Dr George James Scantlebury (1860-1923) was a medical practitioner in Linton in the late 1880s. While practising there he married the local postmistress, Catherine Millington Baynes. Dr Scantlebury was the father of Dr Vera Scantlebury (later Dr Vera Scantlebury Brown). Vera Scantlebury was born at Linton in August 1889. The Scantlebury family moved to Cheltenham later that year.Original sepia photograph, head and shoulders portrait of a man with a moustache, who is wearing a suit with a white pocket handkerchief. Photograph has been mounted on brown card. The horse bridle was owned by Heather May (Piper) who participated in many regional shows throughout her years. It is unclear how Heather acquired the bridle from W. Cattlin but 'she was generally interested in good riders and horses and saw the unique opportunity to acquire it'. (Steven May, Heather's son, email 2.4.25). The bridle was originally owned by W. Cattlin and it was used in 1913 at the Bendigo Show in a riding event. W. Cattlin was involved in many coursing events in the early 1900's. W. Cattlin is mentioned in a Bendigo Advertiser article 6th October, 1904, when he was competing at the Rochester Show. Leather bridle with metal bit and fine basket weave material reins. Demonstrates the early days of the Electric Supply Co of Victoria tram's in Ballarat, the use of cross bench or toast rack trams and the intersection of Grenville, Bridge and Sturt Sts Ballarat.Sepia toned photograph of ESCo crossbench car No. 19, at Sturt and Grenville Sts. with the Bucks Head Hotel in the background and Cowdell Tonner and Ellis drapers store on the corner of Bridge and Grenville St. The tram has the destination of Convent/Gardens. Printed colour postcard of the intersection of Sturt St. looking west from the southeast corner of Lydiard St. In the bottom left-hand corner is the number "300479" and the initials "JV"? within a circle. In the view are Crockers and the Art Gallery Association buildings. The later became the SEC Ballarat city offices. Image possibly taken c1912 as the trams appear to have driver's windows. Car featured in photo is No. 17. Note on the position of the rear lifeguard area of the tram is the word "Summerscales". This is a slide made from a post card which was issued some time after 1905. It depicts William Ferrier, the hero of the wreck of the La Bella which was wrecked near the breakwater in Warrnambool in November 1905 . The La Bella was bringing timber from New Zealand to Warrnambool when a huge wave struck the ship and she was dumped onto a submerged reef 100 metres from the breakwater. Because of the heavy seas the life boat was unable to rescue the seamen. William Ferrier, a South Warrnambool fisherman rowed out in his dinghy to the La Bella. He was able to rescue two of the five survivors, one of whom was the Captain..The loss of life was seven. The slide and the post card commemorate Ferrier's bravery..This slide is of interest as a memento of the best known shipwreck in Lady Bay, Warrnambool.This is a multi coloured slide of a man holding an oar.He is wearing a hat and a jacket with his shirt tucked into his trousers.
