David was a member of the Mann family who began their business in Wodonga in 1920. This item was originally made to put around a farm or herd animal to enable it to be identified and found if it strayed. Horses, cows, goats and oxen were the animals most commonly given neck bells in Australia as a way of identifying and finding cattle particularly in areas where prpoerties were unfenced or when droving large herds of mixed cattle. Drovers often marked these bells as a way of identifying which cattle belonged to them. Some of these bells from the 1860's onwards were imported to Australia and some were manufactured locally. The cow bell in various sizes is often still produced to sell to tourists, particularly those in Europe. Many of these souvenir bells contain some form of art work. Although this item has no known local provenance it is retained as an early example of the bells placed around animals’ necks to stop them from straying. This is a piece of metal welded to form a cover or a bell container with a bottom opening to hold a metal clapper which is held in place by a metal ring. The top has a metal handle. This folder of text and photographic memorabilia relating to Robert Wilson Baxter (1935py) is a fascinating record of this former student's service and ultimate sacrifice for his country. Robert Baxter was awarded the George Medal on the 28th July 1942 for heroism in rescuing a fellow crewman from the burning wreck of their aircraft. The Medal was received by his family after Robert's death on 7th August 1942 as a result of an accident while taking off on operations. Robert Baxter's father, also Robert Wilson Baxter, was a Ballarat businessman who purchased the Ballarat Star Newspaper in 1897, selling it to the Courier in 1924. He was also part of Baxter and Stubbs Pty. Ltd. (Printers). Robert's mother attended Mrs Kennedy's School for Girls. Items in the folder have historical significance as they document the service and sacrifice of a RAAF sergeant during World War Two. J. J. Leahy set up his retail electrical business in 1946 selling fridges, stoves and washers after commencing work wiring peoples’ homes in the late 1940’s. He developed the business into a large retail store and electrical contracting business which operated locally and Australia wide... He also ran Beattie and Phillips Funeral directors. The electrical business had several locations along Koroit Street before finally establishing on the south east corner of Fairy and Koroit Street. Jim died in November 26th 2008. The store is still run by his nephew Robert Askew. Jimmy Leahy was involved in the City council for a number of years and served as town mayor. The minutes contained in this book especially the information written in the Managing directors reports, provides an overview not just of a business but of business practice and the changes which occurred in life over the 40 year period. It contains events such as the introduction of television, refrigerated dairies and dates for tenders for major building programs such as WIAE, East Warrnambool School, Town Hall. Bemm River is a small township in East Gippsland. There have been several Bemm River hotels since 1891 when the first Hotel was built by Henry Summer. This Hotel was located near a ford where traffic crossed the river. Annie Morgan was the next person to have a roadside licence to sell liquor at Bemm River, also known as Sydenham Inlet Hotel. In 1927, a hotel was built on the present site at Bemm River, again with the Morgan family. Like many hotels, the Bemm River hotel has burned down or suffered damage through fires and was rebuilt. These photos are likely of a fire at the Hotel in 1994 which resulted in the hotel burning down. Sherwood Ltd. Was a manufacturer of oil lamps and burners at the Nechells Park Works Birmingham UK and regarded at the time as a renowned name in the oil lamp and burner manufacturing industries in Birmingham during the early part of the 20th century. They started selling as ‘Isaac Sherwood & Son Ltd.’ in 1904, later around 1920 they merged with Linley and Co makers of American pattern lamps and became ‘Sherwood-Linley” moving to 44-50, Granville St. Birmingham. They became one of the largest manufacturers of lighting devices and burners in England. They produced all sorts of illumination devices and became famous for their oil burners. Apart from oil burners, they produced table and floor lamps, sconces, lanterns and chandeliers that made Sherwood unique. A Significant item as part of a kerosene lamp that was commonplace in homes and other premises during the early 20th century as a means of lighting before electric lighting became the standard. John Cecil Burton and his brother Cecil Hubert formed The Leicester Rubber Company in 1906, to sell imported cycle tyres. The Company's patriotic 'John Bull' trade mark came into force a few years later in 1908. In 1915 the Rubber Company started to manufacture its own bicycle and pram tyres at its Evington Valley Road site in Leicester, and in 1928 they started to mass produce car and motorcycle tyres at the site. The name was changed to the John Bull Rubber Company in 1934, and in 1937 an associated company was formed to manufacture rubber to metal components - Metalastic. The photograph is from the Brian Walsh Collection 1993. Three blocks of land were purchased in 1946 by Miss F. Ritchie and Mrs H. Grimshaw in Halford St. Inverloch. Three more blocks were purchased in 1948 - 1949. A sixth block was added in 1956. Money was raised by P.F.A. members. Two buildings were purchased from the Government Disposals Authority in 1959. Construction of the camp began in October 1959. Regular working bees were held by P.F.A. members. The first camp was held at the site at Easter 