This set of 10 photographs of the Army Survey Regiment’s victorious rifle shooting team was taken outside the Tavern at Fortuna, Bendigo in c1979. The rifle shooting competition was the ‘Irwin Trophy for Shooting’, a contest with the British Army’s 42nd Engineer Regiment, the equivalent military geographic mapping unit at the time to the Army Survey Regiment. The bent .303 rifle seen in photo .3P was retrieved from the bottom of Fortuna’s lake when it was drained for restoration. This is a set of 14 photographs of Army Survey Regiment personnel undertaking the First Aid phase of regimental training held at Fortuna, Bendigo c1985. This was one of six objectives outlined in the administrative instruction – Exercise “City Soldier” accompanying these photos. The other objectives were weapons skills revision for SLR Rifle and M30 Grenade at Fortuna; RATEL and navigation at Wellsford Forest; and rifle shooting at Wellsford Rifle Range. Original bell from the first Eltham Fire Station in Arthur Street erected on a tower in November 1928, the station opened in January 1929. In 1988 the bell was mounted beneath a wooden sign of Country Fire Authority, Eltham Fire Station, 909 Main Road, Eltham. As of September 2023 the bell is in the same location, with the signboard gone, suspended in a steel metal tower-like frame. The bell has seen service at the original Eltham Fire Station in Arthur Street (1928-1931), Henry Street beside the Rechabite Hall (1931-1935), Main Road (east side, site of present-day Coles 1935-1965) and 909 Main Road (1965-present). In 1988, as part of a local Bicentennial project, the Shire of Eltham conducted the Eltham Community Photographic Survey. Up to 100 entries were to be selected by a panel of photographers for entry into the Eltham Photographic Survey Exhibition. Entries had to be submitted by May 13, 1988. Entrants whose images were selected for the exhibition were contacted and requested to further submit an entry form providing entrant’s name, area of residence, age, and proposed captions. These details were then used to produce labels for the exhibition mounts. Where negatives had not been supplied, these were requested to support the display of printed enlargements mounted on 10” x 8” cardboard. The mounted prints were made available post exhibition for sale at $8.50 each for colour prints and $7.00 for B&W prints. Residents in the Shire were invited to collect a free roll of film and take a photograph of what they either liked or did not like about the area. A total of 160 entrants submitted multiple entries for the exhibition. Of those selected for exhibition, entrants ranged in age from 9 to 70 years. All custom colour and black and white printing for the exhibition was completed by Wattle Studios of Eltham. These nine photographs were taken at a Commanding Officer Handover Parade at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo on the 28th of July 1975. A march past took place after the parade, with each squadron marching down the roadway past Fortuna Villa to salute the outgoing CO LTCOL Donald Ridge, as he stood on the steps at the front of the building. This is a set of 1photographs of surveyors in the field measuring distances using chains, taking observations using theodolites and operating electric distance measurement equipment. They were probably employed in establishing mapping and geodetic control operations or the surveyors may have been in training. The photos were most likely taken in the 1950s and 1960s. Photos .1P to .6P feature personnel setting up geodetic survey chaining equipment to measure distances. The surveyor in Photo .5P is LTCOL Howard Angus Johnson MBE who served from 1936 to 1954. The RA Svy surveyor in photos .7P to .12P were using a theodolite to take angular measurements. They were usually supported by an observer who recording their readings on a booking form. The surveyor in Photo .10P and .11P is LTCOL Jorge Gruszka, who served from 1955 to 1985. He was CO of the Army Survey Regiment from 1982 to 1985. In 1930 he changed profession to a bootmaker and leather worker. The shop is one of only three remaining early 20th century shops in what was Little Eltham, the others being present-day San Antionio Barber Shop at 820 Main Road and Cafe Zen Den at 736 Main Road. SHIRE OF ELTHAM COMMUNITY PHOTOGRAPHIC SURVEY Photography is an artform which many of us practice, sometimes purely for artistic pursuit, sometimes to record the people and events in our lives. In 1988, as part of a local Bicentennial project, the Shire of Eltham conducted the Eltham Community Photographic Survey. Up to 