Victor Ernest COBB OM (14 August 1876-2 December, 1945) Born Footscray, Victoria Victor Cobb studied drawing under Bernard Hall at the National Gallery School in 1896. He was self taught in the art of etching, creating his own press and tools. He became known for his popular views of Melbourne and as a teacher of etching. Melbourne Grammar School marked its sesquicentenary in 2008. As part of the celebrations, a Talents Committed Exhibition was staged. This exhibition recognised 150 Old Melburnians who have made a difference to the City of Melbourne, the State of Victoria and the wider community in Australia and overseas. The history starts with the following: The Ballarat College of Advanced Education was formed in 1976 by the merging of the State College of Victoria at Ballarat and the Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education. Each of the two institutions forming the Ballarat College of Advanced Education had a unique history of Development. The parent body of the Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education was the School of Mines and Industries, Ballarat. The original school was founded in 1870 by the Ballarat Mining Board with the support of local residents interested in assisting the then flourishing gold mining industry by training personnel for all levels of mining activities. The first awards were at the professional diploma level leading to Associateship of the School of Mines were made in 1896 to various branches of Engineering, Metallurgy and geology. ... On the evening of February 17, 1960, 74 peacetime commandos in army boats set off on a training exercise from Point Lonsdale to Point Nepean, simulating a raid. Swept out to sea through The Rip as they crossed the bay from Point Lonsdale, George ''Taffy'' Drakopoulos and Eddie Meyer drowned before they could be rescued. Another man, Roger Wood, selflessly helped his fellow commandos up a rope ladder to safety from a Zodiac inflatable, only to be flung off the end into an angry sea somewhere beyond The Rip.
