In reprisal for the deaths of five aboriginals of the Taurigurung tribe, aboriginals killed James Neill, hutkeeper and Hugh Bryan, shepherd on 22/5/1832. These men worked on an outstation of Campaspe Plains sheep run owned by Capt. Charles Hutton. The outstation was at Wild Duck Creek. At the same time the aboriginals stole 700 sheep. Book - Charles Steedman, 1867, Manual of Swimming, 1867
Charles Steedman was headmaster of Williamstown Grammar School from 1870-76 and 1885-90. In 1870, under agreement with school trustees, Sir George Verdon and John Courtis, he leased the school under a seven-year lease, effectively saving it from closure. Steedman had previously been manager of Sandridge Baths and a champion swimmer of Victoria. His 1867 book, 'Manual of Swimming', was the first major technical contribution to the sport of speed swimming and water safety, for which Steedman was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2006. As headmaster of Williamstown Grammar, Steedman initiated a student produced school paper called 'The Schoolboy' (surviving editions can be accessed at the State Library of Victoria), added swimming lessons to the curriculum and opened enrolment to girls in 1885. The book contains nine illustration plates featuring line drawings of a human figure in the positions detailed by Steedman in his text. These drawings are attributed to O.R. Campbell. Oswald Rose Campbell is best known for his appointment (1876-1886) as drawing master of the School of Design, a department of the Public Library, Museums and National Gallery of Victoria. He taught (and famously disagreed with) the likes of celebrated Australian artists, Tom Roberts and Frederick McCubbin. O.R Campbell taught drawing and painting at Williamstown Grammar in the early 1870s.The book holds historic significance for Westbourne Grammar School, having been written by a former headmaster and very important figure in the history of the school. It evokes our early history as an emerging grammar school with links to prominent athletes, artists and gentry of colonial Melbourne. Blue cloth covered case-bound book, with debossed decorative scrollwork in each corner and in the centre of front cover, and gilt lettering on the spine. 270 numbered pages, nine illustration plates (one adjacent to title page, eight as end pages). On title page, handwritten inscriptions in brown coloured ink. Possibly ‘Joshua Saggs Esq. / With the authors compliments’ and below, in different handwriting and darker ink, ‘To dear Flossie from Grandma 1901’. williamstown, sandridge baths, swimming, colonial melbourne, art, williamstown grammar -

Lacock was on the main London to Bristol road until the road was re-routed through Chippenham. There are no obvious signs of the 21st century in this National Trust village, except the motor car. It has been run by the National Trust since 1944 and residents are on a lease. The oldest house in the village is King John's Hunting Lodge, parts of which date back to the 13th century. In this village there are buildings from every century since right up until the 18th century. The abbey was founded in 1229 by Ela, Countess of Salisbury. Documents, William Ardlie Archives, C 1900-1940
This collection of papers have come from the offices of William Ardlie a local solicitor. He was born in Moonee Ponds in 1843 and was admitted as an attorney and solicitor of the supreme Court in 1865. From 1867 to 1878 he was in partnership with George Barber and then continued to practise until his late eighties which made him the oldest practising lawyer in Australia. He was involved in local councils and organisations such as the Hospital and Anglican Church. He was associated with several large homes in Warrnambool including Wyton presently the home of Emmanual College Warrnambool. He died in 1933.His son E L Ardlie also practised as a solicitor from the same offices from 1893. A number of the invoices included relate to the Estate of James drought who was a local policeman and owner of a number of properties and operated in various trades such as George Ramsay manufacturer of stoves and chimneys, J Rogers plumber & gas fitter and Christian & Dodds who were carpenters and joiners. There are a number of documents which relate to the Chinese, many of whom operated market gardens along the Merri River. They were a familiar part of Warrnambool from around 1872 until around 1940. The names mentioned in these documents include Ah Foo,Charles Quing Bow, Andrew Quing Bow Ah Bing Ah Jing Ah Moon and Ah Seong. They were reknown for their supply of fresh vegetables to the people of the town. They leased land from John Moore. These documents are a cross section of the types of documents which were used and are still used in the operation of businesses. They provide a social snapshot of people and the business which they conducted with their solicitors in this case William and E L Ardlie who were a long standing legal firm in the district. Another interesting aspect of some of these documents is the leases signed by the Chinese market gardeners who played an important but often overlooked aspect of Warrnambool's aspect.A total of 27 documents which relate to William Ardlie Solicitors 001133.1Policy from The Victoria Insurance Company for office effects, 001133.1.2 Receipt for 11/1 for policy. 001133.2 Renewal Receipt from Messrs Hammond & Richards as agents for Victoria Insurance Co. 001133.3 Renewal Receipt from Messrs Hammond & Richards as agents for Victoria Insurance Co. 001133.4 General rates receipt . Bottle, James Barnes Chemist, Early 1920s
This bottle was used in the pharmacy of James Barnes in Minyip and Horsham and possibly also in Warrnambool as the bottle was found in this city. Born in England, James Barnes came to Australia in 1873. He was a chemist and veterinary surgeon in Creswick, Minyip and Horsham before coming to Warrnambool about 1926. He purchased the pharmacy of Dougall and Easton at 102 Liebig Street which had been leased to Leonard Eason in the early 1920s. Barnes called this business the Manuka Pharmacy. The chemist he brought in to manage the business, Len Suggett, eventually bought the business. Barnes died in 1939. His son Ralph also had a pharmacy business in Warrnambool in the 1920s. Although this bottle does not have the name ‘Warrnambool’ on it, it is likely that James Barnes used the bottle in his Warrnambool pharmacy. It is, therefore, of considerable interest as it is one of the few pieces of James Barnes’ mementoes found so far. James and Ralph Barnes were prominent chemists in Warrnambool in the 20th century. This is a glass bottle with a rectangular body with curved edges, a circular-shaped neck and a round moulded top. There is no stopper and the top has a small chip in the glass. The front of the bottle is embossed with the name of the chemist and the outline of a shield with the chemist’s initials. The bottle is empty and the inside of the bottle is discoloured from the original contents. ‘J.B.’ ‘James Barnes Chemist Minyip & Horsham’ On Base: ‘M’ chemists in warrnambool, history of warrnambool, james barnes,, warrnambool chemist -