100 entries were to be selected by a panel of photographers for entry into the Eltham Photographic Survey Exhibition. Entries had to be submitted by May 13, 1988. Entrants whose images were selected for the exhibition were contacted and requested to further submit an entry form providing entrant’s name, area of residence, age, and proposed captions. These details were then used to produce labels for the exhibition mounts. Where negatives had not been supplied, these were requested to support the display of printed enlargements mounted on 10” x 8” cardboard. The mounted prints were made available post exhibition for sale at $8.50 each for colour prints and $7.00 for B&W prints. Residents in the Shire were invited to collect a free roll of film and take a photograph of what they either liked or did not like about the area. A total of 160 entrants submitted multiple entries for the exhibition. Of those selected for exhibition, entrants ranged in age from 9 to 70 years. All custom colour and black and white printing for the exhibition was completed by Wattle Studios of Eltham. The Eltham Photographic Survey was jointly auspiced by the Shire of Eltham and Wattle Studios, of 953 Main Road, Eltham. This collection of 23 photos of map production on the AUTOMAP 2 computer-based system in Air Survey and Cartographic Squadrons, was most likely taken in 1986. The AUTOMAP 2 system was an upgrade to the AUTOMAP 1 system, comprising Intergraph graphic edit workstation terminals networked to VAX 750/785 main frame computers. Unlike AUTOMAP 1, operators could display digital topographic features on monitors for editing. Successful adaptation of this system meant RASvy was at the forefront of digital mapping/cartographic systems in Australia and overseas. The system comprised Input (Wild B8 Aviograph feature extraction) Raster Scanning (digitising from compilation sheets, Graphic Edit (cartographic completion) and Plot Verification Sub Systems. The system was operational from 1984 to its ‘Newheart’ upgrade in 1993. This is a set of 16 photographs of Army Survey Regiment personnel undertaking a non-tactical navigation exercise, part of the field phase of regimental training in the Wellsford Forest, Bendigo 1985. This was one of the six regimental training objectives outlined in the administrative instruction – Exercise “City Soldier” accompanying these photos. The other objectives were SLR rifle and M30 grenade handling revision, and first aid at Fortuna; RATEL at Wellsford Forest and rifle shooting at Wellsford Rifle Range. This is a set of 17 photographs taken during the first year of Army occupation at Fortuna, Bendigo in 1942. The photos provide an insight into the preparatory work performed on the Fortuna Villa and surrounding buildings, by the Working Party 5th Army Troop and Ordnance Training Depot, before its occupation by personnel from LHQ Cartographic Company, Royal Australian Survey Corps. The annotation on the back of Photos .9P and .10P is misspelt. The correct spelling is ‘Nell Gwynne’. The poppet head of the Central Nell Gwynne mine is still an iconic landmark in Bendigo, lying just down the road from the poppet head lookout at Victoria Hill. The Central Nell Gwynne was the premier mine of Bendigo's 1930s mining revival and is of high historical value, due to the extensive and relatively intact features which remain at the site. The annotation on the back of Photo .17P is incorrect. The location of HQ 5th Army Troop was ‘Reynard St, Coburg.’ By late 1941 as Japan extended its control throughout Indo-China, resolving the accommodation problem of AHQ Cartographic Company located in Melbourne became more urgent. The steady Japanese advance made the bombing of Melbourne no longer a remote possibility, and in accordance with a general policy of dispersion, the Deputy Chief of the General Staff, Major General Sidney Rowell instructed Major William Sarll, in the interests of security of plant and to provide against possible damage of air attack, to investigate suitable safer inland accommodation for AHQ Cartographic Company. Major Sarll inspected many properties before finding one that would meet the requirements of the Cartographic Company. In late 1941, he came to inspect Fortuna, a rambling old mansion with about fifteen acres of ground in central Bendigo. Initially there was no intention to occupy the site beyond the end of the war, although Major Sarll's report to the Director of Survey noted many advantages in moving the Company to Bendigo. Major General Rowell quickly approved the selection of Fortuna before other authorities, which were investigating