The first section of the Post Office was built in 1864. During 1865 the second section and tower were built. Building is of a Victorian Italianate design. Arched headed windows on the ground floor originally formed a colonnade. These were filled in to give additional space inside. The tower - a feature of the building. Top has a cast iron balustraded widow's walk. The Post Office building is now part of Federation University Ballarat Camp Street Campus - Arts Academy. The official opening of the Arts Academy, by Steve Bracks, Premier of Victoria, was on 11 October 2002.
