Information from the donor by email gives: Norma Pryde is identified as the girl in the second row on the far right. Her parents Norman & Hilda Pryde lived at 50 Broughton Road, Surrey Hills. The home was named 'Strathaven' after the town in Scotland where Norman's father came from. Norman & Hilda were married in 1923. Norma was born in 1924. Norman worked for Moran & Cato so the family moved around a lot for his work and is thought to have rented out the house from time to time. During some time in the 1920s they were listed on electoral rolls in Nyah West and then in 1942 they were listed in Hamilton. When the war ended they came back to Melbourne and in the late 1940s built a home at Blackburn. Norma married John Cleak in 1947 in Camberwell. BENDIGO. Golden Square State school choir won three of the principal shields at the recent Bendigo musical and elocutionary competitions. The choir's victories were celebrated by a social at which the prizes were presented. In presenting the trophies, Mr. R. S. V. Cocking, president of the competitions committee, referred to the popularity of the children's choir contests, which the musical adjudicator, .Mr, James, had characterised as the most important sections on the programme. Of the whole of the competitions held throughout Australia none had a school section to equal that at Bendigo. The head master of the school, Mr. A. M. Parratt,. who conducted the choirs, was presented with a grandfather's clock and photographs of the choirs, by the residents of Golden Square. Two male teenagers sit at a table covered in a white tablecloth. One is being served by a waiter, who is placing potatoes on his plate from a silver tray, whilst the other sits with his plate complete with potato and other foodstuffs that also look a bit like potatoes in variety of ways. Two glasses sit before the teenagers, as does salt and pepper shakers and a small plate with what looks like half a boiled potato topped with slices of cucumber. In the background another waiter is walking past towards a man in a dark white and white shirt (only just visible). The room has wooden panelling and a beige concertina window, possibly concealing the kitchen behind. The wording under the picture reads "Lance and Darren experiencing silver service at a C.O.H.A.T restaurant". He resigned this position to open the school which operated until 1905 with additional premises at 12 Vincent Street. The main building fronted 219-233 Union Road. The school had 40 boarders as well as day boys. Courses included algebra, euclid, history, typewriting, shorthand and drill. In the 1930s, Nethercourt Private Hospital took over the site. Later it became St Jude's Hospital. Land in front of the building was sub-divided off in the 1970s. The building is still extant as a private dwelling with York Street, Surrey Hills as the address. This is one of 3 photos donated by Susan Hobbs, whose grandfather Rev. George Edward Downton is thought to have been a student at the college. George E. Downton was born in Avoca in 1885. He was later a missionary in New Guinea and Secretary to the Australian Board of Missions in Adelaide. He died in 1926 or 1927. This photo is one of two that were originally in the Box Hill Historical Society collection. They were transferred to us in 2024. The third photo could not be located.
