On 31 July 1948 a football match was played at the South Melbourne Cricket Ground between sides from Victoria and South Australia. The event was organized by the RSL Victorian Branch. The RSL Victorian Branch Football Association was originally formed in 1947 and was affiliated with the Victorian Football Union. The purpose of the Football Association was to provide organized football for Returned Servicemen. RSSILA Wangaratta Sub Branch Dinner held to celebrate the Centenary of Wangaratta in 1938. Dinner guests included the Chief Commissioner of Police and Mr Holland, State President. Other Centenary events included the unveilling of the King George V Memorial Gardens which were opened by Mr McEwan Minister of the Interior, representing the Prime Minister. John McEwen was born on 29 March 1900 at Chiltern in Victoria, to pharmacist David McEwen and Amy (Porter) McEwen. His mother died after the birth of their second child in 1901, and his father died in 1907. McEwen and his younger sister were raised by their grandmother, Ellen Porter, who ran a boarding house. They lived first at Wangaratta and then moved to Dandenong in 1912. Prior to the Second World War Tarakan Island was part of the Dutch East Indies and an important oil-producing centre. In early 1942 it was occupied by the Japanese. The primary objective for the Allied attack on Tarakan (code-named "Oboe One") was to secure and develop the island's airstrip so that it could be used to provide air cover for subsequent landings in Brunei, Labuan and Balikpapan. The secondary objective for the operation was to secure Tarakan's oilfields and bring them into operation as a source of oil for the Allied forces. As part of the 26th Brigade the 2/24 Battalion landed at Tarakan on May1 1945. The task of capturing Tarakan's airstrip was assigned to the 2/24th Battalion. The Battalion's initial attack on the airstrip on the night of 2 May was delayed when the Japanese set off large explosive charges, and the airstrip was not secured until 5 MayThe 2/24th Battalion was an infantry battalion of the Australian Army, which served during World War II .A unit of all-volunteers, it was formed in July 1940 from primarily Victorian volunteers and was known as "Wangaratta's Own" because of the time the battalion spent in the town during its formative period prior to deployment overseas. It served in North Africa in 1941–1942 as part of the 26th Brigade, which was assigned to the 7th Division, before being reassigned to the 9th Division. In early 1943, the battalion returned to Australia and later took part in campaigns against the Japanese in New Guinea in 1943–1944 and Borneo in 1945, before being disbanded in 1946. The 2/24th suffered the highest number of casualties of any 2nd AIF infantry battalion. The Unit was granted the Freedom of the City by the Rural City of Wangaratta in 1996 and one of the first, if not the first, to receive this type of honour. A section of four riflemen was the basic element of a Light Horse unit. In action when forced to dismount, three men formed the firing group while one man took the horses to cover.The 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) was raised in 1920 as part of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade, 2nd Cavalry Division, Citizen Military Forces, with Headquarters at Seymour and depots along the Goulburn Valley from Mansfield to Tocumwal in southern NSW. In December 1941, 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 20th Motor Regiment. In 1943 redesignated 20th Pioneer Battalion and deployed to Merauke, Dutch New Guinea. Mr James de Graaf in 1929 with his 1925 T FORD. James’ father Jacobus de Graaf arrived in Melbourne from Holland in 1853 and married Eliza Twite, aged 16 years. James married Caroline Kink in 1885 and came to live at 13 Charles Street, near Elgar Road soon after. James rode to and from work in Richmond until the train timetables were suitable for his work schedule. He then would put his bicycle in the guards van and from Richmond would still have to ride a distance. Eventually he worked in the timber trade in Box Hill. In the 1830’s, European pastoralists started moving south from NSW into the Alps. In 1836, cattle grazing began around Omeo and the runs spread out into the foothills. The higher country was used for summer grazing and huts were built for shelter and storage during stock mustering. The lure of gold brought many people to the Alps from around 1850 to 1900. Bushfires destroyed the forests around Melbourne in 1939 and the boom in house-building after World War II ked to increased demand for timber from the Alps. This resulted in the building of a network of roads which helped open up access to the Alps. The early 1940’s brought the first of many workers to the Alps for the planning and construction of the Hydro-Electric Scheme. These were the pioneers and early settlers of the Kiewa Valley and provided a wealth of characters and a tapestry of stories and adventures to be handed down to future generations.These 3 posters, which were most likely produced for promotional purposes provide a glimpse into the early lives of the pioneer families of the Kiewa Valley through pictures and verse. They show their lifestyle and outline the hardships they had to endure in living and working in the Alpine region. They also highlight the early arguments regarding grazing in the high country which would ultimately lead to the end of the long traditions of the high country cattle men. The World Alliance of Reforned Churches had declared the South African Dutch Reformed churches heretical because of their doctrinal advocacy of apartheid. Storey spoke about the situation in South Africa - "Speaking from his non-violence Christian viewpoint, he said that violence was counter-productive. 