The Bairnsdale-Orbost railway was opened in 1916 to serve the agricultural and timber industry. Because of the decline in traffic and heavy operating costs, the line was finally closed in August, 1987. A rail motor which was used from 1924 – 1935, had the appearance of a motor bus on wheels. In October 1926 the rail motor service introduced from Bairnsdale to Orbost in May 1924 was in danger of being abandoned. The Victorian Railways Commissioners stated that patronage had not been satisfactory despite a one and a half hours reduction in the travel time.This item is associated with the history of the Orbost-Bairnsdale railway line and therefore reflects the role that the rail line played in the social and economic history of Orbost.A small cardboard first class train ticket - buff coloured with black print. Colour slide of VR class tram 53, route 30, westbound in La Trobe St on the bypass built to enable the construction of the Melbourne Central or Museum station between Dec 1973 and 1978 - see reference. The concrete looks relatively new in the photograph. The tram was originally built by the Victorian Railways for their St Kilda Brighton tramway in 1942. "Surburban tickets of the Victorian Railways - H K Atkinson" published 1991 notes on page 123 "Edmondson tickets issued from trams were held in small pouches in the conductor's bag and were punched with a special date punch (ie. 1 to 31) to denote the day of issue." It is thought that the month would have been used as well, otherwise people could recycle tickets for each day of the month. No punch for these yet seen by the Museum. Used by Victorian Railways at stations on the Orbost-Bairnsdale line. The Bairnsdale-Orbost railway was opened in 1916 to serve the agricultural and timber industry. Because of the decline in traffic and heavy operating costs, the line was finally closed in August, 1987. Orbost Railway Station was opened on Monday 10 April 1916 as the terminus of the Orbost railway line, and closed in 1987. The station was located on the west side of the Snowy River despite the town of Orbost being on the east side of the river, in order to save on the costs of a bridge over the river, which at the time had highly variable levels. In 1902 a ballast siding was opened 4 km south of Gellibrand to provide materials for track construction. A spur siding with a capacity for six trucks was cut into the side of a slope. Above this was erected a loading bin and chute. The stone proved to be of durable quality so the siding continued after 1902 for periodic track re-ballasting works. The points were set for the main line and spiked shut when the siding was not in use. By the mid-1920s the Victorian Railways found it more economic to use ballast from Penshurst, so the siding was closed by 1925 and the rails lifted.B/W. These plates were manufactured for use by Victorian Railways. The stylised monogram of "VR" and wings was introduced for the locomotive "The Spirit of Progress", which completed its first journey on 23 November 1937. A badge of this design was also worn by the crew of "The Spirit" and the monogram was also emblazoned on the front of the locomotive. An article published in The Argus of 17 November 1937, in reference to the tremendous power of the locomotive said "The great V.R. monogram flanked with wings spread for flight enhances the illusion." Report by the Victorian Parliamentary Public Works Committee on "The Plenty Road, Preston, Tramway Extension Inquiry" - 1967. The inquiry examined the MMTB's proposal to extend the East Preston line 0.7miles or 1.3km. The Committee took evidence from the MMTB, bus operators, the Victorian Railways, residents, La Trobe University, Preston City Council and others. The Committee recommended against the proposal. The report lists those members of Parliament involved. The line was subsequently extended by 1.2 kilometres from Tyler Street to Boldrewood Parade during 1983 and subsequently to Bundoora. Victorian Railways Rail & Tram Monthly Periodical book of tickets with conditions of travel on the inside covers. See reference page 124/125 and Figure 6-35. Book of 60 tickets (No. 49) for Feb. 1922 from North Road to St Kilda. The traveller also had to hold a monthly rail ticket for St Kilda station to Melbourne. The conductor would tear out each ticket and hand half one portion back to the traveller. Has been stamped "cancelled".
