Roper's Hut was built in 1939 and was burnt down in 2003. It was rebuilt in 2008 and is situated on the Bogong High Plains on Duane Spur (where Duane's hut had been before it too was destroyed by (1939) bushfires, between Mt Nelse and Big River. The original hut was used as a shelter for cattlemen who grazed their cattle on the High Plains during summer. The Victorian High Country Huts Association Inc. members and friends helped rebuild the hut which is now used as an emergency shelter for visitors to the High Plains.The memorabilia is significant as the items belonged to the Roper family who were one of the original settlers of the Kiewa Valley and one of the original families who drove their cattle up to the Bogong High Plains. The burnt plaque and forks and the rebuilding of the huts (Duane's & Roper's) are significant as bush fires are a constant threat to the Bogong High Plains destroying large areas at a time.1. Carmel Welsh Church is located at 365 Albert Street, Sebastopol and is the only identified Welsh Presbyterian church surviving in Victoria,. It was built in 1865-6 to the design of Henry Richards Caselli, and of distinctive architectural character combining round arched windows of almost a Renaissance character, mediaevalising buttresses, and extremely chunky gable eaves of a domestic character, including square finials and raking brackets. The Album was compiled by Nancy McHaffie late 1990's, with the assistance of Edith Jeffery's, with her book "Garden of Memories" and extensive knowledge of Phillip Island. The Cemetery lies back from the road and is surrounded by Manna Gums, rare Peppermint Gums, Blackwoods and other native trees. In all 25 acres of land were set aside as Crown Land in the land settlement of 1868. There are 6.2 acres of wetlands near the cemetery entrance.466-42: Thomas William Hobbs BEM. Thomas was born in England and came to the Island in the 1920's to work for the Chicory Farmers. He later owned his own farm at Ventnor and won the Better Farming Competition conducted by the Phillip Island Council. He was always an active community worker. Thomas was a Councillor and served two terms as President. He was the only resident to be awarded the British Empire Medal, Civil Division, for services to Phillip Island. Thomas died 1980 aged 75. His wife Catherine died 1991 aged 87. 466-43: Matilda Richardson. Matilda was born at Kyneton on 12th July 1865 and came to Cowes with her parents in 1869. She attended Cowes Primary School with her brothers and sisters. She became ill in November 1872 and died on 10th February 1873 aged 8 years and 7 months, from a severe bout of Quinsy. It was a great sadness to the family and they went to a lot of trouble to secure Matilda a fine grave in the cemetery. This large framed photograph once hung in the Kew Town Hall in Walpole Street. It marked the occasion when Kew became a city. It is an important record of a significant civic event by a nationally significant photographer. A very large, framed portrait of the elected councillors of the City of Kew in 1921. The photograph was taken by the nationally important photographer, Josiah Barnes who had until recently been a resident of Kew. He was to die in the same year that the photograph was taken. Eleanor Hinde (1842-1902) was born in Lancashire England. In 1858, Eleanor married Richard Reynolds in the Forest Street Wesleyan Methodist Church in Sandhurst. They both gave their address as Sailors Gully Goldfields. They had seven children together. Richard was a skilled tradesman and after he died in 1872 from lung disease, Eleanor married Arculus Opie. Eleanor owned a property on the corner of Gladstone and Stanley Streets which later became an electrical substation. She sold poultry and eggs and preserves. The four folders contain family history documents and photos of the descendants of Eleanor Hinde. Crib Pail owned by John Tom Clifton. His mother Frances Clifton re-married after his death to Thomas Harvey and it was held by the Harvey family It was loaned by Leonard Harvey to the organisers of the Great Australasia Mining Disaster Centenary Committee 1982 but then presented by his family to the museum in his memory.It is the only known article from the New Australasian No.2 Gold Mining Disaster. It was reported that three were removed from the mine at the time of the disaster. The Bellingham Billy rusted when left in a shed. Manley's was believed to have been lostThe round crib pail is made of tin and is badly rusted. A crib pail was used by miners to carry their food down the mines. The lid is missing. This pail was taken down the mine by John Tom Clifton and he wrote a message on it before he died in the New Australasian No.2 Gold Mining Disaster 1882. Charles George De Beauvoir Tupper was the son of Daniel William and Elizabeth Tupper. He entered naval college in 1885 after securing a Royal Navy cadetship. Lieutenant Tupper transferred from HMS Swallow to HMS Racer in May 1893. Both ships were operating from the Cape of Good Hope station at the time. In September 1893 HMS Racer found itself in the middle of Brazil’s third military coup in four years. The squadron of British ships in Guanabara Bay comprised HMS Beagle, Racer and Sirius. Just before 2 pm on the afternoon of 3 November 1893 a party from each of the ships in the British squadron sailed up the harbour to obtain sand and enjoy a little land based recreation. Apparently, this was a weekly event and the sand was used to swab the ships’ decks. They landed on Governador Island, the largest of the hundred and thirty or so islands in the bay. The island was under the control of the navy insurgents and had two magazines or stores for powder and shells. The cutters from the HMS Racer and Beagle landed on the beach between the two stores. Charles was killed when the powder magazine exploded at 3.40 pm. Charles' father Daniel William Tupper was brevetted Colonel in 1866 and when Brigadier General George Jackson Carey was appointed to command the Australian forces and came to Melbourne, Daniel accompanied him. When Sir Charles Darling, the Governor of Victoria was recalled to England, Carey became Acting Governor of Victoria from May to August 1866. Daniel Tupper served as his Aide-de-Camp or private secretary during this time. Carey returned to England in 1867 to command the 2nd Infantry Brigade at Aldershot with Daniel Tupper as his Aide-de-Camp.Portrait with stained wooden frame. No glass covering the picture. Pilot Officer Robert Charles CARVER, 24, was a career air force officer in No. 2 Squadron, RAAF. On 3 November 1970 the Canberra bomber in which he was in disappeared from a radar screen while returning from a night bombing mission in the northern I Corps Tactical Zone of South Vietnam. An extensive aerial search of the area failed to find any trace of the aircraft or crew and was called off after three days. In April 2009 the wreckage of the Canberra bomber was located in thick jungle in Quang Nam Province near the Laotian border. Human remains discovered near the site were identified in July 2009 as those of Carver and his crew and were repatriated to Australia on 31 August 2009 for burial in separate military funerals.White Wooden Cross with red knitted poppy with green and black centre.
