The photograph was associated with Harry Holmes who was a member of the Australian Imperial Force based in Egypt at the time. Gordon Spittle was the youngest of Three brothers. He grew up in Creswick and attended Creswick Grammar School. Gordon purchased 'Mt Cavern' in 1912. It had 4 years of a 10 year lease to run. His mother and father took delivery of it on 1 April 1916. They lived there and farmed it until Gordon returned from active service in May 1919. He married Violet Holmes and both lived at "Mt Cavern" until their deaths. Gordon died in 1942 aged 51. FALLS CREEK ROPE TOWS Toni St Elmo brought back plans for a Hamilton rope tow from New Zealand. He had a rope tow built in the summer of 1950-51 and it went into operation the following winter. Skiers were charged 10/- per day to use it. Skiers held onto the rope with a locking device called a ‘nutcracker” attached to a webbing belt. This tow, known as the Nissen Tow, continued to operate until 1960. Bob Hymans installed a shorter portable rope tow for his guests at Skyline from 1954. Other tows included the Village Tow and the Nursery Tow. Eventually most of the tows were taken over by Alpine Developments. From 1960 onwards they were gradually replaced by T-bars and then later on by chairlifts. This belt is from the original rope tow used between 1951 and 1960 in the Falls Creek ski lifts. These items are significant because were part of the earliest rope tows constructed at Falls Creek.A canvas waist belt with leg hoops and metal joining and hook used to attach skier to the rope tow. Wanting to improve upon the limitations of existing Braillers, the Perkins School for the Blind resolved to develop a new machine that would produce uniformity in embossing, was lightweight and was easy to use. By the 1940's, David Abrahams (a teacher at the school) had developed his prototype, but manufacturing restrictions created by World War 2 halted proceedings. In the waiting period, students at the school used the prototype and Abrahams perfected his device. During the post-war era, Howe Press agreed to take on production of the Perkins Brailler and it became of the most popular and commonly used Braillers around the world since it's commercial release in 1951. Also included is a booklet of photocopied instructions with honeycomb binding.Metal Braille writer with nine grey keys, carriage return key and paper rollers on either side, with grey vinyl cover, and photocopied instruction booklet.'Perkins Brailler' embossed on front of machine and in silver on cover. This Kuraburn Bottle is part of a Sanax First Aid Case which was used at the the former Carnegie Senior Citizens' Centre. The centre was located at 314 Neerim Road, Carnegie. When the Neerim Road facility closed, its activities were moved to the Carnegie Library and Community Centre. For Occupational Health and Safety reasons, Council no longer maintains first aid kits at senior citizens' centres. Clear glass bottle with two paper labels on narrow side. One red, green, white and black label with Sanax branding, one red and white label at base of bottle with address and contact details. Black plastic screw-top lid with a section missing. Bottle has been decanted however some residue remains. M1 Steel helmet used onboard HMAS Kanimbla. These M1Steel helmets were first issued in 1941 to the United States Armed Forces. They were adopted after the Korean War by the Australian Defence Force. In the 1990s they were replaced by the Kevlar based Personnel Armour System-Ground Troop (PASGT) type helmet. However, as evidenced by this helmet, some M1 Steel helmets were not replaced in-service by the PASGT helmet and survived into the early 21st Century. Interestingly, the Nato Stock Number (NSN) printed on the inside of the helmet liner indicates that this helmet was made for a Bulgarian contract, as evidenced by the NSN National code of 50 in the second group of numbers in the stock number. HMAS Kanimbla (LPA-51) was built for the United States Navy as USS Saginaw and was launched on 7 February 1970. Kanimbla was commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy in August 1994. Kanimbla was heavily involved in Operation Slipper conducting a variety of tasks such as patrol, mine recovery. During Operation Slipper, Kanimbla also conducted 27 compliant boardings and 23 non-compliant boardings in the Persian Gulf in 2001-2.Standard issue United