The family attended the outdoor ceremony and have slides of Robin Boyd in full academic dress. The Doctor of Letters Certificate (item D490) is also part of the Walsh Street Archive. Zelman Cowen was Vice Chancellor at University of New England 1967-1970. Robin Boyd designed the Zelman Cowen House at 34 Yarravale Rd in Kew in 1959. Bendigo Teacher's College, along with the Ballarat Teacher's College were the first non-metropolitan teacher colleges. The Bendigo College was established in 1926 and operated out of the Long Gully Primary School. DUring the depression, from 1930 to 1945 the college closed because of the economic climate. The college reopened in 1945 in temporary accommodation adjacent to the Camp Hill Primary School. In 1959 the college moved into purpose built premises in Osbourne St., Flora Hill where it remained until closing in 1973."Pheonix Celebrites for 1956". The photograph was taken towards the ESE from Peterborough headland. It reproduces an original landscape view of the FALLS OF HALLADALE shipwreck which occurred at 3 am on 14 November 1908 (and confirms that the vessel was on an ENE tack at the time of the collision). The image includes three groups of formally dressed Edwardian sightseers on the cliff top and an adjacent rock ledge. Subsequent versions of this well-known image are usually cropped to present a striking portrait view, emphasising the vertical lines of the ship’s masts and sails, and excluding the groups of sightseers on the right hand of the original image. The small girl in the foreground and the loose sail on the foremast are common to both the landscape and edited portrait versions of this memorable scene. The photograph was taken at an early stage of the ship’s final days, somewhere between the date of her grounding in mid-November 1908 and early January 1909 (when salvagers began dynamiting her iron masts so they could get to the valuable cargo still in her holds). Firmly wedged between two parts of the reef and with all of her square-rigged sails fully set, the FALLS OF HALLADALE provided a spectacle for many miles along the coast. Over these weeks she attracted hundreds of sightseers, and photographers, before the pounding seas finally broke her weakened hull and she disappeared back into deeper waters. The iron-hulled, four-masted barque, the Falls of Halladale, was a bulk carrier of general cargo. She left New York in August 1908 on her way to Melbourne and Sydney. In her hold, along with 56,763 tiles of unusual beautiful green American slates (roofing tiles), 5,673 coils of barbed wire, 600 stoves, 500 sewing machines, 6500 gallons of oil, 14400 gallons of benzene, and many other manufactured items, were 117 cases of crockery and glassware. Three months later and close to her destination, a navigational error caused the Falls of Halladale to be wrecked on a reef off the Peterborough headland at 3 am on the morning of the 15th of November, 1908. The captain and 29 crew members all survived, but her valuable cargo was largely lost, despite two salvage attempts in 1908-09 and 1910. ABOUT THE ‘FALLS OF HALLADALE’ (1886 - 1908) Built: in1886 by Russell & Co., Greenock shipyards, River Clyde, Scotland, UK. The company was founded in 1870 (or 1873) as a partnership between Joseph Russell (1834-1917), Anderson Rodger and William Todd Lithgow. During the period 1882-92 Russell & Co., they standardised designs, which sped up their building process so much that they were able to build 271 ships over that time. In 1886 they introduced a 3000 ton class of sailing vessel with auxiliary engines and brace halyard winches. In 1890 they broke the world output record. Owner: Falls Line, Wright, Breakenridge & Co, 111 Union Street, Glasgow, Scotland. Configuration: Four masted sailing ship; iron-hulled barque; iron masts, wire rigging, fore & aft lifting bridges. Size: Length 83.87m x Breadth 12.6m x Depth 7.23m, Gross tonnage 2085 ton Wrecked: the night of 14th November 1908, Curdies Inlet, Peterborough south west Victoria Crew: 29The shipwreck of the FALLS OF HALLADALE is of state significance: Victorian Heritage Register No. S255. The Falls of Halladale shipwreck is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register (No. S255). She was one of the last ships to sail the Trade Routes. The Pipe Bridge at Greensborough is a significant and highly visible part of the system. It was constructed to carry the wrought iron aqueduct pipes over the Plenty River. The use of wrought iron meant the pipes were 75% lighter than cast iron, with the bridge construction reflecting this innovation. Photograph of the Maroondah Aqueduct pipe bridge at Greensborough. The Pipe Bridge is 210 feet long, divided into 4 spans. The main girders are light lattice 11 feet deep and 11 ft 4 inches apart. The bridge carried two wrought iron tubular mains, 53 inches in diameter, supported at intervals by cross girders and chairs, placed between the main girders. The bridge is carried on braced cast-iron columns, 18 inches in diameter, set on concrete foundations, with a clear headway of 20 feet above the Plenty River. The Africa Star was granted for operational service in North Africa from the date of the entry of Italy into the war on 10 June 1940, up to the date of the cessation of operations against the enemy in North Africa on 12 May 1943. The Africa Star may also be awarded for operational service as a member of the Australian Defence Force during the Syrian Campaign in the period from 8 June 1941 to 11 July 1941. This medal is awarded for a minimum of one days operational service in North Africa, west of the Suez Canal between 