Miss Ravesi Mosi. of Fiii. and diminutive Miss Katalini Dimula, of Papua, the first native women missionaries to visit Australia From these islands. Ravesi and Katalini have enjoyed vastly the three months they have already spent in this country. Thev came here at the' invitation of the Methodist Women's Auxiliary for Oversea Missions in Victoria to take part in their diamond jubilee celebrations in Melbourne. They also spent some time in Sydney. But they are particularly happy to be in Adelaide because both of them have found old and good friends here. That is why it feels! like 'home'. Katalini. whose home is on the Island of Misima, in the far south-west of Papua, is the guest of the Rev. H. K. Bartlett and Mrs Bartlett. who lived on Misima for several years and knew Katoitni as a young girl. They are the first people she has met in Australia who speak her language and know her background. Photocopy of a newspaper article titled Discover Bendigo by James Lerk titled The Mine Flooding Crisis - Finale of the Victoria Quartz. Soon after the flooding of the mine commenced in June 1910, tributers worked the upper levels. By 1913 the Company found it was uneconomic to allow tributers to continue working in the upper levels. Four Bendigo men, Ernest Smith, David Holden, Jack Harrison and David Patullo worked the mine during the Depression. They did well. To the north of these buildings and across a cobblestone lane now called Enterprise Way was the Salvation Army Citadel, .a further commercial building housing a printer. Erection of this building necessitated demolition of Barelli's stable and reclamation of its horseyard. Opening of Eltham Library by The Hon. R.J. Hamer, E.D., M.P. (right) and Cr. G.C. Dreverman. The Eltham Branch of the Heidelberg Regional Library Service was opened on 17 August 1971 by Victoria’s Chief Secretary R. J. Hamer. The library was designed by the firm Leith and Bartlett and was the southern wing of the Shire of Eltham Offices in Main Road Eltham. Visitors entered a “book plaza” which embodies the display techniques of a bookshop. Through this area was located a quieter area for reference and the more “purposeful” reader. The library was opened as part of the Shire of Eltham’s centenary celebrations. The library and Shire Offices were demolished exactly 25 years later in 1996. The current library was opened in 1994.This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). Rifle competitions were popular activities for men in the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century.
