After WW1 my grandfather George Arthur Scattergood, along with his brother Charles Scattergood worked for the Tramways. George was a grippy and Charley was a conductor (I think). They were all part of the Tramways band and I found this photo recently among my fathers papers. George Scattergood played the bass drum and is sitting in the centre front beside his drum. He had just returned from 4 years at the front surviving Gallipoli and then sent to the Western front in Possier etc. He often said that being in the infantry band saved his sanity and that on his return joining the Tramways Band gave his life new meaning. He also played in the Malvern City band. 4 years in the trenches without a break must have been shocking so thank you to the Tramways Band. Newspaper Clipping - set of nine sheets of newspaper clippings adhered to both sides of a sheet of ruled quarto paper with punched holes on the left hand side - various newspapers, mainly to do with Tom Pesteranovich and his black listing following working during a strike, industrial courts, use of University students, Conductor John Brooker also black banned, stop work meetings, . Also covers new train fares, St Kilda Junction works, derailments on the rail system, fire damage to rail bridges and a note inviting people to join Puffing Billy. Set of three brass cast, chrome plated, machined, device or ticket punches used to cancel or punch paper tickets when purchased. Placed a shaped hole in the ticket. Spring loaded, consists of two main parts with a pin & spring from coiled wire. Some of the chrome plating has been worn off. There are no manufacturer markings on the punches. Passengers could often transfer from one service to another - eg changing from a tram to a bus, without having to pay a second fare. A transfer ticket would be issued on request and this along with the original fare ticket would be shown to the conductor or bus driver at the time of transfer. Check tickets would be issued by a conductor to record that the person had shown a periodical eg scholars ticket. This enabled passenger counting as well. Certificates of service were provided to MMTB employees when they left the job. Gives the name of the person and their dates of work. This Certificate has been issued to Kevin F Tierney, who worked initially as a University Student conductor during the summer holidays, then as a conductor or a driver during two following years. His traffic number was 6337.Demonstrates the use of a form to provide a person's employment record. Set of four driver / conductor traffic numeral badges or personnel employee numbers and one brass MMTB button. .1 - Badge number, MMTB style, "1453", plated brass to give a gold finish with the numbers fixed to a bar top and bottom and two lugs on the rear to clip into a cap. Made by Stokes and Sons Melbourne - has been stamped onto the rear. .2 - ditto - engraved into a layered plastic backing - black plastic with a white underlay, used by tram crews to indicate their assigned personal employee number. Later MMTB prior to The Met type. See Reg Item 1368 for other examples. .3 - ditto - The Met - Three parts - holder made from gold coloured plastic with a metal Met (the flying one) logo fixed above the holder and fitted with a pin.