States M1 pattern steel helmet, olive drab in colour with liner. Biscuit tin: late 19th century Swallow & Ariell operated continuously in Port Melbourne from 1858 to 1991. The former Swallow & Ariell’s factory buildings, now The Anchorage, continue to add interest and pleasure along Stokes, Rouse and Princes Streets. Thomas Swallow, born in Reading, travelled to California and Ballarat before setting up a business making ships biscuits in Port Melbourne. His business partner Ariell died in 1877. He then went into partnership with Frederick Derham, his son in law. Company farms around Shepparton provided much of its wheat, and after 1889 most was ground into flour on the Port Melbourne premises. For the year ending 1 May 1920, the factory used 51 tons of butter, 2,740 eggs and produced more than 66 lines of biscuits. They also made puddings, elaborate cakes and ice cream. S & A was a significant employer – locally referred to as S & A College. The Norman Oliver collection. Norman Oliver was three times Mayor of Bendigo - 1950-51, 1964-65, 1970-71. Three typed pages - a covering letter from City Hall dated 19th February 1964, to the Head teacher regarding the allocation of sports grounds for 1964, a weekly timetable for the use of each ground by a particular school, and a list of special allocations. The grounds allocated are : Queen Elizabeth Oval, Showgrounds, Kennington, Golden Square, Ewing Park, Wilkie Park, Centenary Oval, Garden Gully, Garden Gully (new Basketball courts), North Bendigo Recreation Reserve, Allingham St., Quarry Hill, White Hills, Long Gully, and Londonderry. The West Bendigo Cricket Club has operated for over 100 years with their home ground being the Ken Wust Oval at Quarry Hill. A Committee manages the club which plays men's competition in the Emu Valley Cricket Association and the women in the Bendigo District Cricket Association.Four black and white photographs of the West Bendigo Cricket Club who were Premiers in the Protestant Young Men's Cricket Association in Seasons 1948, 49, 50, 51. The men in the team photographs are all dressed in cricket whites with arms crossed with the exception of two batsmen who are padded and holding cricket bats. Jonathan Harris operated a winery on the banks of the Axe Creek, Axedale in the 1850s An oval metal wash tub. The base has a four centmetres metal band around it that extends two and a half centimetres below the bottom of the tub. The bottom of the tub is an oval 54 centimetres long and 41 centimeters wide. The wall is 32 centimetres high with rolled rim half a centimetre wide on the top, it's made in two pieces that are folded together at each end. The top of the tub is an oval 70 centimetres long and 51 centimetres wide. There are identical metal handles at the top of the tub at each end, they are made of a one centimetre diameter metal rode, they have a nine centimetres long grip, a four centimetre piece at right angles on each end and a two centimetre long piece at the opposite right angle on the end which is inserted into a two centimetre loop that's attached to the tub. The Post War Planning Report was prepared by Leslie M. Perrott & Partners: (City Planning Consultants) and according to the report, it was submitted to the Council of the Municipality of Caulfield through its Special Committee on Post War Planning. The report has no evident date however the introduction text suggests that it was prepared before the end of World War II. The report is the only known extant copy and therefore considered rare. Bound report with grey cover titled: "Report to the Post War Planning Committee Caulfield City Council". Interior pages include x83 pages typed text printed on blue print paper; x3 pages copies of black and white photographs; 10 blueprint plans. 86 pages consistent in size with book cover, 10 x blueprint plans varying dimensions, folded and bound within the report. Printed on white sticker on spine of book "LH 994. 51" and on first page inside "CAULFIELD LIBRARY SERVICE REFERENCE BOOK" and on the verso of this page, another stamp with CAULFIELD LIBRARY SERVICE and LH REF 12/7 hand written in black ink and a 14 digit reference number below this. On the back of the last plan in the book, there is a blue stamp with "REFERENCE BOOK TO BE USED IN THE LIBRARY ONLY". Below this is a black and white barcode with a black line through it and a round, blue sticker beside it.
