The post card is one of a set that were produced by Chris Christainsen, who had a pharmacy in Sunbury and was also a photographer. The four photos featured on the card are the Rupertswood Mansion, St Mary's Church of England, Jacksons Creek in floods ands Sunbury Railway station.The buildings and places featured on the card are of historical significance in the Sunbury town precinct. This is a photograph of the bridge in the Bulla township which spans the Deep Creek, a tributary of the Maribyrnong River. It has been constructed from bluestone which is found across the volcanic western plains in Victoria. Kaolin was quarried from the cliff face in the background and was used in the making of bricks and pottery products manufactured at Northcote and Brunswick potteries.This is one of the many notable bluestone bridges which were built in the district in the nineteenth century.A black and white photograph of a valley with a five arched bridge spanning a river. The tractor declaiming pollution was being driven in one of the Sunbury Festival celebrations in the early 1970s, which were held in March each year. The street parade where many community organisations participated was popular with the townspeople. The Rupertswood Hotel is visible behind the bystanders and it was demolished in the latter half of the 1970s.The Sunbury Festival was an important community event in Sunbury each year as many community groups participated in it with displays. The recently completed building in the photograph is the Sunbury United Sporting Club's clubrooms, which is in Mitchells Lane, Sunbury. It was built for the local Sunbury soccer club in the 1980s. This complex caters for Australian Rules Football, basketball, netball and other community sporting activities for the Sunbury Community. The Sunbury Leisure Centre in Elizabeth Drive was built as a community learning and activity centre for many local groups in Sunbury. It was completed in 1980 and officially opened on 25th February 1981 by the Premier of Victoria Hon. The dance and concert advertised on the sign was to take place at the hall which was in the grounds of the Sunbury Asylum, commonly referred by residents as 'The Hill'. A number of community events took place at the hall within the asylum complex.The Sunbury Asylum was an important institution for patients, employees and Sunbury residents for many years in the town. The swimmers were seated on the diving board over Jacksons Creek at The Nook, which served as a swimming pool in Sunbury until 1966 when the long-awaited for swimming pool was officially opened in Ligar Street on19th January 1966. For a number of years before the official opening townspeople organised many fund raising events to pay for the new pool. Rupertswood Mansion was the Sunbury residence of the Clarke family from 1874 until 1922 when H.V.McKay of Sunshine Harvester fame bought it from Hon. W.L. Russell Clarke in 1922. After the death of H.V.McKay in 1926, it was purchased by W. Naughton who then sold the mansion and 700 acres of land to the Salesian Fathers, who are the present owners. The huts along the railway line were built to house 'navvies' who worked on and maintained the Bendigo-Echuca railway line. At the time this photo was taken, work was being undertaken on the railway line in the Sunbury area.The Bendigo-Echuca was one of Victoria's earliest government owned and operated regional rail systems. The photograph was taken when some work was being carried out on one of the arched railway bridges on the Sunbury line. The bridge spans the Jackson Creek and across the Rupertswood viaduct. The single span bluestone bridge is on the Calder Highway at the base of Corkscrew Hill between Gap Road and the town of Gisborne. In the early 1990s the highway was widened and dual carriageways constructed, as a result the traffic no longer travelled along the winding Corkscrew Hill road.
