Archive - File, Safer Routes to Shops in Port Melbourne, 2000 - 2001
This project involved community representatives in the identification of unsafe points on the route between Wintringham Hostel and Bay Street, in particular for elderly and disabled people. The intention of the project was to improve coordination between departments of Council viz. Health & Safety with Infrastructure. The lack of coordination that was a legacy of contracting-out was evident throughout the project.File of documents, reports, correspondence, photos relating to the project "Safer Routes to Shops in Port Melbourne" (between Wintringham Hostel and Bay Street) 2000-2001engineering - roads streets lanes and footpaths, matt rodda, jim hillis, perce mcguire white, perce white -

Document, City of Port Phillip, Naming Proposal Port Melbourne, Mar 2002
Proposal for "Fussy"s Beach"in honour of Peter Fussell, formerly South Melbourne engineer, soundly rejected. 1. Although Peter was involved in designs for this area of foreshore as an engineer for COPP, he was unknown in Port 2. Not customary to name beaches after people 3. "Fussy" was only certain officer's nickname for Peter and was also seen to lack dignityPublic notice placed in Emerald Hill Times, March 2002, proposing "Sandridge Beach" be renamed "Fussy's Beach"in honour of former city engineer peter Fussell, who was ill.town planning - proposals shelved, garden city, peter fussel - city engineer -

Poster, John KIRBY, Bayside Barber Shop, June 2010
Dated 1886 on it's facade, the first listing in Sands & MacDougall Directories for O'Brien's Terrace does not occur until 1891. However, Mr A BROWN is noted as running his hairdressing business at this address from 1887. In 1896 Port Melbourne streets were renumbered and the address of his premises became 149 Bay Street. From that period it has been used as a hairdressing establishment by a number of people & companies. In 1901 the second in a series of hairdressers occupied the premises and the CODESPOTI brothers [see updated information below] continued the tradition when they took over the premises in 1985, naming their business, Bayside Barber Shop. Update July 2024: Reza SABAHI, who currently operates as a barber from the same shop, contacted us with updated information. Domenic CODESPOTI was Tony CODESPOTI's father. Reza SABAHI took over the premises in September 2017 and operates it as Barbers of Port Melbourne proudly continuing the history of barbers at O'Brien's Terrace.A4 copy of poster for Bayside Barber Shop in O'BRIEN's Terrace, Port Melbourneo'brien's terrace, bayside barber shop, domenic codespoti, tony codespoti, mr a brown, charles skegg, a.c. fitzgerald, james burke, v clifford, b wilkins, a dowling, j r willoughby, mrs n wooding, charlie goldfarb, barbers of port melbourne, reza sabahi -

From a box of photographs in Nancy U'REN's papers used during research for her thesis, The Early Growth and Development of Sandridge (1976) and/or her book with Noel TURNBULL, A History of Port Melbourne (1983). The print was probably made by her son, Andrew U'REN, and he may have also taken the photograph. The photograph includes two people on the median strip. It is unclear what they are doing or what has happened just before the photograph was taken. Photograph, Angelika ship departing Ithaca, c 1951
Prior to the advent of the ferry service Ithacans who wished to travel to the mainland sailed by ship. The 'Angelika', photographed in Ithaca's port harbour of Vathi, transported most of the post WWII Ithacan migrants to the main Greek port of Piraeus to embark for their journey to Australia. Migration from Ithaca to Australia ceased during the second world war years. A second wave commenced in the post war years, particular following the 1953 earthquakes which caused catastrophic damage to the island. Today travel between Ithaca and the mainland is by ferry boats. Ships and ferry boats no longer enter the harbour at Vathi, but rather dock at Piso Aetos. A black and white photograph with a thin white border of a ship steaming out of a harbour with smaller craft in the water. People are standing on the wharf watching the boat depart; behind them are buildings and mountains across the skyline. -

Print, View of Vathi, Ithaca
The reproduction print is of artwork depicting 'old' Vathi. Vathi is the main town and the largest settlement on the island of Ithaca in Greece, possibly established during the period of Venetian rule. The town resembles an amphitheatre, built around the coastline of one of the most natural ports of Greece. Many of the old buildings were destroyed in the catastrophic earthquakes of 1953. The length of the port is 926 m. with an entrance of 300 m. in width. It was once the main port for ferries transporting goods and people to and from the mainland. Ferries now dock at Piso Aetos. In the summer the harbour of Vathi is filled with sailing boats and yachts. During the periods of Venetian (c1500 - 1797) and English (1809 - 1864) rule, the population of Vathi grew significantly, reaching a total of 5,000 residents. During this period Vathi became an important centre for trade and commerce, political activities and legal proceedings.A black and white drawing of the harbour of Vathi .
