The itinerary of roads is an interesting section listing all features (houses, mills, gates, bridges, stations, bush etc), as well as anecdotal information on some people, covering almost 100 pages of the book. The 'Rules and Regulations' relating to everything from land assigned to convicts, county boundaries to discharged soldiers, ports and quarantine. All arel covered and make for interesting reading. Parliamentarians, coroners, barristers, attorneys, surveyor-generals, surgeons, police, ministers of religion, schools and colleges, banks and insurance companies, auctioneers, mail coaches, exports, arrivals and departures of vessels throughout the year (not including passengers) and more are all listed. There is a reasonable section on the military of New South Wales and the various battalions. The Post Office Directory section covers about 100 pages, listing people alphabetically by surname, occupation and often both home and work address. The directory is divided into approximately 1900 postal localities grouped under 87 larger districts. There is an introduction and summary to each district. It indicates for each landholder whether they are dairy farmers, graziers or agriculturalists and what crops are under cultivation in the following categories - wheat, maize, barley, oats, potatoes, tobacco, sugar, other crops, grapes and orchard fruits. This a wonderful, extensive guide to over 70,000 landholders throughout NSW, by district and postal address. The Municipal Council of Willoughby encompasses the suburbs of Artarmon, Castle Cove, Castlecrag, Chatswood, Chatswood West, Middle Cove, Naremburn, North Willoughby, Northbridge, Willoughby and Willoughby East. The members of the Willoughby Council felt it fitting to produce a history of Willoughby's first 50 years as part of its Jubilee celebrations held in 1915. Covering the period from 1865 to 1915, details of the primary matters of public importance are mentioned, along with council matters and persons. A short account has been written about some of the businesses, industries and institutions. It records over 6,000 graves, some dating back more than 150 years. Index references to total 12,558 entries. Compilation took over 20 years to complete. The graves at Manly Cemetery record two Knights, a Baronet, a General, three MPs, three Mayors of Manly, several Professors, two Judges, two Journalists, a Monsignor, a comedian, a town clerk, a potato merchant, 17 clergymen and a boy scout. Also lying there are the reputed "Man from Snowy River", a CBE, a CMG, a DFC and descendants of the "Flogging Parson", Rev. Samuel MARSDEN. There are people from at least 38 different countries and every state in Australia. The book is divided into three sections; the Eastern division, the Central division and the Western division, all containing information on the areas of land owned. Each pastoral holding includes the land district and county in which each pastoral holding is situated, the area in acres, the annual rent and licence fee and the rate per acre and per section for each leasehold and resumed area respectively together with the names of the registered pastoral holders of the crown. The information is detailed and includes the date of notification in the government gazette. The history covers many aspects of the community public health and safety, transport, education, public buildings, parks, sporting organizations; it also looks at the history of some of the businesses the bakeries, the Australian Gas Light Company, Lewis Berger and Sons, Tulloch's Phoenix Iron Works Ltd., and the British-Australian Lead Manufacturers Ltd. There are "Peeps" at the Past", a map showing land owners in 1833 and many illustrations. Among the prisoners at Longbottom were a large number of the so-called Canadian Exiles transported for a rebellion in French Canada between 1835 and 1838. 1 optical discnon-fictionFree Railway Passes (NSW) Index 1880-1892 This index of 23,899 entries has been compiled from surviving registers of applications for free railway passes. The volumes were transferred from the Chief Secretary's Department to the Mitchell Library in June 1934 and they are now at State Records NSW. These passes were generally issued to those immigrants to the Colony (the "Colony" being NSW) seeking employment in country or outer metropolitan areas; although many were issued to men, women and children for charitable reasons. The date ranges of the registers is not indicative of how long the applicants were in the Colony with some being in the Colony for days or weeks while others were in the Colony for years, from a few to many. Most entries note the applicant's native place, age, married or single and how long in the Colony and include a great amount of other detail with the majority of the records, also ship of arrival in many cases. 1 optical discnon-fictionConvict ticket-of-leave register, Toodyay Acc. 721/30 The Swan River Colony, founded in 1829, as a free settlement needed an injection of capital and an increase in population if it was to thrive. In late 1849 a petition signed by prominent settlers, requesting that male convicts be sent to the Swan River, was submitted to the colonial office. This request was welcomed and transportation officially began to Western Australia in 1850. The first convict ship, the Scindian, arrived at Fremantle on June 1 carrying 75 convicts and a small group of Enrolled Pensioner Guards and their families. Eighteen years later the last convict transport, the Hougoumont, arrived with 280 convicts, mostly Irish political prisoners, making a total of nearly 10,000 convicts arriving in the colony. This availability of cheap labour resulted in many convicts being granted their 'ticket-of-leave' before their sentences had expired, which allowed private settlers to employ them. To facilitate the distribution of working men throughout the settlement, hiring depots were established in key town and country areas. Ticket-of-leave men could not leave their assigned district without permission; had to carry their 'ticket' with them at all times and produce it to any official on demand; as well as lodge an official form with the local magistrate on January 1 and July 1 every year which detailed residence, employer and rate of pay. On the positive side, ticket of leave men were able to choose their own employer and even work for themselves. They could also marry with permission of the authorities and even own land. At the end of their sentences, ex-convicts or 'expirees' were given their freedom, although those with life or long-term sentences were often granted Conditional Pardons, which conferred most of the benefits of freedom but did not allow them to return to England. The movement of convicts around the colony is preserved in the many surviving convict registers which are now kept in the State Records Office of WA . These registers list the names of employers and the dates convicts were employed, and detail the rates of pay and any brushes the convict had with authorities. Many of the employers were themselves 'ticket-of-leave' men, expirees or conditional pardon men. One of the convict hiring depots was at Toodyay and two registers from this institution for the period 1862 to 1870 have been archived in the State Records Office at Accession Number 721, volumes 30 and 31. The impact these men had on the infant colony can best be guessed from the statistical data available from official records. In 1850 there were only 5,000 residents in the colony, but at the end of the convict period the number had risen to 25,000. While some convicts emigrated to other parts of Australia after receiving their conditional pardons, the majority stayed in Western Australia. Some had their families join them from the United Kingdom, while others married the young women who came out on the 'Bride Ships'. An inscription inside the register notes that "This book was written up to date all slips on hand at time being included, last number of Registration Slip being 612" (1915) The book is a calendar index to employees in the Kalgoorlie/Boulder area of the Western Australian goldfields. The earliest registration appears to be on I Maly 1899 when C Carlson was entered. Although the note at the front of the register was written in 1915 entries are listed beyond this date at least to 16 January 1920 when the name of Claud Ernest Andrews of Hewitt St, Kalgoorlie was recorded as being engaged. Quite a number of entries record the date of leaving as 30 April 1921, and the reason for the discharge being "cessation of work". For each entry the Date engaged. Name of Employee, Address, Name of Friendly Society, Recommended by, Occupation. Transferred to, Accidents, Date of Leaving, and Reason for Leaving or Discharge is recorded. Later entries include the age of the employee. Occupations are varied labourer, coach painter, shoveller, filler, miner, dustman, assayer. agitator, shift boss, fireman and many more.
