Robin Boyd was involved in creating several television programmes, as author and presenter. 'Design in Australia' was an eight part series for the ABC television series 'University of the Air'. (Items D184-D193 contain all the manuscripts except part six titled 'Communications'.) In Part 1, Boyd discusses the general framework of the series in which the relationship between an Australian identity and a homogenising cultural force reinforced by technology and mass production is explored. Boyd points to the uniqueness of Australia's natural landscapes and asks a series of pointed questions, implying that Australian design does not reflect or match up to its context. In Boyd's view, Australia now produces world-class designers, but lacks a world-class design culture, leading the best professionals to leave for the US or UK. Robin Boyd developed a close friendship with the founder of the Bauhaus in Weimar Germany, Walter Gropius, who had moved to the USA in the 1930s. Through this connection, Boyd was invited to be the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Bemis Professor at the School in the North American academic year 1956-7. Robin and Patricia Boyd, with their youngest daughter Suzy, were based in Cambridge, Massachusetts for the year. Boyd gave some lectures at MIT and he was also invited to give lectures at many other universities, allowing him to travel widely within the USA, especially on the East Coast. This gave him the opportunity to meet architects like Frank Lloyd Wright, Eero Saarinen, Paul Rudolph and many others, and visit the offices of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, and places like Taliesin and the General Motors Technical Center Detroit. Stages in the construction of one of the two Birney Safety Cars, imported from the J G Brill Company of Philadelphia in kit form in 1924, and assembled in the area formerly occupied by the buses. In the background of Item 9237 is the trailer purchased from the North Melbourne Electric Tramway Company in 1924. Its number in the order in which Geelong cars were acquired was 13 (the Birneys were nos. 14 and 15) and it was eventually converted to a track scrubber car in 1926. It never carried the number 13 but was advertised for sale as such at the closure of the tramways in 1956. Tram line up at the depot with the same personnel (Item 9235), in formal poses in each photo. They are attired in the MESCo uniform that suggests that the photographs were taken before the State Electricity Commission of Victoria takeover on 1 September 1930. The ex-Melbourne Meadowbank cars 27 and 28 first ran in Geelong in 1928. Date of the photos would therefore be restricted to 1928-30, but it is possible that they were taken close to or on the handover date as a final record.
