Photograph - Photograph, Black and white, Peckham Photographic Studios, Geo Beachcroft, Hanging on up aloft [the] C.B. Pedersen, c. 1935
Snapshot in time of tall ship and the relaxed clambering about the rigging by sailors. The C.B. Pedersen is also referred to as a Training Ship for Swedish seamen and cadets. A reference in Annual reports and in Jottings from our log notes that classes in Swedish amongst other languages were offered by the LHLG to members and some of the earliest photographs note Swedish sailors relaxing. The first officer and captain of the C.B. Pedersen are depicted in photograph (0706) on permanent display. In the Sydney Morning Herald, Tuesday 27 April 1937, page 12: "The C. B. Pedersen was built in 1891. It has visited Australia several times, the most recent occasion having been in 1935, when It was anchored in Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, for several weeks, awaiting a suitable cargo. At length the master, (Captain Hjalmar Dahlström) announced that, as no cargo could be obtained he would be prepared to carry passengers in a voyage to Gothenburg, via Torres Strait. Eight persons, including three women and a small boy were accepted as passengers, and signed on as members of the crew at salaries of 1/ a month". Artist Violet Teague was one of the passengers. She painted during the voyage and exhibited her work in 1938. Built in 1891 the C.B Pedersen, a four-masted steel barque (2142 tons) was used as a training Barque. The ship foundered in April 1937, the crew was saved. Several other photographs of the C.B. Pedersen taken by the same studio are held at the State Library of Victoria.Training of seamen has always been of of keen interest to the Mission to Seamen and many cadets have been welcomed over the 20th Century when widespread training was undertaken by a number of seafaring nations. Black and white photograph of 9 men hanging from ropes in the rigging. One man is upside down, another is holding his hat out. The mast is off to the right-hand side of the photograph and there are several ropes and chains. On the back of the photograph in the top left-hand corner is an ink stamp with the text "Peckham Photographic Studios/Geo Beachcroft/Propr./21 Charlotte St./Richmond/Victoria, Australia". Mission to Seafarers Victoria
Photograph - Framed montage, Arthouse - Picture Framing & Gallery, Noli Me Tangere, 2013
A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE Before the increase of air transport, everything that arrived or departed from Australia did so via the ports and wharves. The Mission to Seafarersis not a Victorian initiative, but rather a global network that currently operates in over 260 ports worldwide, assisting over 1.3 million seafaring men and women each year. The importance of the Mission’s role is demonstrated in the Chaplain’s Report 1947, which notes that ships and their crews are: “...inextricably linked with the well-being of Australian industrial and economic life... This, in turn, means that you cannot escape some share in responsibility for their welfare.” This window, titled ‘Noli Me Tangere’, was installed in memoriam of Moira Oliver, the wife of the Reverend Frank Oliver, chaplain at the Mission 1930-60, and whose dedication in life and service to the welfare of seafarers was inspirational to many.Reflections of the Sea was an exhibition of 10 framed montage of photographs from the mission's archive collection showcasing 10 stained glass windows from the St Peter chapel. This exhibition curated by Georgia Melville and Catherine McLay, and funded by PROV and Creative Victoria, was displayed in the World Trade Centre Wharf Gallery in June July 2013 and toured to Queenscliff Maritime Museum. The photographs of the windows were taken by scientific photographer Justine M. Philip. This frame is showcasing the memorial window to Moira Bird Oliver, wife of Padre Oliver , a photograph of Padre Oliver listing a ship and a photograph of sailors playing tug-of-war during a picnic.Framed and mounted on black cardboard of black and white and colour reproductions from the MTSV collection for the exhibition Reflections of the Sea with brief label signageon label: ABOVE: Mission to Seafarers' chaplain Frank L Oliver, visiting a ship whilst in port, c1950s BELOW: The crew of the motor ship Nyhaugin a tug-of-war with the crew of the SS Madgeburg at the 1926 Boxing Day picnicreflections of the sea, georgia melville, exhibition, 2013, world trade centre, wtc, creative victoria, prov, mission to seafarers, stained glass windows, justine m. philip, moira bird oliver, moira bird oliver (nee good), padre frank leslie oliver, picnic, tug-of-war, flinders street, catherine mclay, arthouse -

Seaman's Hat, H.M.A.S Warrnambool, Early 21st century
In 2005 the H.M.A.S. Warrnambool was de-commissioned in Darwin and the Mayor of Warrnambool, Cr Glenys Phillpot, was present at the ceremonies connected to this event. She obtained this sailor’s hat at that time as a souvenir of the ship. It appears to be brand new. H.M.A.S. Warrnambool was the second ship with this name. The first H.M.A.S. Warrnambool was built in Sydney in 1941 and commissioned for anti-submarine and mine sweeping duties. In 1947 it was struck by a mine in northern Australian waters and sunk with the loss of four lives. The second H.M.A.S. Warrnambool was commissioned in 1981as a patrol boat in northern Australian waters. It had steamed over 500,000 miles before the end of its working life in 2005 and had visited Warrnambool several times. This sailor’s cap is of importance as a memento of the second ship named H.M.A.S. Warrnambool and particularly commemorates the de-commissioning of that ship in 2005 in Darwin. This is a white seaman’s hat with a flat oval-shaped crown made of stiffened white material with two white metal eyelets on each side. The base has a black ribbon with a black bow and lettering in woven gold thread. Inside there is a leather band with a white bow and a navy blue ribbon to act as a chin strap. This is attached on one side only. Inside also is a white label with the maker’s information on it. H.M.A.S. Equipment - Rigging
