Digital photo, George L Coop, Redex trial on Whitehorse Road, Mont Albert, 1953, 1953
The Redex Reliability Trial 1953 -The first Redex round-Australia reliability trial covered of 6,500 miles (10,500 km), and had a first prize of £1,000. It attracted both amateur and professional drivers in a variety of cars. The route passed through Brisbane, Rockhampton, Townsville, Darwin, Alice Springs, Adelaide and Melbourne before returning to Sydney and attracted much public interest. At the time the idea of driving huge distances around the country in ordinary cars was novel and the logistics were challenging. In many parts of the country there simply wasn’t adequate accommodation or suitably located refuelling stops. The Shell Company facilitated the race by placing petrol dumps along the 5000 km route between Townsville and Adelaide. The race began at the Sydney Showground on 30 August when 192 cars left at three-minute intervals. Of the twenty top finalists, two thirds were sponsored. Ken Tubman and John Marshall won the trial in a Peugeot 203. A black & white photo taken in Whitehorse Road, Mont Albert during the 1953 Redex Trial as a Volkswagen is passing 688 Whitehorse Road on the extreme left. The VW appears to have advertising on its panels indicating it was a competitor in the trial. On the far side of the road is a Morris Minor with a hatted man sitting on the bonnet. The houses in the background are partly obcsured by large hedges.george coop, mont albert, volkswagen, morris minor, redex trial, whitehorse road -

Photograph - Image, Two teenagers at a restaurant
Two male teenagers sit at a table covered in a white tablecloth. One is being served by a waiter, who is placing potatoes on his plate from a silver tray, whilst the other sits with his plate complete with potato and other foodstuffs that also look a bit like potatoes in variety of ways. Two glasses sit before the teenagers, as does salt and pepper shakers and a small plate with what looks like half a boiled potato topped with slices of cucumber. In the background another waiter is walking past towards a man in a dark white and white shirt (only just visible). The room has wooden panelling and a beige concertina window, possibly concealing the kitchen behind. The wording under the picture reads "Lance and Darren experiencing silver service at a C.O.H.A.T restaurant". This could have been part of a dining experience between students who came to Burwood school and a local TAFE college.Digital image of two boys at a restaurant with a waiterrvib burwood school, education -

The land was bought in 1853 by John Smith and he built the house. The house was offered for sale in 1866 when George Barnacle bought it and named it 'Warwick Cottage' after his birth place. it was offered to short term tenants such as the surveyor Creed, Miss Boes a dressmaker and O'Doherty the Catholic school teacher. In 1874 Dr Rastrick was a tenant and in 1878 it was occupied by the grocer William Searle and his sister a dressmaker. Barnacle offered the cottage for sale in October 1885 advising that the iron roofed stone cottage , 4rooms, detached kitchen and outhouses had been previously occupied by W.C.Uncles and at that time William Muhleg Carpenter. It ultimately sold privately to Miss Beatty and she continued to rent it to tenants. James Kilbride was the tenant in 1887-88. The cottage was sold in 1888 to Isaac Smale. The house continued its tradition of housing dressmakers with Mrs Barby carrying on that profession in the 1940's,50's and 60's. Photograph, James Reid's Wheelwright and Blacksmith's Shop 1883
James Reid was born in Scotland near Glasgow and came to Victoria as a young man in 1854. Shortly after arriving he came to Bacchus Marsh where he lived until his death in 1902 at the age of 74 years. For most of these years he conducted a wheelwrights and coach builders business in Bacchus Marsh. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, wheelwrights and blacksmiths played an essential role in the functioning of the whole community. Before the industrialisation of manufacturing, wheels and other components of vehicles for transport, all metal objects, including farm implements, building requirements and domestic utensils were made by hand. As mechanisation of industry increased, the smith commonly performed the role of farrier in the times when horse power was pivotal to all aspects of society. Complementing this work, the forge was often allied with a wheelwright's shop. These premises also acted as a meeting place for the men of the town, where news was shared and friendships forged.Small sepia 'carte de viste' style unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Housed in the album, 'Photographs of Bacchus Marsh and District in 1883 by Stevenson and McNicoll'. An image depicting a wheelwright and blacksmith's shop, with a group of men, boys and a woman shown in front. Two men are wearing the work clothes of the blacksmith, including the split leather apron worn by farriers to enable them to work on the hooves of the horses needing shoeing. Two young boys are standing by the door. A portly gentleman in formal clothes stands before the shop. His proprietorial air suggests he was James Reid, the owner. The house shown at the rear was James Reid's residence. Two people, an elderly gentleman and a younger woman, are seated in a jinker on the road to the side of the shop. Photograph - Civic Leaders Wodonga 1876 - 1994