1960. The camp was opened by the Moderator the Rt. Rev. A. Creighton Barr and Flinders Presbytery ministers. In 1998 the decision was taken to sell the site. There were numerous events in Kew, held during World War I, to support the War Effort. The 'Our Heroes' Carnival was held in the Kew Recreation Hall [dem. 1960], Wellington Street on the weekend of 9 and 10 August 1918. The event was held to gain financial support for the Lady Mayoresses' Patriotic League. Three press reports [see references] describe or illustrate the event. Organisation of the event was led by the Mayoress, Mrs Wynne, with the assistance of Mrs. H. Dodd and Mr. Hamilton Wilson. Stalls were operated by women selling items donated or created by individuals, organisations or institutions. While the badge is not mentioned in the references, it was clearly able to be purchased as a symbol of support for the event and for the cause for which it raised funds.The badge appropriates cultural symbols for political purposes. It is a rare example of a three-dimensional badge created to support Australian soldiers abroad during WW1. It is unusual in that the inscription is localised to the municipality rather than using a generic label. Two documents that show that in 2003 Melbourne Legacy decided to sell two of its properties, 22 Selwood St, Hawthorn East and 9 The Avenue, Windsor. This decision was taken due to rising maintenance costs and that the money raised from the sale of the properties could be used to benefit all 24,000 widows under their care. One document was a statement by President Tony Parkes about the decision and the other a letter from Jellis Craig offering to be involved in the sale. They had read about the decision in the Leader newspaper. No time frame had been set and all residents of these two properties would be consulted by Legacy personnel with a family member present. This skirt was made by the Fletcher Jones company as part of the uniform of the Penleigh Grammar School, Essendon, Melbourne. David Fletcher Jones (1895-1977) setup as a travelling hawker in the 1920s selling drapery in Western Victoria. In 1924 he opened a store in Warrnambool, moving into a two-storeyed building in Liebig Street in 1931. He manufactured and sold men's clothing at this site, opening a store in Melbourne in 1946 and a factory in Warrnambool in 1948. The company of Fletcher Jones and Staff, established in 1951, opened more stores and factories and operated Australia-wide and became well-known firstly for its production of men's trousers and later men's and women's clothing. By 2011 the Warrnambool factory was sold and the company dissolved. This skirt is of interest as a fine example of the quality clothing made by the Fletcher Jones clothing company. This business commenced in Warrnambool and was a dominant one in Warrnambool (and Australia) during the 20th century.This is a woman's tartan skirt in green and navy tonings. The skirt is pleated at the back and sides and has a silver-coloured metal buckle at the left side. This plan was for the sale of parcels of land from the Lerderderg Park Estate property in 1911. Advertising for the sale appeared in the Bacchus Marsh Express newspaper through July of 1911. The property was situated only a few kilometers from the township of Bacchus Marsh. The agents for the sale were L. A. Fairbairn & Co.Lerderderg Park Estate was a significant and early colonial property in the Bacchus Marsh area. This plan provides details about the first time the property was subdivided for sale. This docket book has been used to enter sales from the Cramond and Dickson department store in Warrnambool and to provide the customer with a copy of the invoice. It dates from about the 1960s. John Cramond and James Dickson, two pioneer settlers in Warrnambool, established the Carmond and Dickson store in Warrnambool in 1855, initially selling groceries, drapery and ironmongery but later, at the corner of Liebig and Timor Streets, this department store sold mainly clothing and drapery. In the 1860s a Cramond and Dickson store was opened in London. The Cramond and Dickson store, a most important business in Warrnambool, operated until 1973. The docket book was printed by Lamson Paragon, a British firm that was established in Australia in 1897 and specialized in printing sales docket books with a carbon paper insert.This docket book is of interest as a memento of the Cramond and Dickson Store, one of the most significant businesses ever to have operated in WarrnamboolThis is a docket book containing 46 pages of white printed sheets bound with green tape and enclosed in a green patterned paper cover on the front and a piece of cardboard on the back. Put together by a member of the Eltham Gateway Action Group (EGAG) in participation with various artists, writers, local business people and other local citizens and sent to Minister Maclellan, Planning Minister in the Kennet Government in protest of proposed plans to sell the former Eltham Shire Office site at 895 Main Road Eltham in order to develop a Shell Service Station and Hungry Jacks fast food outlet. The purpose was to express what is unique about the character of Eltham, why people live and work there and why such a development would be out of character and inappropriate for the Eltham Gateway along with alternative development proposals. Women’s Auxiliaries were formed by mothers, wives, widows, sisters, daughters and aunts of men who served in the First World War. In May1918 a small band of women from the "Friendly Union" organised themselves,under the leadership of Mrs F C Purbrick, into a Women's Auxiliary of the Wangaratta Returned Soldiers Association (RSA). Their first task was to furnish club rooms for the RSA and this was achieved by seeking