This book belonged to Rolf Crawley who was an engineer in the employ of the Shire of Warrnambool at the time he acquired this book. In 1926 he was the engineer/secretary for the Minhamite Shire, returning in 1935 to the Shire of Warrnambool as the engineer after the death of his father, John William Crawley Junior. Rolf retained this position until 1968. Rolf’s grandfather, father and uncle had all been engineers or shire secretary for the Shire of Warrnambool, with the Crawley family recording a total of 132 years of service to the Shire of Warrnambool which existed from 1863 to 1994. This book is retained as a memento of Rolf Crawley, the engineer with the Shire of Warrnambool from 1935 to 1968. This is a hard cover book of 626 pages. The cover is green with gold lettering on the spine. The edges of the cover are rubbed. The book contains a preface, 18 chapters of text and an appendix. The pages contain many diagrams and plans. The inscriptions on the first page are handwritten in black ink. There is a label from the bookseller attached to the first page. Rolf L. This ledger’s first owner was Rolf Crawley, an architect and the official engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1935 to 1968. His grandfather, father and uncle also worked for the Shire of Warrnambool, with the family members recording a total of 132 years of service to the Shire. Stan Baulch later acquired the ledger, tore out the pages that had been used and recorded some aspects of his life from 1916 to 1923. Stanley Baulch (1897-1980) was the grandson of pioneer Kirkstall settlers, Francis and Ann Baulch and the son of Samuel and Eliza Baulch. In 1893 Samuel Baulch acquired the historic property of Dunmore, between Macarthur and Hawkesdale and in 1910 he purchased the property of Cowabee in the Riverina district in N.S.W. Stan Baulch managed Cowabee for some years before inheriting part of Dunmore which he named Rose Park. Cowabee was sold in 1922. Although only a few pages in length, this diary contains much interesting information on the early years of Stan Baulch at the homesteads of Cowabee and Dunmore. It will be useful for research purposes.This is a hard cover ledger with a dark grey cover and dark red binding. It contains pages printed with the name and address of the Shire of Warrnambool Engineer, Rolf Crawley. These pages contain two sections to a page ruled with blue lines to be used for short letters or invoices (originally 500 sections). The ledger also has blank pink pages used for duplicate copies. The first 42 sections have been torn out. William Henry Maw was a British civil engineer and astronomer. He was born in 1838 and died in 1924 at eighty-five years. Maw worked as an assistant at the workshops of the Eastern Counties Railway before he became a draughtsman in the design office. He designed the first outside cylinder locomotive for use in India. In 1865 he founded the journal Engineering and continued to be an editor for the rest of his life. Maw became a consulting engineer. He was president of the Civil and Mechanical Engineers' Society, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Institution of Civil Engineers.
