Functional object - Run Number Plate, Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB), Malvern M57, c1960s
Pressed metal plate with corners trimmed, top section partly folded with two slotted holes, sides folded to give strengthening to the plate, painted with a yellow background and the letter "M" and numbers "57" painted in black, to give a Run Number Plate for Malvern Depot No. 57. Painted with the same detail on either side of the plate. Used by Malvern Depot until they were phased out and replaced with the Automatic Vehicle Monitoring system c1990. Yields information about the correspondence between the SEC staff about the opening of tram tracks for underground services.Original of a report, handwritten in pencil from a copy book (pages 26 and 27), dated 23/3/1937, addressed to the Manager, from Mr. Mawby titled "Opening up of tram tracks by Plumber etc" reporting on a Mr. McLean excavating under track in Drummond St on 23/3 for a Ballarat Water Board pipe and the issues that arose. No notification to the SEC, underground services, and the absence of advice from traffic crews. Gambling at Tram Depots was common and resulted in the loss of wages. See attached document with notes by Peter Bruce. The MMTB tried to restrict it, but it still took place. The first copy printed on a light blue card provides departure times and some intermediate timings for the Toorak Cable Tramway operated by the Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Co. from both the Toorak Rd terminus and Queensberry St terminus in Swanston St. Shows the frequency of the service, provides details of fares and transfer points. Signed by H A Wilcox Secretary and dated Nov. 1911. See item 7357 for the crew running timetable. Used by the MMTB to indicate to conductors and inspectors, the tramcar number. Placed on the driver's bulkhead, facing into the tram with one at either end of the tram. The tram body was built by James Moore of South Melbourne entering service in 9/1924. Functional object - Run Number Plate - Preston P89, Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB), 1980s
East Preston Run number plate 'P89' used for the vehicle identification system used in the AVM. Item was pushed into a slot of a reader which then recognised the identification through the series of holes on the left hand side. Fitted with metal strips, riveted on, to enable the card to be slotted into the holder by the crew member and then withdrawn when not required. Understood that the tram carried one of these at one end and then another without the holes at the other end. Run number plates used for the vehicle identification system used in the AVM. Photograph shows W class 307 standing on slightly curved track displaying destination "Victoria Bridge" and no route number box attached. The uniformed motorman and conductor stand on the roadway next to the front driver's cab where the trolley pole has been tied down. The conductor wears his coin bag and the driver is holding the tram's key and air brake handle. An elderly male passenger with coat stands at the drop-centre doorway and other passengers are inside. The car body of W 307 was built by Holden Motor Body Builders in South Australia in 1924 as part of a large contract to build W class trams. Victoria Bridge was the termini of both the Collins Street and Victoria Parade cable tram that closed in 1929 and the Mont Albert electric tram from Union Road, via Whitehorse Road and Kew Junction. Perhaps this photograph is of the Mont Albert terminus although the curved track suggests otherwise.Yields information about early W class tramcars .
