You say you will come home after the last shead. I should think so. I had a letter from E Jenkins so I am going down to see her next week we call the baby Fernie now I hope you will agree. Dear Fern has got the whooping cough. Written on the side: I suppose you will be away four weeks yet. Love from Mattie will write on Sunday. I do hope dear he will get over this all right you must be nearly dead going without sleep for so long I had a bit of misfortune myself on Thursday the machine locked and jumped out of my hand and stuck in my bone I kept on working but it was very painful as all the holding is done with the..next page ..knee the boss also has been chipping a good deal this week he says the next time he has occasion to speak to me I will have to go he is very particular. I would like to go through if possible even if I do a lot less. I have not ventured to take part in it and don’t think I will either. I get enough dancing all day long and besides I have to furnish the music you ought to see them going when I rattle up the concertina. There is a brass plaque that states: THIS PLAQUE IS IN MEMORY OF DORA CHAPMAN daughter of William and Estelle Chapman CALLED HOME WHILE PLAYING THE ORGAN ON THE OCCASION OF THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SILVAN CHURCH. SEPTEMBER, 27TH 1936 DORA WAS A SISTER TO MR ERNEST CHAPMAN On another plaque it states: THIS ORGAN WAS A WEDDING PRESENT TO ERN AND BERYL CHAPMAN AND WAS DONATED TO MONT DE LANCEY IN THE YEAR 1994 BY MAVIS, BOB, LES AND ALBERT CHAPMAN The organ was a present from Mr Ernest Chapman and his bride on the occasion of their wedding on October 26th 1927. The organ was made in Meriden Connecticut USA by Wilcox and White in 1885. A date inside the organ indicates that it was last tuned June 16th 1900. A highly decorated, delicate ornate carved wooden pump organ with a round mirror set back into the front panel. It has a sheet music rest or shelf with an opening lid to store sheet music inside the cupboard. There are two side shelves with five knobs on each at the front. It has a keyboard with thirteen stops below. Next to the key stops above the keyboard is gold lettering with 'Wilcox & White Meriden. Connecticut. USA.There are two brass patterned pump foot pedals below: the left one has 'WILCOX' stamped on it, the right pedal has '& WHITE' stamped on it and the metal is damaged from use. There are two carved levers underneath the keyboard: the left one has a sticker saying "Grand Organ", the right one's sticker says, "Knee Swell". There is no stool.The brass covered left foot pump pedal has 'WHITE' stamped on it, the right pedal has '......' stamped on it. Inside the silver box is a lock of hair with a handwritten note - Grandfather's hair Sept 9th 1899. A small rectangular ornately engraved and decorated lidded box with a linear pattern overall on the outside of the lid, sides and bottom. It has a scalloped shape on all edges. Inside is a lock of Grandfather's hair wrapped in a folded piece of paper with writing describing who it is from and the date. Inside on the lid bottom of the box are engravings of the maker. Inscribed on the outside of the lid in an ornate rectangular scalloped shape: Presented to Mr. George Birrell MECHANIC By his Fellow Workmen as a token of respect on his leaving for Australia 11th July 1851 GLASGOW Inside the lid top are three stamps: one is a face in a circle, next to it a rectangle with ES and the third is not recognisable. A Legacy ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance. One of the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" events, usually held just prior to ANZAC Day. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. The photos shows a crowd of school children facing the forecourt of the Shrine with many assembled on the steps. It appears there was a flagpole erected in the forecourt. The photos were in an envelope from The Argus and The Australian newspaper, addressed to Legatee Gillespie. Items were in an envelope with other photos and programmes from different School Student ceremonies. Mr Maurice Ashkanasy, President of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry is addressing the gathering. Melbourne Legacy ran three residences: Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950), to take care of children whose fathers were deceased servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself. It appears to be photo taken professionally, as there are several photos of different classes (see 00862 - 00867), a note of thanks was included in the Newsletter to Mr John Beckett of 22 Kirkwood Ave Sandringham for taking the photos and donating them to Legacy. There are 29 boys, of various ages, in gymnastic gear with the Legacy logo on the chest and 4 men who could be the instructor and a Legacy member. Legacy clubs ran classes for junior legatees for many years, such as gymnastics and swimming classes. It was part of providing for the children of their deceased comrades. The skills they learned were show cased in an annual demonstration usually at the Melbourne Town Hall. This envelope was used to post a letter or other similar document from Bacchus Marsh in Victoria around November 1861 to a Mr James Henderson in Coldstream, Northumberland, England. The contents inside the envelope have been lost and the sender of the envelope is not known. Postal services in