Vehicle - Workboat ex Wyuna
In 1974, this 18 foot (5.5 meter) diesel-powered workboat was one of the last boats built to operate from the pilot cutter Wyuna. These boats were used to transfer pilots from the Wyuna to the ship being serviced or vice versa. Until 1946 they were propelled by two oars then simplex two-stroke petrol engines were fitted followed by diesel engines. The Pilot Service Shipwrights built the boats in a shed which stood on the site of the present Pilot Station, Tobin Drive, North of Shortland Bluff. The design is based on a Gig and was developed by the Pilots as suitable for the severe conditions at the entrance to Port Phillip. To understand how these boats were used view the film "Through The Rip" on the video in the Exhibition Hall.Close association with QueenscliffTimber Workboat used to transfer pilots between Wyuna and ship requiring servicepilot service, wyuna, workboat, boat buiding, port phillip sea piots -

Photograph - Photograph - Black and White, Bella Guerin and son, 1895, 1895
Bella Guerin was born on 23 April 1858, at Williamstown, Victoria. She studied at home to matriculate in 1878, and then gained her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Melbourne in 1883, becoming the first woman to graduate from an Australian university; she followed this with a Master of Arts in 1885. She taught at Loreto Convent, Ballarat, urging the establishment of higher education scholarships to produce ‘a band of noble thoughtful women as a powerful influence for good’. She married an elderly poet, Henry Halloran, who died shortly afterwards leaving her with a young son, Henry. She returned to teaching and from the mid-1890s frequented suffragist circles. A second marriage in 1909 to George D’Arcie Lavender was also short lived. Bella Guerin was vice-president of the Women’s Political Association from 1912–14 and co-authored Vida Goldstein’s 1913 Senate election pamphlet. However, dual membership of the non-party feminist camp and the Labor Party was prohibited by the latter in 1914, so from that date she campaigned for the Victorian Socialist Party and the Women’s Socialist League, speaking out on a range of controversial issues. She led the Labor Women’s Anti-Conscription Fellowship during the 1916 referendum campaign. In 1918, as vice-president of the Labor Party’s Women’s Central Organising Committee, she caused controversy by describing Labor women as ‘performing poodles and packhorses’ who were used for fundraising but under-represented in policy decisions—and she was right. Bella died in Adelaide on 26 July 1923 of cirrhosis of the liver and is remembered for her idealism, her oratory skills and her commitment to equity for women. Bottle, R F Kennedy & Son, c. 1900
This bottle was made by Whitall Tatum and Co. of U.S.A. It was used in the pharmacy business of R. F. Kennedy and Co. of Warrnambool and it has the well-known Kennedy symbol of a lighthouse on a rocky face on a coastline with ships in the distance. Richard Frank Kennedy (1826-1903) was born in England and came to Warrnambool in the early 1880s where he quickly established a large pharmacy business in Timor Street. In 1891 he built new premises with the shop described as one of the most elegant and best-stocked chemist’s shops in Victoria. He was a retail, wholesale and manufacturing chemist. Kennedy was active in community affairs in Warrnambool and was a foundation member of the Warrnambool Bowls Club, being the first Vice-President and an early President. The pharmacy business continued after Kennedy’s death, trading as ‘R.F. Kennedy and Co’. Richard Frank Kennedy was one of the most significant businessmen in Warrnambool in the late 19th century. The products of his chemist shop and factory were distributed all over Victoria and beyond. This bottle is a very good example of a Kennedy chemist bottle. This is a clear glass bottle used in the pharmacy of R. F. Kennedy and Co of Warrnambool. The bottle has a rectangular-shaped body with rounded edges, a circular shaped neck and a moulded top that extends over the neck. The top has a piece missing and there is no stopper. The chemist’s logo and name are embossed on the side of the bottle and the maker’s name is on the base of the bottle. ‘R.F.Kennedy & Co, Chemists Warrnambool’ ‘W.T. & Co, U.S.A.’ ‘Pat. Bottle, Australian Glass Manufacturers, R F Kennedy & Co, Early 20th century
This bottle comes from the chemist’s business in Timor Street Warrnambool of R.F.Kennedy & Co. Richard Frank Kennedy came to Warrnambool in 1880 and established a retail, wholesale and manufacturing business in Timor Street. The business was described in the 1904 ‘Cyclopedia of Victoria’ as the largest and best-appointed pharmacy in Victoria. Kennedy was prominent in community affairs in Warrnambool, being a Town Councillor, a Justice of the Peace, and on the committees of the Warrnambool Hospital and the Mechanics Institute and Art Gallery. He was the first Vice-President and fourth President of the Warrnambool Bowls Club. After Kennedy’s death in 1903 the pharmacy business continued as a company and this bottle comes from that time. The Kennedy chemist bottles were well-known for their lighthouse logo (Warrnambool having two operating lighthouses during the company’s time, with these still operating today). This bottle is significant as an example of a chemist’s bottle from R.F. Kennedy & Co. This pharmacy was a dominant business in Timor Street, Warrnambool for over 40 years. This is a small clear glass bottle with a rectangular-shaped body with rounded sides, a small neck and a moulded open top. The stopper is missing. The chemist’s name and a lighthouse logo are etched into the side of the bottle. ‘R.F. Kennedy & Co Chemists Warrnambool’ ‘M297 AGM’ r.f. kennedy, warrnambool chemist, history of warrnambool -

Functional object - Lance bucket
This lance bucket could be attached to the stirrup iron quickly via the two straps and was for temporary issue to a troop for ceremonial occasions such as a vice regal escort, or Govt house guard when lances were carried. It differs from a much more common bucket which fitted over the top if the stirrup iron. An elliptical hole allowed the stirrup leather to pass through thus securing it to the stirrup more securely than the two straps alone. Lance buckets were used by the Squadron Sergeant Major and Squadron Quarter Master Sergeant of each Light Horse Squadron as they were the only ones to carry lances to assist them when they performed the duty of markers that the troops lined up on when on parade, or forming squadron-in-line, as they did for the charge at Beersheba. Unusual piece of light horse saddlery. Leather lance bucket with two adjustable straps to attach it to a stirrup.military, horse, stirrup, light horse, lance -

Painting - Artwork, Black Day, 2012
'Black Day' was part of a series of paintings drawn from a larger body of work produced over a four-year period exploring the 'harsher side' of the Australian landscape and the aftermath of extreme weatehr events and climatic occurences of fire, flood, drough and wind. Although loosely based on real places and events, the works are essentially fictional with ideas gleaned from popular media - telveision, Internet, magazines and newspapers. While my return to abstraction and landcape painting from figuration has been relatively recent, the natural environment has always been informed by my artistic practice regardless of subject matter, and has had always informed my artistic practice regardless of subject matter, and has had a long-standing influence on the aesthetics, the compositional structre and imagery in my work. The flattening of the picture plane and the prominent horizontal and vertical marks in my composition are informed by a response to both natural and man-made interventions in the land - the muted and restricted colour palette echoing my response to extrems in environmental changes, particulalry of cental and western ditrict Victoria. Created in the studio environment, I consisder this boxy of work as being imaginative 'conglomerates' which reflect varying perspectives and textural interpretrations of the land - defining and expresssing my response to particular and significant climatic, environmental events and my personal experiances.
