Alfred William Eustace (1820-1907), an Australian artist, was born in Berkshire, England, where he was an assistant gamekeeper to the Earl of Craven at Ashdown Park. He migrated to Australia with his wife and children in 1851 and camped beside the Ullina and Eldorado Runs on the Black Dog Creek at Chiltern, which was in excess of 50,000 acres of grazing land. A.W. Eustace was employed as a shepherd by Jason Withers and while tending his flocks in the solitude of the bush, Eustace turned his attention to painting and music to while away the long and weary hours. He endeavoured to capture the spirit of the bush and painted on board, canvas or tin plate, but as these materials were not always readily available he then started painting on large round eucalyptus leaves from the White and Red Box trees that grew around about him. He became known as the "Bush Artist." About 1856 he painted a small picture of the famous Woolshed goldrush and during the next few years became well known in North-East Victoria. John Sadlier, a police officer stationed at Beechworth said that Eustace painted 'some really exquisite scenes. He was of an easy-going dreamy temperament, a student of nature only, despising the works of men. Unfortunately his drawings were on eucalyptus leaves, the largest and roundest he could find and not on canvas, and no doubt have all perished long ago.' In 1876 the Melbourne Age newspaper reported, 'Eustace’s celebrated paintings on gum leaves are again attracting attention,…Mr Eustace is an elegant artist…he seems without effort to catch the colour and spirit of Australian scenery…' In 1864 A.W. Eustace held an Art Union in Albury, and again in 1884 in Ballarat. He exhibited at the Victorian Academy of Arts in 1877 and also held an exhibition of gum leaf paintings at Stevens Gallery, Melbourne in 1893. By 1896 he was receiving orders from heads of states in Europe, with his works acknowledged by Queen Victoria, Emperor Frederick of Germany and the Czar of Russia, as well as the Governors of New South Wales and Victoria. His paintings reflected his ability to paint the sky in his realistic style which is still noted by art critics of the day. A.W. Eustace was also a skilful taxidermist. The collection of birds and animals that can be seen at the Beechworth Museum are examples of his taxidermy skill. When not doing his work, painting or taxidermy, he regularly contributed letters and verse to the Chiltern newspaper, The Federal Standard. A book of verse in his hand writing was presented to The Athenaeum Trust by the Boadle family. In the 1870’s he became interested in spiritualism often being involved in lively debate at lectures and séances. Alfred William Eustace died in 1907 and is buried in the Chiltern New Cemetery with his wife Sarah and one of his daughters, Elizabeth. A.W. Eustace was a significant member of the Chiltern community during the 19th century and his artwork was displayed widely, even in European royal homes.Copy of sepia photograph of A.W. 'Skin, Surfaces and Shadows' was created by Tommaso Durante in 2004 during his stay in Bundanon (gifted to the Australian people by Arthur & Yvonne Boyd - South East Australia) as international artist in residence and it was enriched during the artist’s stay in Broome (Western Australia) in 2005. On that occasion he collected the raw materials that were subsequently wrought to develop the actual bookwork.On the edge of artistic practice and philosophical inspiration, 'Skin, Surfaces and Shadows' pushes the boundaries of art, craft and design by combining digital technologies with traditional techniques and materials. Durante visually explores the surfaces of organic things (trees, surface textures, etc.) and the figurative dividing line of the shadow. The poet Wallace-Crabbe responds to these images in words. Large cardboard-backed scrapbook found within National Wool Museum. May have originally been part of a display. Scrapbook contains dozens of auction notices for various properties around the Geelong region, many of them auctioned through Dennys Lascelles & Austin Co, or Strachan, Murray & Shannon Co. Auction notices are undated. Some have hand-written notes about who bought the property or if it was passed in. No indication on who compiled the book.Navy blue cloth-wrapped cardboard front and back cover book, with a red spine and corners. Book has paper pages with dozens of pages containing an auction notice attached. Auction notices relate to properties auctioned through local Geelong woolbrokers. There are several loose auction notice copies which are sitting on pages with a copy attached. -

Manual, [Hattersley] Standard Loom Tuners Handbook: Setting instructions
