Nissen Lodge was built by 1953 at Falls Creek. The first lodge at Falls Creek was built in 1947 by SECV staff members. By the 1954 Ski Season, Falls Creek Alpine Village had 10 club lodges, plus a ski tow house and a commercial lodge that both provided skier accommodation. Several other club lodges were under construction. The Nissen Alpine Club operated a rope tow with a 240m rise in altitude..Ski lessons were also available. Re: Tony and Skippy St Elmo Beveridge See KVHS 1113 By 1953, the SECV was issuing entry permits for private cars used by skiers with bookings in a Falls Creek lodge.The Nissen Ski Lodge was one of the early ski lodges at Falls Creek. Toni St Elmo Beveridge was involved in the early development of skiing at Falls Creek including assisting with the building of the early lodges, and establishing the Nissen Ski School. See KVHS 1113. The book was later used for visiors to the KVHS museum located in the old Tawonga South School.Deep red, bound, thick cardboard book with gold outline of Australia and 'Visitors" on the centre front. Many pages each with a column for Date, Name in Full and Address in Full. Written in ink and pencil both sides of each page with the first date being 14 - 6 - 1953 to 17th September 1960. Entries follow from 1985 to 1994 when the closure of the display at the old South Tawonga Primary School is noted by the KVHS Secretary. Falls Creek Historical SocietyJournal - Schuss Vol. 26. No 2 March - April 1960
Schuss was advertised as Victoria’s Official Ski Journal It was issued monthly from 1935 to 1961 except during the war when summer issues covered two months. This continued after the war, but it averaged 10 issues annually over its 25 year life. Schuss was published by the Ski Club of Victoria which had a membership of 38 Ski Clubs and demanded to be recognised as the prime authority on skiing in the state. The other 30 ski clubs with 85% of the members disagreed and the politics of skiing became heated. These clubs formed the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs with their own journal, Ski Horizon. With the establishment of the Victorian Ski Association, Ski-Horizon published its last issue in Nov - Dec. 1955 and the role of the official journal was fully taken over by “Schuss”. This item is significant because it contains stories, images and information documenting the development of the ski facilities at Falls Creek.The journal includes stories and events chronicling developments in Victoria and internationally. The cover features the symbol of the 1960 Winter Olympics and the names of the Australian Team members - Richard (Dick) Walpole, Bill Day, Christine Davy, Peter Brockhoff and Hal Nerdal. In a report on page 57 Dick Walpole reports on the lack of coverage of Olympic Nordic events. On page 69 Fred Griffith gave an update on preparations for the National Championships. Photo taken on the day of the Wattle's removal from the River Yarra by two mobile cranes, the vessel is suspended above the river. A very significant moment in the life of the Wattle as this was the first day of the major restoration project that continues from 2009 through 2012 aiming to finish in mid 2013. Prior to this restoration project there was a long lead up to find funding and resources to restore the Wattle and ensure that Wattle was not scrapped. The majority of this preparation and restoration work was and continues to be completed by volunteers.Colour photograph in a gilded wooden frame. S.T. Regular and annual minutes of the East Ringwood Progress Association from 2 May 1960 to 20 November 1961. The Nov 1961 meeting discussed the longevity of the Association and formed a sub-Committee to investigate. The Association was having extreme difficulty in attracting members and the valuable work, that it did in the past, had generally been completed, with the Council taking over any outstanding work. The final meeting was convened 20 months later and it was passed that the East Ringwood Progress Association be wound up and disbanded. The accrued funds would given to the East Ringwood Children's Library (see cheque butt) and the other assets to the East Ringwood Community Centre. -

Ernest Lance Young was born 24 March 1915 in Surrey Hills, the son of Ernest Augustus Young and Ruby Nichell Whitty. He married Beryl Mair in 1939 and died on 5 October 1999 at Mont Albert. Electoral rolls record him as a manufacturer. His address after marriage was 11 York Street, Mont Albert. Beryl Mair (1916-1976) was the daughter of David Miller Mair and Lily Vipond Deakin. She had an older brother Geoffrey David (1913) and younger sisters Gwynneth (1918), Isobel Lillian (1921) and Shirley Inez (1928).This is part of a large donation of material relating to the Deakin, Mair and Young families, all of whom had connections with Surrey Hills / Mont Albert. The donor is the daughter of Ernest Lance and Beryl Young.Post card photograph with a stippled surface which has been cut in two and stuck back together but without the top RH corner section. It shows a well-dressed couple and a young girl. The woman and girl are in summer dresses and wearing hats.Multiple inscriptions on both sections. "Young" in lead pencil. These books contain reports of the Supreme Court of Victoria in 1960 and 1961. They came from the Ardlie family, members of which have been associated with Warrnambool and legal affairs since the early 1850s. John Ardlie came to Warrnambool in 1852 as the Clerk of Courts and his son William Ardlie was a prominent lawyer in Warrnambool for over 60 years. If it is this William Ardlie’s stamp in these volumes then it was used after his death. The signature is of John Ardlie, also a lawyer in Warrnambool and Port Fairy in the later decades of the 20th century.These volumes are of interest as they are connected to members of the Ardlie family, prominent lawyers and community members in Warrnambool in the 19th and 20th centuries.These are two volumes of law reports of the Supreme Court of Victoria– hard cover books with dark green covers and spines with red and gold bands and gold print.
