These two pencils have been marked with names to serve as advertising items and souvenirs. One is from Zanos’ Elite Café of 80 Liebig Street. This café operated in the 1950s and 60s. The other is from the Jaycee 20th Victorian Zone Conference of 1965 held in Warrnambool. The Warrnambool Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) was established in the early 1950s to advance business and encourage civic leadership in its members. The Briquette Company was a sponsor of the 1965 Conference.These pencils are of minor interest as examples of advertising techniques used in the second half of the 20th century. These plans have been drawn by Steve Hester for the Warrnambool City Council to illustrate the allotments in Warrnambool concerned with the subdivisions of 1989. The streets have not been named but there is an indication of the area with the identification of known buildings (eg Hospital) and the plan numbers of each allotment is clearly marked. These numbers corresponded to the plan numbers registered in card files and ledgers in the Warrnambool City Council offices. The scale of the plans was 1 to 5000. These plans are of considerable interest because they show Warrnambool street subdivisions of 1989 in illustrative form. They show how information was collated in the late 1980s before the widespread use of computer digital means to describe and store information.These are five hand-drawn sheets showing plans of sub-divisions in Warrnambool streets in 1989 (Warrnambool City Council material). The plans are multi-coloured (crayons) and show allotments with plan numbers. The first plan has much of the material torn off but the location is known to be in the Russells Creek area. Some of the green tape around the edges is missing. Plans two to five are almost intact and are bound with green tape. This 20th century business machine was used by the firm of D.H.Wood Motors of 169 Koroit Street Warrnambool. This firm advertised that it sold mainly Peugeot and Studebaker cars and Hillman and Humber cars and commercial trucks. This machine has local provenance as it came from the 20th century business of D.H.Wood Motors. It also has some historical interest as an example of a business or office machine used in the early to mid 20th century before the general use of computers. This is a grey rectangular-shaped metal box with rounded edges. The box has four metal studs on the base to keep the box stable. The box has a hinged section for the insertion of the paper dockets and a turning mechanism for removing the dockets, one at a time from a slot at the top of the machine. The dockets have a white (customer's) copy and a pink duplicate copy for the business to file. Two of the dockets have been removed from the machine to show the contents. The number of dockets in the machine is unknown. The metal surface of the machine is rubbed and rusty and the paper is stained. The Ballarat College of Advanced Education was formed by the merging of the State College of Victoria at Ballarat (SCVB) and the Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education (BIAE). The parent body of BIAE was the Ballarat School of Mines, founded in 1870 to train personnel for mining activities. The first awards at diploma level were made in 1896 in the branches of English, Metallurgy and Geology. Over the years the range of courses broadened to include Art, Physics, Business Studies, Humanities and Librarianship. The tertiary division of the School of Mines was relocated to Mount Helen in 1970. The SCVB was established in 1925 by the Education Department as the Ballarat Teachers' College. It was one of two provincial teachers' colleges to be established. The first courses were concerned with primary teaching and manual arts but later the subject areas of Physical Education, Environmental Sciences, Music, Art and Craft became major strengths. The merger took place in 1976 and by 1980 all staff were located at the Mount Helen Campus. In 1988 Student accomdation included: * Mount Helen - 290 individual furnished study/bedrooms arranged in units of ten to fourten rooms. $64.05 including 4 evening meals * Gillies Street - 56 individaul study/bedrooms in two blocks each containing kitchen/dining room areas, a common room, as well as bathroom areas.