'When an organisation uses these methods it loses something of its moral case. I understand why people such as the ANC turn to those methods. I will never agree with them.' Booklet produced in 1940 for members of the 2nd AIF by the Australian Comforts Fund Victorian Division. The Keith Wingrove Trust conducts a competition among Australian artists, graphic designers and students for the production of Ex Libris Bookplates. The competition is called The Australian Bookplate Design Award. The purpose of the competition is to increase interest in and to attract publicity to the artistic value of bookplates. Although the competition is referred to as 'Australian' there is a category of award open to International artists. This bookplate was part of the 2013 Australian Bookplate Award. Wim Zwiers (b. 1922, Holland) Zwiers studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam from 1940 and graduated from there in 1944. Renowned as copper and wood engraver Zwiers became a teacher at an academy in Groningen. Zwiers has produced a few hundred bookplate. Around 1992 started to use the computer making ex-libris and other small graphics. Although he was not the first who started making computer exlibris, he surprised many by starting at age seventy. Two articles about the origin of the Last Post collected by Bill Rogers. One's source is possibly Sydney Legacy. It says the last post is derived from the old custom of beating Tattoo. This word comes from the Dutch phrase - doe den tap toe, meaning turn the taps of the taverns off. Then when bugle calls were introduced two posts were written. "First Post symbolises the inspection of the last inn in the town. It was then a simple step for the Last Post to become associated with Military Funerals. Played at funerals the Last Post is followed by the call Rouser, a later version of Reveille, which symbolises the awakening of a new life." The other has the words to the Last Post and a similar story but not as detailed. A photo of junior legatees in costume for an Annual Demonstration, the date is unknown. Costumes were reused in different years. These costumes include a beefeater, an English soldier with a bear skin hat, a soldier with a tin hat and a girl in a floral dress. The floral dress costume was used in a scene set in Holland with wind mills in other photos but this could be a different year. It is possible this was taken at a rehearsal by a newspaper and used in promoting the event. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. The Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to the late 1970's, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium. The gardens of Ovens District Hospital were laid out and planted by R H Jenkyns in 1874. Over 200 species of trees and shrubs were planted, including several large Himalayan Cedars (Cedrus deodora), a Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), rare Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris), Pencil Cedar (Juniperus virginiana), Bunya Bunya Pines (Araucaria bidwillii), a Purple-leaved Dutch Elm (Ulmus x hollandica 'Purpurascens'), American Ash (Fraxinus americana), Pinus radiata, and numerous Populus alba trees and suckers. The gardens were considered integral to the healing process, also including orchards and kitchen gardens. In the 1880s, tourists flocked to Beechworth as the area became recognised as a health resort and picturesque beauty spot. Although the hospital closed in 1940, and parts were subsequently demolished, the gardens remain and form part of the site's listing on the Victorian Heritage Register. This photograph is part of a collection of items held by the Burke Museum relating to Ovens District Hospital. This photograph shows Sam Lynn with his team of Clydesdales. Samuel James Lynn was born in 1865 in Coleraine, Northern Ireland. His father was James Lynn and his mother was Mary Jane Keith. Sam, as he was known, was the second of three brothers, his older brother being William and his younger brother was John Wilson Lynn. (info. Margaret Hollands) Samuel Lynn was a well-known Orbost pioneer. He owned much property throughout the district , bred Clydesdale horses and fattened about 600 cattle. He was in great demand as a judge of both cattle and horses at agricultural shows in Victoria and interstate. He was a shire councillor for 30 years and president several times. He took a great interest in the sporting clubs of the town and played cricket until late in life. He was goal umpire for the local football team for many years, judged for the Orbost Racing Club and was the first president of the Orbost Bowls Club. He was also a member of the first municipal band. Sam Lynn was a well-known Orbost pioneer. John Gartner was a fine printer and publisher, an author, a noted philatelist, and also collector of Australian banknotes and coins. He was born on 16 July 1914 and was largely self-educated, leaving school at fourteen for work following the death of his father. Gartner developed a strong interest in the history of typography and printing and was apprenticed at the Advocate where his father had been a linotype operator. Aged 17, Gartner bought a hand press and some fonts of type, and in 1937 acquired a platen press from which he set and printed his private press books, published under the imprint of The Hawthorn Press. Gartner had a strong collection of Australian bookplates. He also looked at the work of artists overseas and commissioned personal plates. He subsequently built an international collection with preference for artists who printed from wood. His initial searches were in Belgium and Holland.
