Sir Dallas Brooks at a Legacy Bowls tournament. Names of the legatee with him is not known. The trophy awarded to the winner was named after Sir Dallas Brooks who was a patron of Melbourne Legacy when he was Governor of Victoria (1949-1963). It shows a close relationship between Legacy and the Governor of Victoria. Melbourne Legacy held regular bowls tournaments for Legatees. Some events were as a fundraiser for Legacy and well as a social event for legatees. The date is estimated to be the 1960s as it was with other slides from that period. A Legacy ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance on 22 April 1988. One of the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" events, held just prior to ANZAC Day. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. The photos include Legatees lining up to greet the official party, which included President Alf Argent and the Governor of Victoria, Dr J Davis McCaughey, AC (see 01784). Also the Governor inspecting a group of cadets. Many Legatees attend and one photo shows Legatee Tom Robinson with the school children. The event included a fly past of 4 aircraft and speeches by the president, the Governor and two school children (see 01785). A bugler in red uniform performed (see 01787). There was a boys choir and girls choir either side of the Shrine steps. Other school children sat on the steps with wreaths to be laid in the inner sanctuary (see 01788). Two Junior Legatees laid wreaths at the Cenotaph on behalf of Junior Legatees (see 01789). The school ceremony was broadcast on ABC TV and Radio for many years. This arch was built as a ceremonial arch. Plaque citation on the arch reads " Erected in 1884 by James Mackintosh, owner of local sawmill, for the visit of the Governor Sir H B Loch. This is the only known example in Victoria of a 19th century ceremonial arch, a type usually intended to be temporary.This arch is on the Historical Buildings register no.1092. It is the only known example of a temporary ceremonial arch still in existence in Victoria. This was the "Order of service" for the inaugural unveiling of the WW2 Commando Cairn at Tidal River, Victoria. Lt General Sir Edmund Herring, Lt Governor of Victoria addressed the assembly, 2 Commando Company soldiers were the Guard of Honour, and the 4/19 PWLH Regt band played. This was the first official memorial to WW2 Commandos, located at Wilsons Promontory where the Commando units were first trained. A memorial ceremony is held in November each year since 1964. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the discovery of gold in Bendigo the Jubilee Exhibition ran from November 1901 to May 1902. It was opened on the 13th November 1901 by the Governor General Lord Hopetoun. Also in attendance was the Prime Minister Edmund Barton. Although the back of the photo says "Planting of Lone Pine tree" it is believed that it is wrong and this photo belongs with the Olive Tree of Peace photos (see 00478 and 00479). 1973 was the Golden Jubilee year of Legacy. The names on the front of the photo mentions Sir Edmund Herring who was Lieutenant General of Victoria for 27 years, which is deputy to the Governor, so he was probably acting on behalf of the Governor at the ceremony. Herring was a renowned Australian senior officer in World War II. In September 1942 he became commander of New Guinea Force. He also served in World War I, earning the Distinguished Service Order and the Military Cross.