Wodonga Shire was created in 1876 when the colonial government agreed to ratepayers' petitions to have their part of the local government district severed from the Yackandandah Shire to form a new municipality. In March 1973 Wodonga was declared as the first Rural City in Australia. This was officially proclaimed by the Governor of Victoria, Sir Rohan Delacombe at and open-air ceremony in Hovell Street following a procession along High Street led by the Victorian Police Band. The first meeting of the held in the open air immediately after the proclamation. In 1994, the Jeff Kennett government restructured local government in Victoria. His reforms dissolved 210 councils and sacked 1600 elected councillors. Commissioners were appointed in their place. Wodonga’s Commissioners were Mel Reid, Des Kelly and Michael Hanson. Reforms introduced created 78 new councils through amalgamations. Democratically elected councillors returned to Wodonga in 1997, with Graham Crapp as Mayor. This item documents the leaders of local government in Wodonga since its inception in 1876 until Local Government reform in 1994.A photo collage representing Shire Presidents and Mayors of Wodonga, including a typed list of names and dates. Programme, Annual ANZAC Commemoration Ceremony for Students 1995, 1995
A circular sent to Victorian schools informing them of the 1995 annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students", held on 5th April 1995. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. The 6 pages outline the order of service of the ceremony, some background notes on the ANZAC Commemorations, a short history of the Shrine of Remembrance, a story of Legacy and a letter from the President of Melbourne Legacy. It mentions the ceremony is telecast on the ABC television channels. They mention is it a 'Circular to Victorian Colleges and Schools' so they were sent to school to publicise the events. There is a letter to the school Principal from the President of Legacy inviting the schools to attend or to listen to the telecast. Each ceremony was attended by the Governor of Victoria, in 1995 it was Sir Richard McGarvie. The photo was published in an issue of the Answer in May 1992 and the caption says, 'Junior Legatees Kathleen McGrath and Greg Sallee place a wreath at the eternal flame'.A record of a ceremony at the Shrine for school students in 1995.Printed brochure of the student Anzac ceremony with a photo of two junior Legatees at the Cenotaph, single page folded into 3. Photo shows, (L-R): Luke Bayley; Ray Henderson; Chris Robinson; Ann Henderson; Lesley Finedon, assessing successful stream side rehabilitation at Bev DeJong and Bob Dunnett's place during a paddock demonstration and tree planting field day, called 'Really Successful Tree Planting!' run by Wooragee Landcare on Sunday 20th June 2004. Maintaining and reforesting native trees, shrubs and grasses are really important for a variety of reasons, including creating native habitat and food for birds and other animals, shade, biodiversity, visual appeal, cooling, shade for urban areas, sequestering carbon and conservation among other considerations. The planting must be consistent with the particular needs of the environment, such as trees or shrubs which would naturally occur and are native to the area. Tree planting demonstrations such as this one run by the Landcare Group ensures that the projects are being managed consistently with an overarching commitment to land protection and management and the best methods for best outcomes are employed. This photograph is significant as it provides evidence of a project undertaken by the Wooragee Landcare Group to educate themselves and members of the public on successful techniques needed to plant and maintain trees for replanting in the Wooragee area. Gloss enamel painted paper collage, Louise Paramor, Boomtown, 2016
