commemorative packs and first day covers. The stamp design presents the iconic branding of Legacy Australia and echoes the colours of the Australian flag. The torch design prominently placed in the stamp represents the undying flame of service and sacrifice, the foundation of Legacy’s existence. The body of the torch is presented in a gold colour, signifying generosity and compassion. In its wreath of laurel, with its points inverted in remembrance, is the guerdon of honour, to represent those who gave their lives for their country. A Legacy ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance. One of the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" events, usually held just prior to ANZAC Day. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. The year is unknown but barricades and flagpole are similar to the 1945 photos. The photos are an aerial view of the crowd and the flagpole, with the Australian flag at half mast, as viewed from the Shrine balcony. Items were in an envelope with other photos and programmes from different School Student ceremonies. A photo of Jim Tierney who was an employee of Legacy for many years. Jim Tierney was the first paid instructor employed by Legacy for physical training classes in 1927. Later he lived at Legacy's Market St premises as a caretaker until he retired in 1953. The photo was used in an article in the Legacy Newsletter. The article shows his long history of service. An article in The Age 6 Jan 1953 mentions that Jim Tierney was the first paid instructor employed by Legacy for physical training classes in 1927 and was listed in demonstration programmes as 'James Tierney FPCV, Chief Instructor Boys Section'. A badge that was produced to promote a Vietnam Veterans' Motorcycle ride around Australia in 1996 in support of Legacy. An article in Trove shows a VetAffairs newsletter in July 1996 saying that 110 Vietnam veteran bikers spent 46 days in May and June 1996 riding over 14,000 kms to connect with veterans around the country. The Vietnam Veterans' Motorcycle Club organised the ride to raise awareness for Legacy who was looking after more than 122,000 widows and 2,000 children throughout Australia. The symbol of Legacy is the Torch and Wreath of Laurel. The Torch signifies the undying flame of service and sacrifice of those who gave their lives for their country. The Wreath of Laurel is the symbol of our remembrance of them.