Photograph - Digital Photograph, Marguerite Marshall, Strathewen Primary School, 20 August 2008
The school building originally owned by locals was lost in the Black Saturday 2009 bushfires. Land was purchased in 1914 to build he Strathewen State School on School Ridge Road, Strathewen. Residents and the Education Department contributed funds for the building which the Education Department then leased for a small annual fee. The school opened with one teacher in 1917 with no equipment. In 1921 the Education Department provided desks and a hexagonal shelter shed and took control in 1925. After this photo was taken, the school was destroyed in Black Saturday on 9 February 2009. Published: Nillumbik Now and Then / Marguerite Marshall 2008; photographs Alan King with Marguerite Marshall.; p89This collection of almost 130 photos about places and people within the Shire of Nillumbik, an urban and rural municipality in Melbourne's north, contributes to an understanding of the history of the Shire. Published in 2008 immediately prior to the Black Saturday bushfires of February 7, 2009, it documents sites that were impacted, and in some cases destroyed by the fires. It includes photographs taken especially for the publication, creating a unique time capsule representing the Shire in the early 21st century. It remains the most recent comprehenesive publication devoted to the Shire's history connecting local residents to the past. nillumbik now and then (marshall-king) collection, strathewen primary school -

Letter - Kelly and Allsop collection: Amalgamated Hill End
Situated 150 miles from Sydney and 50 miles from Bathurst, Hawkin's Hill mining leases had produced good returns in the 1860's and 70's. However, a lack of working capital meant that many of the mines operated by up to 17 different companies petered out. About 1886 efforts were made to consolidate these claims but insufficient funding could be found. With the renewal of an offer of a government subsidy and the sale of shares, has allowed the purchase of these old claims and their infrastructure. Exploration has shown that these old mines still contained payable amounts of gold. Thus the formation of the Amalgamated Hill End Company.Typewritten letter dated 2nd February 1911. The letter is from the Amalgamated Hill End Ltd signed by the secretary, addressed to M.P. Kelly Esq. stock and share broker, Bendigo. The letter advises of the upcoming float on the stock market of the Amalgamated Hill End Mines. The float is for 500,000 shares at four shilling each. Copies of the prospectus will be sent once available.A lot of sums in pencil on front and backamalgamated hill end mine, shares -

Photograph - Filling in the Outer Circle Railway cutting at East Kew, 1939
W.D. Vaughan (Kew's Civic Century, 1960, pp.195-6) quotes Council Minutes of 1938 and 1939 to record that: "After protracted negotiations between the Council, the Railways Department and the Tramways Board agreement was reached in June, 1938, for the filling of the railway cutting at the Harp Junction and shifting tram tracks to the High Street alignment ... The Outer Circle railway land from Princess Street to Park Crescent was purchased by the Kew Council in October, 1939, for 2,750 [pounds]. The land from Park Crescent to High Street was leased for 1 [pound] per annum. Considerable work was done in levelling the embankments to the original surface level."Important and rare photograph of the period, showing major works by Kew Council in Kew East working on a significant piece of urban infrastructure.Small, original black and white positive (photograph) showing workers and vehicles filling in the tracks of the former Outer Circle railway at East Kew. In the background is the metal bridge with brick piers, adjacent to the Harp Junction. The bridge crossed the cutting, linking the two parts of High Street. Behind the tip truck, painted on the side with the name 'Fowler Quarries' [located Keilor Road, North Essendon], one can see shops [including T.G. Garroway, Cash Grocer] in High Street. What appears to be the City of Kew Steamroller is immediately in front of the bridge. A group of passers-by watch from the bridge and from the road.
