Else Oertel was a German internee in Camp 3A from 1940-1945. The penny-brooch is an example of the ingenuity of the internees in making use of anything at hand & repurposing it for much more than originally intended. Else's daughter, Else-Lore Hukins donated the item. Says Else-Lore of the brooch: "Jewellery was made out of available metals. Pennies made a bright brooch and especially interesting if it featured the current year it was given".Brooch fashioned from Australian 1943 penny. Else Oertel was an internee in Camp 3A from 1940-1945. Else (a German) was interned in a camp where Russian was being taught & so took up lessons. Her husband was away on business in Germany at the outbreak of war and was not interned with them & therefore Else was also motivated to learn Russian because it was possible she would be repatriated to the Russian sector of Germany at the end of the war (namely Chemnitz, Saxony). The camp sites today are on private property, and as they were dismantled after the war, and on the closure of the Migrant camp, very little physical evidence remains today.Camp 3 held 1000 internees, Germans, Jews and Italians, including German Lutheran families from New Guinea, German families from Palestine (Templer settlement) and Austrian Jewish refugees. Tina Wentscher was born in Istanbul to Jewish Parents and grew up in Berlin. Lived in Indonesia 1931 - 1932 - 1933, China 1932 - 1933, Thailand 1935 - 1936, Singapore 1936 - 1937, Malaysia 1936 - 1940. Interned as an enemy alien in Tatura 1940 - 1942.
