"The water storage tank (the ‘golf ball’ tower) was located in Cassells Road, and for many years it played an important role in supplying the Research and Eltham communities with drinking water. However, due to prior upgrades of water supply infrastructure in the area, these communities are receiving their water supply in a more reliable way. The storage tank was no longer operating and as it no longer served a purpose, the time had come for it to be removed. Decommissioning works occurred between November 2016 and January 2017, and the tower was removed in March 2017." The 19th of May marks the anniversary of the turning of the first sod of the outfall sewer. In 1888, a Royal Commission into Melbourne’s public health led to an ambitious plan to construct a sewerage system of underground pipes, sewers and drains to carry sewage from homes and factories to a sewage treatment farm. The commission also supported the establishment of the Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW), the authority that would build the sewerage system and manage Melbourne’s water supply. Water scheme trust was created by the Governor in Council, 23/1/1963 and consisted of 3 Councilors of the Axedale Riding of the Shire of Strathfieldsaye and 3 members appointed by the Minister of Water Supply. The waterworks opened in April 1964Exercise book from the Axedale Waterworks Trust containing list of names and amounts of money due. Several receipts are either stapled to the book or loose inside issued to the trust by various businesses: Modern supplies, D. Smyth and son, Hardware Co. of Australia, Country Roads Bendigo J.G. Hibberd. Several other loose handwritten pieces of paper are inside, mostly recording payments or money dues also, two water reading slips, a notice of extraordinary meeting and an estimated receipts and expenditure for the year ending 31st December 1966. A newspaper article with photo of Mr. John Giovanetti, secretary of Bendigo Sewerage Authority is also included. The book covers the years from 1963 to 1966. Built 1942 - 43 to ensure as adequate water supply for fire fighting purposes, after the devastation of the 1939 forest fires. The photo shows a small weir on the Stoney Creek which used to supply water to a number of early businesses in Halls Gap. The weir's former level can be seen on the large rocks behind but once a town water supply was installed, the wall of the weir was breached. Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans died on 7th July 2007. This Collection of documents and letters tells the story of Bob's endeavours to develop Falls Creek into the ski village it is today.This item is significant because it documents actions taken by the Falls Creek Tourist Area Management Committee in their role overseeing the Tourist Area.A circular to all prospective builders at Falls Creek to advise them that each organisation proposing to erect any building or structure at Fells Creek must furnish satisfactory assurances of its financial ability to complete the development. The water tank stands on Sunbury Railway station and was in use when steam trains were used along Bendigo line. After travelling 37 kms (25 miles) from Melbourne, it was necessary for the trains to replenish their water supply at Sunbury. Members of the Women’s Royal Australian Army Corps (WRAAC) were posted to Army Reserve units in the 1980s and 1990s. They were rarely posted to Armoured Fighting Vehicles (AFVs) but were invaluable in the A1 Echelon driving fuel, ammunition, ration and water supply vehicles. Establishment and Functions Prior to 1860, the Chief Secretary's Department had been responsible for the administration of the gold fields and associated mining activities. In November 1860 a Commissioner of Mines was appointed and a Department was established under his administration. For the period November 1861 to June 1863, the Postmaster General was responsible for the Mining Department. A Minister of Mines was again appointed in 1863. Responsibilities of the Department of Mines were: 1. Regulation of mining and related public works activities through the issue of miners rights, business and residence licences, mining leases, mineral and other prospecting licences 2. Superintendence of the activities of mining surveyors, registrars, wardens and Mining Boards. 3. Investigation of the state's geological structure, mineral wealth and underground water resources 4. Development of the mining industry 5. Supervision of the safe working of mines, machinery and quarries including checking the credential of mine managers, inspectors and operators 6. Regulation of the disposal of sludge and other waste products 7. Administration of the Victorian Mining Accident Relief Fund. Arising from its initial responsibility for the supply of water on the gold fields, the Department became responsible for rural water supply from the mid 1860s. Statutory responsibility for rural water works during this period rested with the Board of Land and Works. In 1865 the Waterworks Act gave the Board power to construct waterworks, purchase land, levy charges and lease or sell works, while the Public Loans Act 1865 empowered it to provide loans to local water trusts for waterworks. The actual administration of these statutory provisions was undertaken by the Victorian Water Supply Department which operated from 1865 to 1889 as a sub-department of the Department of Mines, from 1889 as a department in its own right, and from 1895 to 1909 as a sub-department of the Department of Mines and Water Supply. For a brief period from 1891 to 1893 the Department of Mines was also responsible for forests and, until 1880, for the Schools of Mines subsequently transferred to the Education Department. In 1895 the Department of Mines and the Victorian Water Supply Department were amalgamated to form the Department of Mines and Water Supply. This crystal goblet was presented to Mrs. T. O'Brien (Margaret O'Brien nee Leyden) on 26 January 1915 when the Starkie Memorial was unvieled by the then Shire President Cr. O'Brien. The Starkie drinking fountain was erected to commemorate the work done by Joseph Starkie to formation of the Sunbury Waterworks Trust in 1905. This later led to the establishment of a water supply system in Sunbury. Originally the fountain was at the intersection of O'Shanassy and Brook Streets. As the shopping centre expanded, the fountain was moved to a reserve in the Village Green.
