The Calendar features a painting by the French artist Maurice Levis featuring a painting of a French river flowing through a large castle town, on the left side there is a family of three about to push their boat into the river.. Vestas are the historical name for what are now known as matches. They were named for the Roman goddess Vesta whose domain was the hearth and home. The Swan company began production of short matches, mostly useful for lighting pipes and cigarettes due to their deliberately short length. Due to their small size it became convenient to carry these Vestas within a Vesta Case kept somewhere on the person, large enough to contain enough matches for a days use. The cases prevented their contents from becoming damaged and damp while also stopping them from accidentally striking if held loose in a pocket. Mr Carl Otto (Clyde) Drevermann was born at Lucknow and worked in various parts of Victoria before coming to Orbost in about 1902. In July 1902 he entered into partnership with Mr Edward Fisher Reynolds and the ironmongery, hardware and tinsmithing business was carried on by the new firm as Drevermann and Reynolds. In about 1905 Mr Drevermann assumed proprietorship and the tinsmith and plumbing section of the business was sold off to Mr Edward Swan. The ironmongery, hardware and timber business was known as Carl Dreverman & Co until 1917 when it was changed to Orbost Hardware and Timber Co. This shop had a row of nails on the window sill to prevent people sitting on the ledge. Carl Drevermann was a prominent Orbost identity and the Drevermann family owned the current Orbost Hardware Store for many years. Clyde [Carl] Drevermann died on 15/11/1946 aged 72. He was born in Lucknow and went into partnership with E P Reynolds on 9/8/1902 in Orbost selling furnishings, general ironmongery, furniture and tinsmith items. This partnership did not last long as on 6/9/1902 the shop then operated as Carl Drevermann & Co. later to become the Orbost Hardware & Timber Co. Mr Reynolds relocated the tinsmith part of the business to a new address. Mr Drevermann was a keen motorist and promoter of East Gippsland during the time when motor tourism was in its infancy. The Lady Nelson was the first decked ship to enter Western Port at the beginning of 1801, captained by Lt James Grant, who named Churchill Island after a man in Dawlish, Devon who gave him a quantity of a variety of seeds, including wheat, which he sowed on CI. Lady Nelson returned at the end of the year under the command of Murray, who reported that most of the seeds had grown. He harvested the wheat to feed to the swans they had on board for fresh meat. The house was variously known as ‘Mintaro’, ‘Montiere’ and ‘Goonoo Goonoo’, the later after 1920 when it was purchased by Natale Cerini and his wife Ethel May (nee Swan), who were married in 1918. Built 1887-1888 by William Wigley. The original colour was deep cream with dark green trim. Property included a block of land on south side and also land to the north. The original coach house was on what became 213 Union Road and was used to build a yacht in by the then neighbours, the Flemings. The street plane trees were replaced in the 1970s with melaleucas and in 1987 new plane trees were planted between the melaleucas. Diana Lodge was built and operated by Kevin Shoebridge as a family lodge in the 1950s and it has grown and evolved over 60 years to become Diana Alpine Lodge. After Mr. Shoebridge moved to Wodonga he leased Diana Lodge to Bob Scott and it also became the Post Office and Telephone Exchange. From early early 1967 until about 1975, Diana Lodge was owned and operated by John and Gwyn van Burck. It was then purchased by a group of 12 families operating as Swan Hill Alpine Holdings. The publisher firm, Longmans, Green & Co, was originally founded in 1724 in London by Thomas Longman under the name Longman. In August of that year, he bought the two shops and goods of William Taylor and set up his publishing house there at 39 Paternoster Row. The shops were called Black Swan and Ship, and it is said that the 'ship' sign was the inspiration for Longman's Logo. After many changes of name and management, the firm was incorporated in 1926 as Longmans, Green & Co. Pty Ltd. Copied from a copy of an original photo loaned to me by Mrs. Jean Grimson. The photo shows patrons arriving at a race meeting being held at the racecourse fronting the Loddon Valley Highway opposite where Mrs. Grimson was living in 1985. The photo was thought to be taken around 1920? The Swan Hill train used to slow down for race patrons to jump off and enter the course from the "rear". The course was later transferred to land fronting the Myers Flat - Marong Road & Williams Road and with a railway siding on the Bendigo side of the railway crossing Myers flat (behind the Allies Hotel). Photos of a procession of widows and legatees to the Shrine in 1992. These photos were in a scrapbook of photos from 1992. The pilgrimage was led down St. Kilda Road by the Hawthorn City Pipe Band (it may have started at St Paul Cathedral as there is a church service prior to the pilgrimage). A junior legatee is the flag bearer of the yellow Legacy flag. Sir Weary Dunlop can be seen in the march. President Swan and the President of the Widows' Club, Inez Bruce, are seen carrying wreaths to be laid. This is an annual event for Legacy widows, sometimes referred to as Widows' Sunday. It is usually at the start of Legacy Week, which is usually the first week in September. The Album was compiled by Nancy McHaffie late 1990's, with the assistance of Edith Jeffery's, with her book "Garden of Memories" and extensive knowledge of Phillip Island. The Cemetery lies back from the road and is surrounded by Manna Gums, rare Peppermint Gums, Blackwoods and other native trees. In all 25 acres of land were set aside as Crown Land in the land settlement of 1868. There are 6.2 acres of wetlands near the cemetery entrance.466-44: Captain Johan Jansson. Capatain Jansson was born in 1862 and came to Australia on the ship "Nosstaljee" in 1886. In 1887 he came to the Island and started work with Captain Lock. He bought land at Rhyll in 1891 and built a house two years later, now known as Jansson's Cottage. Johan married Evelyn Power.. a daughter of Captain Powell. He purchased the ketch "Swan" and later :Stephen" in 1914. They took chicory, seaweed, hay and other farm produce to Melbourne, returning with general cargo. Captain Jansson died in 1928 aged 66 years. 