The Charlton Gentlemen's Club was established in 1900 by solicitor Ben Green. The original building had a narrow entrance off High St, between Egan & Spains Grocery Shop and the Central Café. After fire damaged the buildings in the 1970s, the club was extended to its present size. The vacant block next door was formerly Clark's butcher's shop. Part of a series of streetscapes taken for the Charlton Shire in 1987.Colour photograph of a single storey, glass fronted building with a white-framed front door. Magnetic Dip Circle
Dip circle consists of a brass cylinder with two glass flat end-windows, containing a centrally mounted magnetic needle free to rotate about its supporting axis in a vertical plane. The needle , when at rest is arrested by a trunnion from which the needle can be raised by means of external knob. Very close to the needle is mounted the vertical circular scale. Two magnifiers are mounted at the end of a brass “diameter’ which can be rotated so as to read off the angular positions of both ends of the needle after being set up. Graduated horizontal scale on the base. Spirit level mounted. Tribach base.Engraved on base: “Robinson 38 Devonshire Street Portland Place London” -

Magnetron, 25cm, (disassembled cylinder & lid)
Copper cylinder to which radial copper vanes are brazed defining twelve resonant cavities. Central cylindrical cavity contains white oxide coated cathode sandwiched between two stainless steel disks, one at each end. Three electrodes pass through glass-copper seals, the copper tubes are attached radially to the outside of the cylinder. -

Functional object - Get a Gillies sign
Gillies Pies was started by three brothers from Charlton, in central Victoria, Les, Alan and Norm Gillies who left their farm after the 1940s drought and headed to Bendigo to start anew. From their first small bakery in Mitchell Street, the brothers eventually went on to employ about 200 people with wholesale and retail locations spreading across the state and distribution including Melbourne.A double-sided sign, both sides are identical.