Bacchus Marsh can be traced back to at least 1847 when Henry James of Bacchus Marsh was appointed postmaster for Bacchus Marsh replacing the service previously conducted from Ballan. Henry James conducted this postal service from his residence. This service was still designated as the Ballan Post Office until September 1850 when its name was formally changed to the Bacchus Marsh Post Office. The envelope of 1861 addressed to Mr Henderson in England is therefore a fairly early documentary artifact from users of the Bacchus Marsh postal service. An envelope used for a letter in 1861. An address in Norththumberland, England is written on the front of the envelope. It also shows a postage stamp depicting Queen Victoria of Great Britain. The postage stamp is a sixpence stamp produced in the colony of Victoria in the 1850s and 1860s. 'Messrs. George Phillips and Richard Williams erected a water wheel crushing machine near the site of the Old Albert shaft at Diamond Hill'. ( Bendigo Advertiser 4th June, 1890). The lack of water available for the venture from the water race caused much controversy in the following years. There was only enough water available in July 1890, to allow the company to operate three head of a ten head stamper. The site of the water wheel is still visible on the side of the water race at Diamond Hill. Mr. Geo Phillips held 1000 shares in the float of the Kangaroo Hydraulic Crushing & Gold Mining Company. Allan Llewellyn was a well known Eaglehawk identity. See Allan Llewellyn Collection Cat. No.8389. Eleven typed pages of extracts from the 'Bendigo Advertiser' and one private letter to J.H. Seymour, contained in a manilla envelope with Mr. A. Llewellyn, 102 Victoria Street, Eaglehawk, Victoria 3556' written on front in red ink. In pencil above address: 'Please return to A. Seymour, 25yth October, 1876, discussing the prize given to an exhibitor at the National Show, rather than the Seymour model exhibited by the writer. The writer is only a 'working miner and .. could not afford to make a full size cage'. 2. Letter from 'Fair play' 1st December 1876 regarding Seymour's model and that he should be given the opportunity to have his full size cage tested by the Judges. The cage was working at the Londonderry's Tribute Co. 3. Letter from 'unknown' regarding Nancarrow's Safety Cage, discussing Seymour's claiming 'the levers as his patent'. 4. Two letters from J.H. Seymour, regarding the unfair nature of the testing of the safety cages. Letters dated 1876. 5. Three letters from James Watson, blacksmith, Sandhurst, regarding the construction of the mining cage model exhibited by James Seymour. 6. Two letters - one from H. Gold and Redgum Inkstand made by Ernest Leviny, c1855-1858. Presented to Mr J.V.A. Bruce, contractor for the Melbourne and Murray Railway by the workmen, at Woodend on Monday 8th July 1861. This gold inkstand was Leviny's first major masterpiece commenced around 1855 and made from gold found on the Victorian fields. It featured four gold nuggets representing the Southern Cross from the goldfields of Ballarat, Bendigo Maryborough and Castlemaine. It was exhibited in Melbourne in 1858, and again in 1861 where it was awarded a 1st Class Certificate at the Victorian Exhibition in Melbourne. In 1862 it was exhibited at the London International Exhibition where it attracted a great deal of attention and was published in The Art Journal Illustrated Catalogue accompanying the exhibition. This is a typewritten account of the history of Port Fairy from 1810 to 1890. It was written by William Earle (1850 -1902). In an addenda at the back of this folder there is a note from William Earle which indicates that the booklet was written in 1896 ‘as a result of a prize offered by several residents in a Schedule issued in connection with a local Industrial Exhibition, which Prize it secured’. Does this refer to the 1896-7 Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition? No evidence of this has yet been found. As this folder was given to the ShipLovers Society of Victoria Library in 1963, some ten years before Earle’s history was reprinted in 1973, it is an early copy of Earle’s original work and may have been produced in the late 19th century or early 20th century. The original material was first published by the Port Fairy Gazette in 1896.This folder is of great interest as it is an early copy of Earle’s History of Port Fairy, an important historical publication. This is a black cardboard folder containing 120 typewritten foolscap pages about the history of Port Fairy 1810-1890 (written by William Earle). Inside the front cover there is a stamp of the ShipLovers Society of Victoria Library. The front cover has a sheet of white paper stuck on with adhesive tape. It has a black and white sketch of an anchor, a sailing ship and a rope. The pages are attached to the folder with four metal studs. Wilhelm Martin Koska (1873-1937) was born in Germany and came to Australia in 1898. William Lunn (1833-1916) was born i England where he learned cabinetmaking. He came to Australia in 1855 and initially partook in mining and puddling. He then became a salesman for Mr Henry King, painter and decorator. When King died in 1868, Lunn bought the business. In 1906 Lunn married the widow, Ann Jane Newman (nee Pinnell) . Ann and her first husband were neighbours of William Lunn who lived in "Esperence", Wills Street.