the evacuation of school children, could get in ahead of the Cartographic Company. On 23 March 1942, the Commonwealth of Australia, under the provisions of the National Security Act of 1939, took possession of the house, the old battery buildings and the fifteen acres of grounds. Under Warrant Officer J. Trist’s direction, over fifty Parks and Works tradesmen completed building works necessary to accommodate the Survey Corps’ military, map making and printing requirements. The building program was still under way when the first officer, Lieutenant Ralph Westgarth, arrived in May 1942 with the advance party which received and positioned all equipment as it came up from Melbourne in semi-trailers. Once the equipment was installed the rest of the Cartographic Company completed its shift to Bendigo by 11th June 1942. This is a set of 12 photographs of A Section, 1st Topographic Survey Troop taken from the 25th of May to the 12th of June 1966 during their deployment to Vung Tau, Vietnam. Led by OC CAPT Bob Skitch, the ten personnel from A Section 1st Topo Svy Tp and six personnel from supporting units were the first contingent from the Royal Australian Survey Corps deployed to provide topographic support to the Australian Task Force in Vietnam. They arrived in Saigon, Vietnam on the 10th of June 1966 enroute to the Australian Reinforcement Unit (ARU) “back beach” camp in Vung Tau. The ten RA Svy technical personnel from 1st Topo Svy Tp deployed were: WO2 David Christie, SGT Stan Campbell, SGT Dave King, CPL Jim Roberts, CPL Dennis Duquemin, CPL Des Ceruti, SPR Derek Chambers, SPR Brian Firns, SPR Joe O’Connor and SPR Ron Smith. External personnel deployed were: WO2 Snow Rollston from Northern Command Field Survey Unit, T/CPL Peter Clarke – orderly room corporal, T/CPL Alan Carew – Technical Storeman, SPR Stan Johns – Map Storeman, SPR Boots Campbell – batman/driver and PTE BNF Brunning – cook. The ship featured in photos .1P and .2P was the aircraft carrier HMAS Sydney on its 4th voyage to Vietnam. On board were SGT Stan Campbell and SPR Brian Firns, tasked to manage A Section’s stores and equipment. The rest of A Section deployed to Vietnam by air on the chartered Qantas 707B ‘City of Longreach'. A Section’s main tasks were to establish a Theatre Grid, map compilation and map revision; Engineer Survey Support in the camp and to the civil community; give assistance to the Cordon Search Missions by producing large scale plots from aerial photos with every house and fence etc plotted; and then reproduce these by silk screening usually, within a 24-hour period. RA Svy’s support concluded with the withdrawal of Australian troops from Vietnam in 1972. This collection of 20 photos was most likely taken in 1980. The AUTOMAP 1 computer assisted cartography and mapping system was introduced in 1975. The components of AUTOMAP 1 were the Input Sub-System of four Wild B8s stereoplotters and three Gradicon digitising tables, the Optical Line Following Sub-System – Gerber OLF, the Verification Sub-System – Gerber 1442 drum plotter, the General Purpose Sub-system – HP21MX computer and the Output Sub-System – Gerber 1232 flatbed plotter). The first map was published in 1978 (Strickland 3665-3, 1:50,000). AUTOMAP 1 was the first computer assisted cartography and mapping system utilised by the Survey Corps and was the first system used by Australian mapping organisations. This is a collection of seven photographs of Women’s Royal Australian Army Corps (WRAAC) personnel posted to the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo circa 1957 to 1964. After the disbandment of the Australian Women's Army Service (AWAS) in 1947 there was only one or two of civilian women in administrative positions at Fortuna. In February 1957 female positions from the disbanded Southern Command Field Survey Section in Melbourne were transferred to newly established positions at the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment, Bendigo. They were accommodated at the newly acquired ‘Turriff’ mansion in Carpenter Street, Bendigo. Their first Officer Commanding (OC) was CAPT Beryl Perry from 1957 to September 1960. Her replacement as OC was CAPT Carol Castor who served in several positions up to June 1967. The main areas of employment in these early days were in administrative positions, draughting in and retouching in Lithographic Squadron. WO2 MA McLaren was the female to reach the rank of WO2 as a Cartographic Squadron section commander in June 1961. WO1 Marj Knight served at Fortuna from 1959 to 1978 was the first female to reach the rank of WO1. WO1 Knight served