donations and raising money by selling jams, jellies and posies of violets by selected girls wearing special badges in the street. Over the years funds have been raised through raffles, competitions, street stalls and catering at numerous events to assist the aims of the Returned Services League. In 2018 the Wangaratta RSL Women's Auxiliary celebrated its centenary. Women have played a central role in sustaining the activities of ex-service organisations. Women's auxiliaries are dedicated to fundraising, supporting the activities of their local RSL, and caring for veterans in their wider community. This map was produced sometime around mid 1909 to advertise portions of land from the Greystones Estate for sale by public tender. The selling agents were Young Brothers of Horsham and L.A. Fairbairn of Bacchus Marsh and Melbourne. The seller was Molesworth R. Greene who was a pioneer pastoralist in the Bacchus Marsh area and had also acquired other properties in Victoria and interstate. Molesworth Greene died in 1916 so this sale came towards the end of his life. A total of 4,176 acres was offered for sale in multiple lots. Successful tenderers could buy single or multiple lots. The results of the sale were reported in the Bacchus Marsh Express newspaper on the 16th October 1909, page 3. At the sale a total of 3, 420 acres was sold. A single page paper map showing portions of land for sale from the Greystones Estate near Bacchus Marsh. The map includes extensive details about the property, number of allotments for sale, terms and conditions of the sale and prices. The map includes an inserted reference map showing the location of the property in relation to Melbourne, Geelong, Ballarat and Castlemaine. The top of the map appears to be missing resulting in some loss of the text. The sale notice in the Bacchus Marsh Express of 10 July, 1909, page 3, column 1 appears to duplicate the text overall in the auction plan. Based on this the missing text is likely to be: "Important Subdivisional Sale 'Of Portion of One of the Best and Most Favourably known Estates IN THE RENOWNED BACCHUS MARSH DISTRICT. And situated only six miles from that prosperous township, two miles from Rowsley, and three miles from Parwan, all Railway towns, connected with the Estate by metal roads." The photograph was taken on the 20th of June 2004 at Bob Dunnett’s place in Wooragee. Bob Dunnett is more popularly known in Beechworth as the owner of Beechworth Berries who oversees around 30,000 strawberry plants on his farm in Wooragee. He comes from a long line of fruit growers, as the son of an orchardist, who was the son of a fruit grower. Bob Dunnett provides strawberries to his fellow townspeople opting to sell his fruit at local markets. National Tree Day is Australia’s largest tree-planting and nature care event as trees, shrubs and grasses are very important in Indigo Shire. The event started in 1996 and since then more than 3.8 million people have planted 24 million trees and plants. As Wooragee community and by extension Indigo Shire value nature such as trees, shrubs and grass, this photograph is significant as it demonstrates community commitment to ensuring the continuity of nature in the region. In 1905, Mr. Frank Jarvis and Mr. Tommy Garner formed Conway Stewart & Co. Limited at 13 Paternoster Row EC1, next to St Paul’s Cathedral in London. Today, this area is known as Paternoster Square having been redeveloped after its complete destruction during the Blitz of World War II. Although there is much debate regarding the origins of the Company’s name, it is believed that the name “Conway Stewart” derives from a popular vaudeville act of the day. Conway and Stewart were supposedly a comedy double act who appeared at Collins Music Hall in Islington. The two entrepreneur took a great risk in leaving their secured jobs to start a new enterprise reselling fountain pens made by other manufacturers. They concentrated their energies and invested in importing pens from the United States. After an arduous month of persistent selling of their stock, they reaped the rewards of a rather healthy turnover of more than £13 and 9 shillings. This was a great accomplishment considering that the rent for their business premises was only five shillings a week. Even though this turnover would be pleasing to many new ventures, the strength of De La Rue in the fountain pen market made it impossible for the company to continue selling no-named fountain pens. In the same year, De La Rue reportedly invested £50,000 in a promotion campaign for their new launch, the Onoto. However, Garner and Jarvis soon recognized there was an audience desiring good, reliable writing instruments that were also affordable. This is when Conway Stewart began to capture a market amongst the English. Jarvis and Garner developed a single aim, to produce elegant and beautiful, yet functional writing instruments – a principle that Conway Stewart holds true to this day.Red "Conway Stewart Ink" bottle with black metal lid and red round label. Diggers & Mining. Stores at the diggings. MONDAY, MARCH 29 - Went down with Mr. Armstrong into a neighbouring glen to make a seizure of a sly grog-shop . . . When we arrived at the grog shop we found a policeman already standing as sentry at the door and others, carbines in hand, standing round. Mr. Armstrong went in, ordered all he found inside to be handcuffed, and proceeded to search. The man, however had been too much for him - we only discovered half a keg of port. However the selling had been sworn to by a police spy, and so the tent was doomed. The culprit's own spade was used to knock his tent down, and his wife actually helped to pull the stakes out of the ground. All the woodwork was piled, and a glorious bonfire was made.