466-45: Evelyn Jansson. Evelyn was the daughter of Captain Powell. She married Johan Jansson on her 18th birthday. She died 1971 aged 95 years. David Andrew was born in Castlemaine in 1866 and moved with his family to Bendigo in 1871. He took over his fathers auctioneering business which was situated on the corner of Hargreaves and Williamson Streets in 1893. David Andrew married Myra Swan McIntyre in 1888 and they had two children. After the death of Myra in 1892 aged 27 he married Myra's younger sister Clare and together they had a further two children. David Andrew was a prominent member of the old Bendigo Caledonian Society, Captain of the Bendigo Fire Brigade, a member of the Bendigo Masonic Lodge and for many years Secretary of the Easter Fair. He served as a Councillor from 1904 - 1925 and Mayor 1909 - 10 and 1913 - 14.Event program for the Mayor's Ball. Gold and purple print on white and cream card. Edgar Gordon Morris was a prominent sportsman in Bacchus Marsh from around 1909 to 1918. He was regarded as the best all-round cricketer in the district and was also Secretary of the Bacchus Marsh Cricket Association. He was also a playing member of local football and tennis clubs. From about 1919 to 1921 Morris had been living in Swan Hill. His death at the age of 35 was reported in the Bacchus Marsh Express on the 5th March 1921 and was received with great sadness in sporting circles in Bacchus Marsh and district. To perpetuate his memory a shield to be presented to the premiership team each season in the Bacchus Marsh Cricket Association. The E.G. MOrris Shield was first presented for the 1921-1922 season.This item is of historical significance because it is associated with a particular person, Edgar Morris, a prominent sportsman and sports administrator in the Bacchus Marsh area. It is of comparative significance because it is representative of a shield design for a perpetual sporting trophy. The Shield also provides some research value by preserving and commemorating the memory of a prominent individual sports person in the Bacchus Marsh area.A silver plated shield created to perpetuate the memory of E. G. Morris. Enclosed inside a timber frame and sealed with a glass top. The shield is ringed by smaller shields with inscriptions identifying the premiership winning teams in the Bacchus Marsh Cricket Association between 1921 and 1930.The E. G. A regular event for the widows was a Christmas concert at the Melbourne Town Hall. Often the performers were the RAAF Central Band. Held in December each year. The photos show President Swan with Inez Bruce and Vera Lang. Usually the concert was the time the Widows Clubs presented Legacy with funds raised through their fundraising each year - in this case $11,900. The RAAF Central Band was conducted by Sq. Ldr. Graham Lloyd, and trombone soloist Sergeant Mike Hawkins and Ivor Jones (ex POW from Changi) also performed. A regular event for the widows was a Christmas concert at the Melbourne Town Hall. This detailed example of a match holding Vesta was owned by someone with the initials GBW but is otherwise difficult to identify ownership. Vestas are the historical name for what are now known as matches. They were named for the Roman goddess Vesta whose domain was the hearth and home. The Swan company began production of short matches, mostly useful for lighting pipes and cigarettes due to their deliberately short length. Due to their small size it became convenient to carry these Vestas within a Vesta Case kept somewhere on the person, large enough to contain enough matches for a days use. The cases prevented their contents from becoming damaged and damp while also stopping them from accidentally striking if held loose in a pocket. This example of a Vesta case is particularly ornate.The social history objects held in the Burke Museum's collection help to tell the stories of Beechworth's past by showing the social, cultural, and economic aspects of the town's history.A decorative silver coloured vesta or match book. Mr Carl Otto (Clyde) Drevermann was born at Lucknow and worked in various parts of Victoria before coming to Orbost in about 1902. In July 1902 he entered into partnership with Mr Edward Fisher Reynolds and the ironmongery, hardware and tinsmithing business was carried on by the new firm as Drevermann and Reynolds. In about 1905 Mr Drevermann assumed proprietorship and the tinsmith and plumbing section of the business was sold off to Mr Edward Swan. The ironmongery, hardware and timber business was known as Carl Dreverman & Co until 1917 when it was changed to Orbost Hardware and Timber Co. This shop had a row of nails on the window sill to prevent people sitting on the ledge. He married Carrie Bird and had children: Molly and Bill. Carl died in 1946.This is a pictorial record of a general store in early Orbost. It carried general merchandise, a variety of goods and staples needed by the surrounding community. The rural general store played a vital in regional communities throughout the 19th century and into the 20th century.. CABINET 1866-1905 The Cabinet photo was introduced in 1866 in answer to a demand for a larger format photograph which could be mounted for a cabinet or on the wall. They were 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches (11.5 x 16.5 cm), more than twice the size of the cdv. They cost about twice as much as a cdv but eventually displaced them. They were not extensively produced until 1880 and had ceased by 1905.
