Image of the newly opened Mentone Picture Theatre located on Point Nepean Road in Mentone. Local picture theatres abounded in the in the suburbs of Kingston from the 1920s through to the late 1950s. The New Mentone Picture Theatre was dreamt up and developed by Albert Lydford who along with other promoters, formed a company that provided the finance for the erection of a large cinema right at the junction of Balcombe Road and Point Nepean Road. The New Mentone Picture Theatre operated in competition with a council owned facility on Brindisi Street and within three years of opening, the council theatre was closed. The New Mentone Theatre flourished until the late 1950s. It offered three changes of program each week. Two movies screened on Mondays and Tuesdays. On Wednesday a new bill went on for just one night, and then the main feature of the week, a movie the likes of Casablanca, was shown from Thursday through to Saturday. During its heyday there were full houses almost weekly. Saturday night shows were often booked out in advance and some families had permanent bookings at weekends. Locals treated the place as a centre of social activity, a venue for an enjoyable night out that did not involve great expense or long travel times. This was a ticket for admission to a Ceilidh held at the Warrnambool R.S.L in 2011 run by the Warrnambool & District Pipes & Drums. A Ceilidh is a celebration of Scottish Music, dance and other entertainments. The Warrnambool Pipe Band was established in 1906 to popularise Scottish music and foster a taste for bag pipe music. It appears the Band was in recess from 1916 to 1935 when it was re-formed. The Mt Beauty Drama Group held concerts/ pantomimes at the Mt Beauty Community Centre. It was a valuable social outlet for the members because at that time the only entertainment in Mount Beauty was the pictures on a Saturday night. It was also an alternative to playing sport for some. It was formed in 1958 and expanded to include 20 ladies and 8 men. It ceased in the 1970s. Ref. "Below Bogong - A History of Mount Beauty" Chapter 8, Pages 252-254.The Drama Club performed and entertained the Mt Beauty community during their leisure time during the 1950s and 1960s. It was an alternative to sport and was before tv was available. The building comprised a Council Chamber on the ground floor, and upstairs a large hall with a stage, this room was used for meetings, balls, concerts and other entertainments. This building was replaced with a single-storey building in 1939. Formerly New Bath & Criterion, built in 1856. New Bath demolished in the 1860s. A new hotel was built in 1878 and altered in 1921, when it changed hands and an entertainment venue was incorporated into the former exclusively residential building. These cello strings belonged to Edith Jacobs (nee Larwill) who was prominent in music circles in Queensland before her marriage to Henry Jacobs, a Warrnanbool Estate Agent and Auctioneer during the 1940s and 50s. Edith Jacobs featured in many concerts and musical entertainments in Warrnambool during the middle years of the 20th century. Her son, Frank Jacobs was a prominent businessman in Warrnambool in the 70s, 80s and 90s and the wallet was either made by him or for him. These items are of some significance as they belonged to Edith Jacobs, a musician who was prominent in the Warrnambool musical scene in Warrnambool in the 1940s and 50s.This is a light brown leather wallet, hand made with two fringed areas, one on the top covering. There is some machine stitching and some hand stitching (repairs)The wallet is lined with cream-coloured silk and the back of the wallet has an etching of an emu. Flower shows or Horticultural exhibitions were a popular form of entertainment and scientific pastime in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and were widely reported on and followed. In 1956 the School Fair was officially opened by the Mayoress Mrs L. T. Hodgson, who was introduced by president of the Parents' Association Mr G. Bromley.