The shrouds or fore-rigging are a part of the standing rigging on a sailing ship. They are used in pairs on each side of a ship to help hold the masts in place and to aid the sailors who climb the rigging. They are part of the basic framework for the sails. Larger vessels may have two or three pairs, and some ships may have upper and lower shrouds. The upper shrouds would be fixed to a protruding structure on the top of the masts so that they hung from the right angle. The ropework skills of the sailmaker would be used to create the shrouds, choosing fibres with properties suitable for the job at hand and creating the triangular shape carefully. Deadeyes and ropes were then used to attach the shrouds to the ship's structure. This shroud is an example of a part of the standing rigging of a sailing ship. Photograph - Reproduction, Queenscliff fishing boats welcome the American Fleet
On Saturday 29 August 1908, over 100 years ago, 16 American battleships along with 5 various escorts entered Port Phillips Bay. Thousands flocked with excitement along the coast and to Port Melbourne to see the white painted ships and their sailors disembarked. The Fleet’s Mission, ordered by President Theodore Roosevelt, was to make friendly courtesy visits to countries while obviously displaying new U.S. naval power. Invited by Alfred Deakin to the young federation, who was feeling isolated and vulnerable after the Anglo-Japanese Alliance, the visit was a first step in the shaping of the relationship between the US and Australia. And also an impetus to create the Australian Navy in 1911.A photograph of an original photograph depicting the Queenscliff fishing fleet out welcoming the incoming American fleet on Saturday 29 August 1908.Queenscliff fishing boats welcoming the American Fleetthe americcan fleet, the great white fleet, theodore roosevelt, alfred duncan, australian navy 1911 -

Craft - Ship Model, Joseph Conrad, 20th centuryca
The ship model of the Joseph Conrad represents the craft of ship model making, which has been enjoyed by many people over the years. Although the model is made from modern materials, it shows the elements of a sailing ship of a bygone era. Ship Model of the JOSEPH CONRAD: - The Joseph Conrad began as the iron-hulled sailing ship Georg Stage, launched in 1882. It was used in Denmark as a training ship for sailors. In 1905 while docked at Copenhagen the ship was rammed by a larger ship and 22 boys were killed while sleeping in the hull. The ship was later raised and on guard during World War I. Alan Villiers, an Australian author and sailor, rescued the ship and renamed it Joseph Conrad in honour of the renowned maritime author. In 1934 the ship visited Sydney on its worldwide tour, then in 1936 it was sold to an American, who later donated it for use again as a training ship. After World War II the ship was in disuse until 1947 when it was transferred to the Mystic Seaport for use as an exhibit. The author, Joseph Conrad (1857-1927): - Joseph Conrad was Polish-born and became a British subject in 1886. He was a renowned marine fiction writer and also, for a short time, a mariner and Captain. As a boy of 13 years old, Joseph Conrad’s desire was to be a sailor. At 19, he joined the British merchant marine, working in several roles. He eventually qualified as a captain but only served in this role once, from 1888-89, when he commanded the barque Otago sailing from Sydney to Mauritius. In 1889 he also began writing his first novel, Almayer’s Folly. He retired from life as a mariner in 1894, aged 36. Conrad’s visits to Australia from 1878 to 1982, and his affection for Australia, were later commemorated by a plaque in Circular Quay, Sydney. Conrad continued as an author. It is said that many of the characters in his books were inspired by his maritime experiences and the people he had met. By the end of his life, he had completed many stories and essays, and 19 novels, plus one incomplete novel titled ‘Suspense’ that was finished and published posthumously. Shortly before he passed away, in 1924, Conrad was offered a Knighthood by Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald for his work but declined. The ship model represents the design of sailing ships built in the 1880s and can be used as a reference in understanding the construction of the ships of the Victorian era. The model's name is significant for its association of its name with the famed early 20th-century maritime author, Joseph Conrad.Ship model; A three-masted sailing ship named the Joseph Conrad, with cabins on deck, lifeboats, a ladder on the side and a figurehead on the bow. Stephen D.D. along with the brass tablet in the Williamstown building, and a sectile tablet in the Port Melbourne building. (AR 1933). "A scheme has been set in operation to raise funds so that a memorial may be erected to Miss A. Sibthorpe Tracy, who has done so much for the Victoria Missions to Seamen. It has been decided that a companion window to that of "The Light of the World" will be placed in St. Peter's Chapel, the design being that of a figure of Hope with her hand on a ship's anchor. The window will show a foreground of beach and pebbles, backed by breaking rollers and a flecked sky. Mrs J. W. Begg, of Stonehaven Avenue, East Malvern, S.E.5, is the honorary treasurer of the fund."