Louise Paramor says, “I just love colour and playing around with it, it makes me feel good. I get a kick out of harmonising colour in conjunction with form. I think if there was more finely tuned colour in the world it would be a better place. There exists a lot of untamed colour in the everyday and to me this is often creates a feeling that is the opposite of uplifting.” In this work, Paramor creates a utopian building from collaged pieces of paper, which have been painted in planes of coloured enamel. Often these collages become sculptures, for which Paramor is mainly known. Andy Gomez writes of Boomtown, “Louise Paramor invites us into her own fabricated domain, where colours are coherent and vivid, buildings are unique and non-conformist, where public sculpture exists for the sake of form, colour, line, and levity. There is an inherent optimism at work here, exalting the accomplishments and ingenuity of the urban sprawl and the enforced participation of a shared culture and experience that offers.” -

Geological specimen - Fossil Leaves
A fossil refers to any remains or traces of past life that are preserved in the rock. It could be remains of plants or animals. Fossil leaves are commonly found on different types of rocks. These fossils can go as far back as the Triassic Age just like the series of fossil plants collected at Denmark Hill, Ipswich in Queensland. Fossils leaves are formed when dead plants get buried by sediments like mud, sand, or volcanic ash. Often, it gets detached cleanly from stems along a special layer of weak cells, then twigs, and, less commonly, cones of conifers and fruits and seeds of flowering plants. Over time, the leaves or pieces of leaves get buried by more sediments and eventually gets 'lithified' or hardened into a rock. Erosions and mining can cause the rocks to break and reveal the fossils buried in it. Fossilisation frequently takes place at sites in the lowlands where deposits of clay, silt, sand are found. This is usually due to weathering and erosion of rocks. Fossil leaves can provide information about ancient Australia's way of living. It contributes to Victorian biodiversity records and its botanical collections. It also contributes information on the geographical profile of Victoria as fossilisation usually occur at estuaries and deltas of rivers, river flood plains, ponds and lakes. This specimen is part of a larger collection of geological and mineral specimens collected from around Australia (and some parts of the world) and donated to the Burke Museum between 1868-1880. A large percentage of these specimens were collected in Victoria as part of the Geological Survey of Victoria that begun in 1852 (in response to the Gold Rush) to study and map the geology of Victoria. Collecting geological specimens was an important part of mapping and understanding the scientific makeup of the earth. Many of these specimens were sent to research and collecting organisations across Australia, including the Burke Museum, to educate and encourage further study.Piece of light brown rock with fossilised leaves in shades of golden yellow and brown.Existing label: Fossil Leaves / Locality unknown / might be worth checking if this is Glossopteris, a Permian age plant. / C. Compass, Divers
Diver's underwater compass used by British Royal Navy clearance divers during World War ll. Originally issued to ex-RN demolition diver (frogman), PO Leslie Wade, service number RJX 162991 of the Landing Craft Obstacle Clearance Unit (LCOCU), 1939 to 1945. Wade participated in the 'Operation Overlord' D Day landing at 'Juno' Beach, Normandy, France on the 6th June, 1944, in the early hours of the morning prior to the Canadian Army task force landing. Wade was with the LCOCU team tasked with clearing anti landing craft obstacles which were destroyed by placing explosive demolition charges. note: at some stage during the day Wade was wounded by enemy mortar fire and successfully evacuated to England for treatment. It is a Digital Archive print with gold and silver leaf and glitter and varnish. "Upon entering a strange place, the visitor is disorientated. He looks for key markers that can act as signposts to help him find his way. These markers are taken from his past experiences, giving shape to his perceptions.’…’ Ferry was born in the seaside town of Blackpool and educated at London art colleges during the late 1970s at the height of British Punk. These early foundations continue to assert themselves in the mischievous and disruptive nature of his photomontage. He argues that early understandings of oneself, along with the characters and situations one encounters, shape our viewpoint. These act as familiar signposts that enable us to negotiate our understanding of the world. Employing what he refers to as a collage mentality, Ferry collides and layers fragments to explore his subjects.’ Writes Stephen Clarke on David Ferry’s work in ‘The Double Negative’.
