Scottish miller and immigrant, John Eadie established his water-driven flour mill on Jacksons Creek in Sunbury in 1861.To make of a sufficient water supply to operate the mill, he built a weir and a water-race to drive it. Some of these can be seen today. The machinery for the mill was bought from Scotland and transported here. The mill continued to operate until 1914. At that time the 20 ton metal wheel and the iron roofing removed to aid the war effort.This mill is one of a number that were built along the water courses in the Sunbury-Bulla area to process the wheat grown in the area.A non-digital black and white photograph in post card format of a an old bluestone mill building sited on the bank of a watercourse in a deep valley with bare hills in the background. The photo is of the Sunbury State School No. 1002, which replaced an earlier building. The Federation style red-brick school was built in 1911 and was officially opened on 2nd May 1912. An extra room was added in 1945 to accommodate increased enrolment. In 1999 the school closed at the Stawell Street site and the students relocated to the former and refurbished bluestone Industrial School in Jacksons Hill. The former red-brick school building is now part of the Sunbury Community Health Centre complex.Many former and present-day residents in Sunbury have attended this school over the years.A black and white photograph of a small school building. The former mill and weir shown in the photograph were sited on the banks of Jacksons Creek downstream from the town of Sunbury. John Eadie, a Scottish immigrant established the water-driven flour mill on the banks of the creek after he arrived in the colony in 1866. The mill continued operating until the outbreak of World War 1 when the metal wheel and iron roofing were taken and used for the war effort. The hill in the back ground with the trees and buildings was the site of the former Sunbury Asylum. The building was the residence of the engineer who was responsible of managing the early electric supply that was installed in Sunbury in 1909. The town's power supply put an end to gas lighting that had been used and homes had the benefit of having electricity connected to their homes. In 1926 the State Electricity Commission took over supplying electrical power to Sunbury. George and Anne Evans settled in Sunbury in 1836 after migrating to Van Diemens Land from Plymouth in 1825. He took upland along the Jacksons Creek and built his Emu Bottom Homestead. He married Anne, who was forty years younger than him on 11 May 1843 and they had six children. He and his wife Anne are buried in Melbourne General Cemetery in Compartment 'H'.George died on 26 August 1876 and Anne died on 12 January 1893. George Evans was a one of the first Europeans to take up land in the the area that was originally known as Buttlejork ( Batterjork) in the area now known as Sunbury. The photo shows three Bendigo California Combination single truck cars at Charing Cross, looking southwest with the Alexandria Fountain in the centre. Trams 5 and 14 are in the view along with another behind them. The Bendigo electric tram system commenced operations in 1903 and given the appearance of the roadways and tram tracks, the photo was taken soon after opening. Louise Amy Breaks, also known as Lulu, died on the 8 May 1943. An error on the plaque mentions 1945 which was likeky erected later. In her obituary published on the Williamstown Chronicle, Friday 14 May 1943, page 1: A well-known and very highly respected resident of this city, Miss Louise Amy (Lulu) Breaks, of 4 Jackson Court, Ferguson St., died on Saturday morning, after a brief Illness. Deceased was born .ocally and was the eldest daughter of the late Engineer Commander James L. Breaks, R.N., and Alice Breaks. Deceased was a very prominent member and worker of Holy Trinity Church and actively identified with every caritable movement in this City. She leaves a sister, Miss Maude Breaks, to mourn her loss. The funeral took place on Monday afternioon, leaving Holy Trinity Church after a service conducted by the Rev. J. H. Raverty, assisted by the Revs. S. P. H. Martin and Oliver. The large congregation in the Church, lengthy cortege, and very large number of floral tributes received testified to the esteem in which deceased was held. Ernest W. Jackson. had charge of the funeral arrangements, and the Rev. J. H: Raverty officiated at the cemetery.Louise Breaks and her family were active members of the Mission. Her father James Lennox Breaks, aged 22 years, sailed from England on the Cerberus on her maiden voyage, and was associated with the ship for 34 years until he retired. Joy MacDuff was a greatly loved teacher at the Junior School where she worked from 1973-1987. She resigned to return to live in Scotland. This prize was established in 1990 in her honour, and awarded to the music student demonstrating enthusiasm, endeavour and enjoyment. The prize was awarded until 2010. The property in the photograph is the winery building at Goonawarra Vineyard, which is situated on the east side of Jacksons Creek and on the north side of Macedon in Sunbury. The winery and homestead were established in 1858 by James Goodall Francis, who received a crown grant of land in Sunbury. From 1865 to the 1920s, the vineyard produced white wine grapes. James Goodall Francis died ion 1884 and the property was brought by M.P.Synott who ran merino sheep on the property. It wasn't until the early 1980s that Goonawarra reverted to be a vineyard after the property had been in the hands of a variety of owners. The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as a regiment of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps on 1 May 1948 with Headquarters in Melbourne and squadrons in Sale, Benalla/Wangaratta and Albury. In 1955 Regimental Headquarters moved to Wangaratta and a second squadron was located at Albury. The Sale squadron transferred to 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse. In 1977 8/13 VMR Regiment was reduced to an independent squadron A Squadron 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles and in 1991 was linked with 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse forming the VMR Squadron of that regiment.
