This kettle would have been used on top of a wood stove to boil water to make tea and other beverages and to use for other household purposes. It would have been a common household item in Australian homes from the beginning of European settlement up about the mid 20th century when wood stoves, although still in use in many country areas, were largely superseded by gas or electric stoves in most households. The kettle was made of durable material as it usually remained on the top of the stove for most of the day so that hot water was readily available. A bachelor farmer, Michael worked on the selection property at East Towaninnie.He and his unmarried sister, Ellen Forrester, inherited some of the parents' land, sold it and lived out their final years at Quambatook. The Wied family were settled in Palestine upon the beginning of WWII. Being of German nationality, they were considered a threat to security by Allied forces & were interned in temporary camps, before being shipped to Australia. In Australia they were interned in Camp 3, Tatura, a family camp for enemy nationals. Many of the internees came with few possessions. This item is just one of the handmade domestic items fashioned in the camp from largely scrap materials to give some home comforts in the initially barren surroundings of the camps, particularly to those interned with families and young children. Artist's Statement: "Every Wednesday at 10 o'clock in the morning, from the beginning of Winter, 2011 to the end of Autumn, 2012, I photographed the same scene in my Ballarat garden. While the main subject is the weather of the moment, it includes a walnut tree killed in the recent drought, and a deciduous ornamental plum. There are 52 Wednesdays recorded in the tapestry; and 4 frames showing the seasonal changes in the plum tree. The colours bordering each panel are those of deciduous leaves on trees in my garden that week. 1923 trophy for Athletics presented by Emeritus Professor Pollard. During his first year at Mentone, in 1923, six-year-old Alfred Hurlstone Pollard won the 75 yards race and despite such a minor event, received this expensive silver cup. From very humble beginnings Alf would later become one of Australia’s most outstanding actuaries, having made particularly important contributions in the field of actuarial education. The hallmarked silver trophy was inscribed by the Pollard family and donated back to the School 80 years after it was awarded.

The D26 is an authentic outrigger logging barge - one of four that were towed by P.S. Adelaide for 80 years of its working life. In 1987 Council purchased the barge from Deakin Shire in South Australia for $15,000. However, its restoration was put on hold until the crew had completed work on the P.S. Enterprise, eventually beginning in 1988 using local red gum. The barge was relaunched at Echuca East on Australia Day, 1990. The D26 remains at the Port of Echuca and on special occasions can be seen being towed by the P.S. Adelaide for demonstrations.

Tait collection: item 42 of 62 This is a document giving details of the Will and Probate of Patrick White, a farmer from Codrington who died in 1883. He left personal estate to the value of £316, with the beneficiaries being his wife, Eleanor and his son George. The lawyer concerned with this document was Ernest Chambers who had legal offices in Port Fairy, Koroit and Warrnambool at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. He had possession of this document and it was passed down to successive lawyers occupying the legal premises in Kepler Street, Warrnambool and located in this Kepler Street building in 2014. This document is of minor significance as Patrick White was not a resident of Warrnambool. The interest lies in the fact that the lawyer, Ernest Chambers, practised in Warrnambool in the 19th centuryThis is a cream-coloured piece of parchment paper containing details of the Will and Probate of Patrick White of Codrington who died in 1883. The paper is folded in two and the edges of the pages have blue lines ruled on them. There is handwritten material (black ink) on three of the pages. The seal of the Supreme Court of Victoria is attached with olive-green ribbon and there are five red stamps of the Master in Equity of the Supreme Court. This is a reader produced for schools in Victoria in 1909. It contains many simple fables and stories and some phonetic instruction at the beginning of the short articles. It has no specific Australian content. The inscription includes the name ‘Stanley Bell’. There were several Bell families in the Wangoom area early in the 20th century, including one teacher associated with the Wangoom State School. Stanley Bell may have belonged to one of these families. Walter Davies had a book shop in Timor Street, Warrnambool from the late 19th century and three generations of the Davies family were proprietors of this shop over the years. This book is of educational and social interest as an example of the readers used by primary school children in the early 20th century. This is a soft cover book of 80 pages. The cover is brown with black printing. The pages are partly torn across and very tattered. The inscriptions are handwritten in black ink and pencil and there is some scribble on the first pages. This book gives the history of the Public Record Office, Victoria. It was written by Professor Bill Russell and produced in 2003. The research by Charlie Farrugia that enabled the book to be written was carried out entirely using the Public Record Office archives. The book documents the 1903 beginnings of the Public Record Office from a small collection in the possession of the Melbourne Public Library through to the important 1973 Victorian Public Records Act to the present day institution at North Melbourne. The Melbourne Public Library, the Historical Society of Victoria and the History School of the University of Melbourne were early contributors to the preservation of Victoria’s archives. This book is in the library of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society and is an important reference for us in regard to the history of archival preservation of historical documents in our State. In addition we are a Place of Deposit for historical records that are surplus to the requirements of the Public Record Office of Victoria and that concern more directly the history of Warrnambool and district. Many local Warrnambool and district residents use the facilities at the Public Record Office at North Melbourne and the link between that institution and Warrnambool historical groups is important. This is a hard cover book of 227 pages. The cover