10 June 1940 and 12 May 1943 and in Syria between 8 June 1941 and 11 July 1941. Clasps Three clasps were issued for the Africa Star: 8 th Army 1 st Army North Africa 1942-43 Only one clasp is worn and when the ribbon is worn alone a ribbon emblem, ‘8', ‘1' or silver rosette as appropriate is worn to denote the award of a clasp. The Medal The Africa Star is a six–pointed star of yellow copper zinc alloy. The obverse has a central design of the Royal and Imperial cypher, surmounted by a crown. The cypher is surrounded by a circlet containing the words ‘The Africa Star'. Stars issued to Australian personnel have recipient names engraved on the plain reverse. The Ribbon The Africa Star ribbon colours represent the desert and the service of the Armies, Naval Forces, Merchant Navy and the Air Forces. This collection of items belonged to Emma Eliza Jane Watson's (bPhillips) son and daughter-in-law, John Richard and Edith Emma Watson (b Yung). Emma married Thomas William Watson at St Paul's Anglican Church , 11/11/1865.They lived in Sebastapol, Ballarat North and lastly at "Gracedale" Yendon - a small farm. They had 10 children and also brought up three grandhildren. .7 Emma Eliza Jane Phillips was born on 25th April 1844 in Barrabool (Geelong), the daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Anne Phillips (b Goodenough). Sometime in the 1850"s after the death of Richard and the breakup of her marriage to Anthony Beck, Elizabeth moves to Ballarat with her children. The eldest boy Richard William Phillips would have been in his late teens. Elizabeth died on 4th August 1858 (aged 42?) before any of her children married. Emma married Thomas Watson in Ballarat. .1 Black memorial card with gold ink for Henrietta Tierney who was the wife of Daniel Tierney of the Victorian Police. The newsletter from August 1955. It featured photos of the Legacy staff, including Miss Dorrie Vines the Matron of Stanhope. It summarises her life before joining Stanhope on 11 November 1946. She had served with distinction overseas during World War 2 as a Major with the Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps. At the beginning of 1940 she went to the Middle East and served as Senior Sister of No.1 Casualty Clearing Station and shortly afterwards was appointed Sister-in-charge of the No.3 Casualty Clearing Station. She returned to Australian in 1943 and was appointed Matron of a hospital in Alice Springs and in 1944 she again left Australia for New Guinea as Matron of the 2/11 Australian General Hospital. For her war service she was awarded the medal of an Associate of the Royal Red Cross in 1943 and was also mentioned in despatches. The Pentland Hills Estate property shown in this auction plan was put up for sale in 1904. It was a deceased estate sale. The property had been owned by Peter Grant who died in 1899. Peter Grant had worked and farmed in the Myrniong area for many years and had also been a Councillor on the Bacchus Marsh Shire for a number of terms. A property sales report in the Express newspaper recorded that the land for sale comprised 500 acres of the old Pentland Hills Estate. It was subdivided into three lots, all of which were sold at good prices. Lot l, 212 acres was sold to Messrs Thomas and Robert Lidgett of Myrniong, at £11/15/ per acre, lot 2, 200 acres, to Mr David Robertson, of Bacchus Marsh, at £9 17/0 per acre, and lot 3, 38 acres, was sold to Mr James Norton, jun at £11 per acre. A single page paper map showing a portions of land available for sale from the Pentland Hills Estate near Bacchus Marsh.The name of the seller, Mrs Grant, can seen handwritten on this map and the buyers of the three portions for sale, Lidgett lot 1, Robertson lot 2 and Morton lot 3. Parts of the text are missing along the edges due to tearing or excessive trimming of the edges. The map is pasted into a bound volume containing 76 maps or plans in total. A one page typed transcript of an article on the opening of East Loddon House, dated 15/05/1925, for the Limbless Soldiers’ Association, detailing the opening ceremony and the terms of the lease of the house. The inaugural meeting of the Ballarat Mathematical Association was held at St Patrick's College on 12 July 1967, in the presence of visitors Solway Love and the Australian Broadcasting Commission. The Ballarat organisation was a newly formed branch of the Mathematical Association of Victoria. The first committee of the Ballarat Branch were Miss I.H. Moore, (President) D. Scoltock (secretary), Brother Stanley, J.W. Netherway, D. Bremner, Sister Agnes (St Martin's in the Pines), Miss I. Tabaco (Ballarat High School) and Mother Michelle. The second meeting was held on 03 September 1967 and included a talk by Clive Keating, Inspector of Schools and President of the Mathematical Association of Victoria. The next guest speaker was Mr McLaren who spoke on Patterns in Mathematics forms I to IV.A harcovered ledger with leather spine containing minutes of the Ballarat Mathematical Association. Camp Westlake was built by Collingwood Technical School in 1967 and was officially opened on 22 September 1968. The camp was built by staff and students of the school with finance from various school sections and from materials donated by interested people and firms. It is named after Mr. F.R.Westlake and Mrs. Westlake who were staunch workers for the school. (From J.F.Barberis}Booklet of 15 pages with gold cover, A4 sized. Title: Camp Westlake Collingwood Technical School: an experience in country life at Buxton North East Victoria (62 miles)' written by Principal J.F. Barberis (undated but possibly around 1970-1971).
