Our contemporary Judaica collection was developed through a series of exhibitions titled Australian Contemporary Design in Jewish Ceremony I, II and III. For each of the three exhibitions, contemporary artists and crafts-makers were invited to design new objects that could be used to perform the Jewish ceremonies and rituals that had been preserved and developed by Australia’s Jewish community over the last 200 years. This collection now comprises over sixty unique and distinctive objects made using very different methods of production, including tapestry, silver-smithing, carpentry, ceramics and glass-work. To celebrate Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year), Jews eat foods like honey cake and apple dipped in honey. Along with a special prayer, this is a way of asking God for a sweet and happy year ahead. Artist's statement: I chose to make these afikoman pouches even though they may not be familiar to or used by all Jewish families. In these little pouches, a small piece of matzah would be placed in the pouch and then hidden in the house for the children to find during the Passover meal. On finding it, a gift is given. The story of Passover and Judaism in general have been kept alive over the centuries. I wanted to honour the passing down of the Torah through the generations, and, in particular, the role of children in its transmission. I have used the Australian desert as a metaphor for the great wilderness crossed by the People of Israel. A recent trip to Broken Hill and beyond inspired me to work with the subtle colours and textures of that landscape and I have incorporated into the work found objects, stones and beads collected there. Text from card: 'On the night of 24th April 1918, the Australians made a daring and clever counter attack in the darkness, recaptured Villers-Bretonneux, stopped the German advance and saved Armiens. This, and the Battle of Hamei, were only a prelude to the smashing advance which commenced on 8th August.' Contains illustrations of 'Australians Advancing from Villers-Bretonneux, August 8th 1918' from an original painted by AIF War Artist Captain Will Longstaff; 'Capture of Hamei Village, July 14th 1918, by Australians assisted by a Detachment of Americans' by War Artist A Pearse. Both paintings were made for the Australian Comforts Fund. The Australian Comforts Fund was an umbrella organisation for voluntary bodies set up on 24 August 1916, after the outbreak of World War I. It was dissolved on 16 April 1920 but was re-established in 1940, during World War II and dissolved again in 1946. Card made in England by Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd, publishers to the King and Queen. Station Sign - Yea Yea Station Opened 16 November 1883 Closed 8 November 1978 Yea is a former railway station in Yea, Victoria, Australia. The tracks have been removed and the reserve has been turned into The Yea Railway Park consisting of the historic railway station and eleven acres of parkland. It has a picnic shelter, barbecue, toilets, playground, skatepark, walking track, community reserve and includes Rotary Park. The station building houses Blackthorn Textiles (a privately run craft shop). Also on the site are the former goods sheds which are available for hire for varied functions. The Yea Country Market is held in the park on the first Saturday of each month and local artists hold an exhibition and sale in the goods sheds each Easter. Photos of the opening ceremony at the Tatura Museum, in conjunction with 50th Anniversary, of the Temple Society in Australia. Sister Beatrice Moore nursed at Camp 3 during WW2 and was invited by Tatura and District Historical Society to officially open their new buildings and display on POW and Internment Camps, on 22 September 1991. Sia Fujitsu, the son of Jiroguma Fujitsu was born on 27 May 1926 in Yamaguchi-Ken, Japan. His trade is listed as Employee of Culture and his religion is Buddhist. He was captured at Tawao, North Borneo on 27th January, 1942 and was interned in Loveday South Australia until he was repatriated to Japan on 21st February, 1946. Kurt Winker was born in Germany in 1902 and was a survivor of the "Arandora Star".