is black with gold lettering on the spine. The dust cover is dark red with printed material about the author and the book’s contents. The front of the dust cover has an illustration of four Victorian Railways ledgers in sepia tones and the back of the dust cover has a small illustration in brown and white of a heritage label. This cup was produced by Ken Sadler as a souvenir of the 150th anniversary of the settlement of Warrnambool. Ken Sadler was a potter in Liebig Street, Warrnambool for many years (end of 20th century and beginning of 21st century). Warrnambool was founded as a planned town in 1847 to provide port facilities for the produce of squatters who had settled in the area. The town centre was surveyed by William Pickering at the request of Superintendent La Trobe of Melbourne and the first land sales were held in Melbourne in July 1847. The celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of Warrnambool included concerts, race meetings, church services and the erection of an anniversary tablet on Cannon Hill. Ken Sadler, a well-known Warrnambool potter, made 500 of these cups which are now collectible souvenirs of the city’s 150th anniversary celebrations. This one retained by the Warrnambool and District Historical Society is numbered 189. The 150th anniversary of the founding of Warrnambool was an important event in the city’s history.This is a ceramic cup with a round base and larger rounded body with a round overhanging rim at the top opening. From the 1970's onward the relative isolation of regional areas was improving in "leaps and bounds". Social amenities, and life styles were changing at a great rate. Items such as this camera (recreational/life style/non professional) capture of the altering socio economic balance of rural based activities provided the catalyst for greater appreciation by city dwellers to the benefits of rural life. The greater levels of communicative avenues, especially the visual (photography, pictures, television and the internet), from the beginning of this period and throughout the time frame (1970 to the 2000s) has cut the major restraints of what was rural "isolationism".The significance of this type of camera, being a small two lens (normal, telescopic) and portable piece of equipment, allowed non professional tourists, locals or visitors to visually display the uniqueness of the Kiewa Valley and Alpine regions. The donor George Lister Coop was about 21 years of age when he took this photo. It is one of a small series of photos donated by him that relate to Mont Albert and Surrey Hills stations. He has always had an interest in railways and there are other examples of his documentation of railway history in other collections contributing to this database. R J Mercer was the butcher at 112 Union Road. This property has a long history of being a butcher's shop beginning from c1904. He took over from Edward Lloyd in 1951. Spotless Dry Cleaners were at 104 Union Road.This is an important photo as there are few known colour images of the station prior to the installation of the third line in the early 1970s, which resulted in the demolition of the station built in 1883. It is also significant as a record of the housing along the south side of Stirling Crescent which was later replaced by light industry.A digital colour photo of Surrey Hills railway station taken from the overhead pedestrian footbridge looking towards Canterbury. This sculpture could have be constructed and gifted to the Royal Blind Society of New South Wales by a Canberra based artist. It has resided at several Vision Australia sites, including St Kilda Road, Macaulay Road and Glenferrie Road, and brought much joy to those who saw it as part of their daily work routine and adorned her with a string of beads. Christened 'Amelia' by staff in 2012, her paper coating was beginning to deteriorate over the years with the woollen fur covering coming apart from her hump. The note from the Public Relations Committee mentions this document 'Fifty Years On' and 'In the beginning', both written by Legatee Armstrong were a fine contribution to the Annual Report in 1973, and were being sent to the printers. (In the beginning is at 01505). L/ Armstrong mentions the committees and the order they were created in. 1) Comradeship Committee: 'this is the driving force of Legacy. The spirit of Legacy is Service and the body of Legacy is Comradeship, - the comradeship of men who suffered privations and pain, faced death and disaster together, was the inspiration and source of Legacy'. 2) Policy and Programme: Legacy began as a Luncheon club and has remained so ever since. 3) Unemployment. 4) Public Affairs 5) Deceased Soldiers' Children's Welfare: It directed and controlled all the Club's work with and for the Children. The precursor of JLC. 6) Problem cases 7) Advisory 8) Girls Classes: with the success of the boys classes there was a demand for something for the girls. He mentions the fight to build the Shrine. Also the rooms in Market street were rented in 1932 after years of meeting at houses and in restaurants. Historical look (early 20th century) at the administrative requirements for the running of a small country school. The level of accountability was limited to a monthly report and a visit from the District Inspector. This was still in the era where paper reporting was utmost and faster electronic reporting had still to be implemented.The significance of this register is that it highlights the need in the early 1900s for travelling time, to and from, the duties required at a small country town to be detailed closely for a bureaucracy that was relatively isolated within the larger cities of Australia. Decentralisation of not only government but also of industry had not as yet entered the Australian environment. This register also shows that the written word was clearly hand scribed and thereby a more personal form of communication. This was still in the age where you " can tell a lot about a person from their handwriting" Lucy Goonan was Leonie Prime's relation and came from Glen Creek to teach at Mullindolingong School for a couple of years. In the beginning of the19th century, the main mode of transportation was the horse and carriage. Even after the advent of the railway, remote areas still relied on the horse for local transport.Until Australian coachbuilders began making buggies from the 1860s, most were made in America Buggies with four wheels were light but comfortable. Many had hoods to keep the sun and rain off passengers. They were generally owned by doctors, ‘squatters’ and business people. Some had small turn-out seats at the back for children.
