Series of four photographs featuring the Special trains on the occasion of the ARHS special train on Saturday 21/8/1971 to undertake the last tour of Ballarat Tramways, prior to the closure of the system. "ARARAT WAR MEMORIAL.- Remarkable simplicity and beauty are combined in the Ararat war memorial, which will be unveiled by Senator H.E. Elliott to-morrow. The monument is a simple rectangular stone mass, 12ft in length, 6ft in width, and 18ft m height, standing on a bluestone platform of three steps in the centre of a formal garden Surrounding the memorial is a bronze frieze, conceived from the classic frieze of the Parthenon in Athens depicting incidents in Australian engagements overseas. The frieze took the sculptor (Mr Wallace Anderson) two years to complete. The memorial was designed and supervised by Mr A.S. Hall. Bob Davis (1945) was a member of the 1951-1952 Geelong's premiership teams, captain from 1955-1958 and the club's best and fairest in 1957. Bob played 189 games for Geelong from 1948-1958 and was also inducted into to the AFL Hall of Fame. He boarded at the school from 1939. The Log Cabin was built by Thomas Henry Branchflower who had arrived from England late in 1921. It was built for Gwendoline Pitman after the death of her father Clarence Pitman and the disappearance of her sister Olive in July 1926. Gwendoline operated an artist and souvenir shop in the newly built Log Cabin in partnership with Peter Mackey who was a Melbourne optician and artist.
