Invoice issued to 'Mr. Lewis' (i.e. Lewers) [Manager of the Bank of New South Wales at Linton from Hugh Gray & Son, of Ballarat, for cleaning, lacquering and adjusting gold beam and scales. Mary Jane Rankin was born in 1884 to parents Ewen and Anna Rankin (née Woods). She was a pupil teacher at Linton State School, and later was Head Teacher at Happy Valley State School. She played tennis, sang in the Presbyterian Church choir and was involved in community organisations such as the CWA throughout her life. Dr George Scantlebury (1860-1923) was a medical practitioner in Linton in the late 1880s. While practising there, he married the local postmistress Catherine Millington Baynes. Their first child Vera (born at Linton in 1889) also became a doctor, served overseas during World War 1 and was later recruited by the Victorian Health Department to establish Infant Welfare Centres around the state. The reunion was held during Easter 1936, from 10th to 13th April. Its highlight was a visit by the Moorabbin City Band, which performed at various events including a Grand Concert on Easter Saturday. Eliza Cameron, a daughter of Ewen and Marion Cameron, was born at Linton in 1869. Linton Football Club won the premiership in 1922. This is one of several copies of the photograph in the LDHS collection. Bunde Hansen Steenholdt, a miner, lived at Linton from about 1865. Miss Milne was a teacher at Linton State School for many years. It is understood she is the Assistant Teacher in the photograph of school pupils and teachers, c.1888. (Registration no. 179). Miss Milne's efforts at training the children for school concerts were often commended in newspaper reports. Linton Presbyterian Church records held at show that Helen Milne was a communicant from 1886, having transferred from Inglewood. The 'Ballarat Star', 2 July 1902, p. 6, reported that Miss Milne had been presented with a gold brooch and purse, as she had been transferred to another school and was leaving Linton. Built 1860 as Bank of New South Wales - banking chambers and residence. Sold 1903 to Mr Lewers (son of Samuel Lewers, first manager of the bank in Linton). Lived in by members of the Lewers family until the 1950s. Stella Surman nee Todd bought the building when she returned to live in Linton c.1962. Jim and Cynthia Mason ran an antique and Devonshire tea restaurant 1981-84. John Wearne migrated to Victoria from Cornwall in 1853. He was living in the Lintons/Smythesdale district by 1858, where he had mining interests. He married Ann McGie in 1865, after his first wife Selina Harris (married 1858) died in 1860. John and Ann Wearne had ten children, all born at Linton. The white corner building was formerly a fruit and vegetable shop which was run by various generations of the Preston family, the last of whom was George Preston. The shop closed in the 1970s and this photo taken in 1988 shows it without its original verandah. This building was formerly the Methodist Church in Linton, built in 1913 to replace an earlier timber building, and used as a church until 1977. Carrie Rogers Murrell, b.1905 at Daylesford, was a daughter of William Murrell and his wife Lily, née Clarke/Young. She was a grand-daughter of Ambrose and Mary Murrell. Carrie Murrell attended Linton State School, completing Grade 8 in 1n 1918. She then assisted her father in the Linton newsagency, before taking over as its manager, a role she enjoyed for some seventy years. In 1932 she moved the business from its site on the west side of Sussex Street to the east side, into a shop next to the Railway Hotel that had previously been run as a shoe shop by Dan Cornish. This shop remained as the Linton Newsagency until Carrie retired. It is now used as a private residence. The rectangular white damask tablecloth was owned by Mrs Murrell (Lily Murrell, née Young, wife of William Murrell) who ran the Linton newsagency during the 1930s and 1940s. Mrs Murrell asked people who came into the newsagency to sign and date the cloth, and later she embroidered the names and dates in various coloured thread. Traditionally such ‘signature cloths’ were used as a fundraiser for charity purposes and date back to the 1890s at least. They were at their height of popularity during World War I and the inter-war period, often embroidered in red or blue. The Linton tablecloth has a number of signatures and dates, some not embroidered, the dates ranging from 1931 to 1945.