This handbook contains the setting instructions for a Standard Hattersley Loom developed by George Hattersley and Sons Ltd. The Hattersley loom was developed by George Hattersley and Sons of Keighley, West Yorkshire, England. The company had been started by Richard Hattersley after 1784, with his son, George Hattersley, later entering the business alongside him. The company developed several innovative looms, of which the Hattersley Standard Loom – developed in 1921 – was a great success. The Hattersley Standard Loom was designed and built in 1921. Thousands of models were expected to be sold, which would bring considerable financial success to the company. After the recapitalisation boom of 1919, cotton yarn production peaked in 1926 and further investment was sparse. Rayon, an artificial silk, was invented in the 1930s in nearby Silsden, and the Hattersley Silk Loom was adapted to weave this new fabric. An example of this type of loom can be seen on Vic Collections here ( https://victoriancollections.net.au/items/54065d0f9821f50e3cc9c122 ) and is also on display within the National Wool Museum in Geelong, Victoria. In 1978 a new campus for Williamstown Grammar, named Westbourne, was established at Truganina to accommodate the new secondary school. The first year 12 class graduated in 1983 and to commemorate this historic event, the Year 12 art and signature book was begun. Since 1983, each Year 12 group has nominated a student to create an artwork, which in many cases represents a theme that was important to the Year 12 cohort at the time, to be signed by each student of Year 12. The practice quickly became to create the artwork on a separate sheet of paper and paste it across the fold of each consecutive double page spread. The book, opened at the entry of the graduating class, would then be displayed at the Year 12 Valedictory Dinner each year.This books commemorates each graduating year 12 class since the establishment of the secondary campus at Truganina. It is an example of beginning community building traditions for the new school.Red vinyl bound book with tan-coloured suede corners and spine. The front cover features gold embossed lettering of the school name above a school logo (self-adhesive applied after manufacture) with further embossed gold lettering 'Year 12' below. Artworks on paper have been adhered across bifold pages of the book, using unknown adhesive, each year between 1983 and 2018. Adhered pages contain mixed media. This book provides an overview of the history of quilts in Australia. It was written by well known quilt historian, Annette Gero. She curated an exhibition on historic Australian quilts for the National Trust of Australia (NSW) which was held at Old Government House, Paramatta between 5 June and 22 August 2000. This book is published in conjunction with the exhibition. A quilt now owned by the National Wool Museum (W3157) was display in this exhibition (although it does not feature in the book). Wedding Gown, 1871
The wedding gown was worn by Lucy Kneeshaw Prout for her marriage to John Sommers on 29th November, 1871 at Trinity Church of England and Ireland, Williamstown, Victoria. Lucy was born in Woolwich, Kent, England in August 1850 and immigrated to Australia with her family in 1852 on the 'SS Coromandel'. She was the youngest of five children. Their parents were Edward and Elizabeth Prout (nee Hall). Lucy died in 1940 - 90 years of age. John E. Sommers was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1846 and emigrated to Australia with his family in June 1853 on the 'Tongataboo'. His marriage certificate shows that he was an engineer. He studied at the National Gallery's School of Design under both Clark and Campbell from 1872 to 1879. He drew a compressed charcoal and pencil portrait of Fred McCubbin in 1876. The portrait was displayed in the Golden Summers exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria in 1985 and is shown on page 40 of the Golden Summers catalogue. Their grand-daughter, Mrs Marjorie Gibson (born 1910) said he was associated with the Heidelberg School and the Box Hill Artists Camp. He is also noted in the 'Book of Australian Artists'. He exhibited prolifically with the Victorian Artists Society until his resignation in 1898. In 1881 John Sommers took employment with the Education Department at Castlemaine (Ref. Golden Summer catalogue - pages 26 and 40). John died in 1930 aged 84 years. John and Lucy Sommers children John and Dora both studied at the National Gallery of Victoria, so senior was added to John E. Sommers Senior's works. There is a short biography on page 26 of Golden Summers. Researched by Valda and Ted Arrowsmith May 2006.One piece old gold Paper Taffeta wedding gown, stand up collar, piped in green taffeta. Forty covered buttons from neck to hemline. Shaped sleeve with 15cm cuff and three buttons. Two rows of seven cm appliqued green and gold shaped fans along hemline. Two rows of green and gold piping and 8cm deep gold fringe. Back of dress has central panel of pleats and six covered buttons and a square cut hem line for the train at back.
