Melbourne Legacy
Photograph, Daddy's Home, 1995
Photograph of a painting by Mrs Fonce Kerr that was donated to Legacy. It was exhibited at the Legacy Widows' Arts and Crafts Exhibition in 1995. The article mentions Mrs Kerr was the ex-President of the Waverley Legacy Widows' Club. 'The picture is titled "Daddy's Home" and depicts the lower half of a serviceman dressed in khaki trousers and combat boots. Hugging his leg is a little girl in a blue dress. Words really don't describe the situation - seeing is better. It is a nostalgic depiction of considerable meaning to all members of our Legacy family - widows, dependents and Legatees. Mrs Kerr has generously presented the picture to Legacy - it will hang in the First Floor Dining Room.' Information from the donor by email gives: Norma Pryde is identified as the girl in the second row on the far right. Her parents Norman & Hilda Pryde lived at 50 Broughton Road, Surrey Hills. The home was named 'Strathaven' after the town in Scotland where Norman's father came from. Norman & Hilda were married in 1923. Norma was born in 1924. Norman worked for Moran & Cato so the family moved around a lot for his work and is thought to have rented out the house from time to time. During some time in the 1920s they were listed on electoral rolls in Nyah West and then in 1942 they were listed in Hamilton. When the war ended they came back to Melbourne and in the late 1940s built a home at Blackburn. Norma married John Cleak in 1947 in Camberwell. This photo is representative of the large classes that were common in the interwar period. An original B&W postcard photo of a class taken outside against a brick wall. There are 34 boys in 2 rows. A photo and two hand written notes about a former Legacy Girls' Class attendant in 1993. It appears there was a visit by a legatee and a legatee's wife to a former junior legatee, showing that people kept in contact with Legacy for a long time. The photo shows Florence Moore (nee Moll) and her husband Bert being visited by Legatee George Standish and Jane Sullivan, who was the wife of Legatee John Sullivan (President in 1991). The note with the photo says it was for the archive in 1993. The handwritten letter from the Moores says: Dear George (Standish), . . . Enclosed is the photo I promised to send you we are Bert and Florence Moore (nee Moll). . . We enjoyed the day very much and it was sad news to learn that Flo Kennedy (one of the original Legacy girls) had passed away. Regards, Bert and Florence. Photograph, Kew Light Opera Company, A Country Girl, 1957
The Kew Light Opera Company was formed in 1952, and mounted a number of musical and variety productions each year until it was subsumed in the "Q" Theatre Guild in 1957. A partial record of performances by the company includes: 1952 Florodora, 1953 The Cingalee - San Toy or The Emperor's Own, 1954 While the Sun Shines - A Country Girl - Our Miss Gibbs, 1955 The Toreador - The Arcadians, 1956 The Maid of the Mountains - Whiteoaks - Goodnight Vienna!, 1957 A Country Girl. Most of the Company's performances took place in the Kew Recreation Hall in Wellington Street, Kew. The scrapbook of annotated photographs, programmes, and newspaper reviews of which this item is a part was assembled by Marion Tilley, wardrobe mistress for, and performer in, productions by the Kew Light Opera Company and the "Q" Theatre Guild. It is significant as a remarkably complete document of theatre performances in Kew, Victoria during the 1950s and 1960s. The scrapbook, and the items individually catalogued within it, have artistic and aesthetic significance within the history of performing arts in Victoria in the middle of the 20th Century. They have social significance in that they reveal socio-cultural values and preoccupations during the period. The records also act as a history of arts activities in the Kew Recreation Hall and later in the Kew City Hall as entertainment and community arts and music precincts.Sepia-toned photograph of Nancy Ball and Stan Wilson in the Kew Light Opera Company's production of A Country Girl by Lionel Monckton.