in the senior Squadron Sergeant-Major and Technical Warrant Officer positions of Cartographic Squadron. She was also the first female PMC of the Army Survey Regiment SGT’s Mess. The WRAAC uniform seen in this collection was replaced in 1979. This collection of 16 photos was most likely taken in 1978. Mr Denis James “Jim” Killen was the Minister for Defence in the Fraser Government from 1975 to 1982. It’s evident in these photos he was taken on a tour through the production areas in Air Survey, Cartographic and Lithographic Squadrons. Jim Killen served in the RAAF in WW2 and later had an illustrious career in politics. After receiving his knighthood and an AC for service to Australia, he was known as Sir Denis James "Jim" Killen, AC, KCMG. This is a set of 10 photographs of surveyors and support staff in the field undertaking duties in the Northern Territory and North Queensland in 1959 – 1960. The surveyors were employed in the establishment of mapping and geodetic control. In this era surveyors used theodolites to observe horizontal and vertical angles and tellurometers to measure base line distances between survey stations. Laplace survey observations seen in Photo .1P was a series of precise observations carried out at geodetic survey stations to determine astronomic latitudes, longitudes and azimuths to achieve maximum precision in the survey network. Laplace observations were necessary in a geodetic network at every 6th survey station, however the National Mapping Council specified at this time the spacing would be ideally between 4-6 survey stations. The cairn shown in photo .4P was built by RASvy as a landmark over a trigonometric survey station. It was dismantled in 1960 to enable re-occupation and survey observations. This is a set of nine photographs of Defence Force Service Medal presentations by the Chief of the General Staff (CGS) Lieutenant General Sir Donald Dunstan AC, KBE, CB; at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo on the 5th of June 1979. The photos were taken next to the flagpole in Fortuna Villa’s front garden. Upon retirement from the Army in 1982, Lieutenant General Sir Donald Dunstan AC, KBE, CB; was appointed to the position of Governor of South Australia from 1982 to 1991. On this occasion the CGS presented the Defence Force Service Medal to WO2 Alex Cairney, WO1 Bob Mason and WO2 Ken Slater for 15 years of efficient remunerated service in the Australian Army. It is likely the unidentified UK Exchange senior NCO was the recipient of the UK Army’s equivalent service medal. Other key staff appearing in these photos are LTCOL Bob Skitch was the CO of the Army Svy Rgt from 1976 to 1980 and WO1 Aub Harvey, who was RSM from 1976 to 1982. MAJ Don Swiney MBE was later promoted to LTCOL and was CO of the Army Svy Rgt from 1985 to 1987. He was subsequently promoted to Colonel and was Director of the Royal Australian Survey Corp from November 1988 to January 1991, and the honorary position as Colonel Commandant from January 1993 to January 1996. These photographs were taken at Flag Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment and the School of Military Survey, at Bendigo on the 10th of October 1986. The two RASvy units took turns each year to host the event. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cross country, golf, sailing, squash softball, tennis, touch football, tug-of-war and volleyball. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and snooker. The scoreboard in the background in photo .11P indicated an emphatic victory for the Army Survey Regiment.This is a set of 13 photographs of Flag Day, Army Survey Regiment versus the School of Military Survey, at Bendigo on the 10th of October 1986. This set of 30 photographs of the Army Survey Regiment’s Fortuna Villa and surrounding facilities was taken circa 1985. The photos feature much of Fortuna’s exterior and most of the out-buildings spread over the property’s fifteen acres of grounds. After Defence took possession of Fortuna in 1942, the Q-store and engineering workshops were added during the wartime period. Soldiers were accommodated in tents during WW2 for 20 years next to the parade ground before the construction of accommodation buildings in 1962. In 1990 most of the weatherboard buildings in the Q-store area were replaced. A climate-controlled building was also constructed to house a map library and digital data media. This photo set also includes the exterior of Air Survey Squadron’s Building 16 and two modular buildings -16A and 16B that were added in the early 1980s to accommodate map production and technical services.
