Moved to Wangaratta in 1977 when her husband was transferred here. Was Secretary of the 'ladies auxiliary' (later called the classed as the brigade auxiliary) form 1994 - 1995. -

Image of burial site of Sgt Albert Robert WILLS born 16.11.1917 at Bendigo -VX 5275 He enlisted in 1939 embarked on HMT 'Ettrick" on 14/4/1940 after basic training at Puckapunyal. Disembarked in Egypt on 18/5/1940 and saw action at Bardia, Greece and Syria. Spent time in Lebanon and Ceylon before returning to Australia on 4/8/1942. On 13/10/42 disembarked at Milne Bay New Guinea and took part in the battle for Wau securing the airstrip and surrounding area after heavy fighting. Between 6-9 Feb 2/5 Bn C and D companies supported by A company spearheaded the attack engaged and defeated the enemy thus ending the battle of Wau Sgt WILLS was one of 28 men killed in action in the Crystal Creek area on 7/2/1943 and is buried at Lae War Cemetery. The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. Education kit - Miniature Doll Collection, Nursing Through the Ages
Fourteen Miniature Models of Nurses from Primitive Era to 1980's. They were Dean Nancy Long's idea and she had them made. They were used for "Careers" information when visiting High Schools. In 1972 when the uniforms changed from traditional to more modern trend they created interest for prospective trainee nurses. Each has a frame and a name tag in Roman script Collection of fourteen miniature Dolls. This ammunition bag was used by Harry Mitchell (son of Lindsay Mitchell) at the Bendigo Rifle Club in 1959, the bag was designed to hold 303 riffle bullets used in target shooting or could hold 7 cartridges for a shotgun. The Gladstone bag was very popular in the 1940/50 era, it fitted on the handlebars of a bicycle and it was used by footballers and sportsmen. A couple bottles of beer would fit comfortably in the bag and was.used to take beer home after the hotels closed at 6pm. These two articles were donated by Lindsay Mitchell to the Numurkah Historical Society. The Sunbeam Mixmaster belonged by Marjory Welch, Nana of Margaret Mitchell and would have been used in late 1930 and during 1940's. It was painted and used by Linda Mitchell, (great great grand daughter) when at universitv in 1987 White Sunbeam Mixmaster was purchased by Margaret Mitchell 1965. lt was her first mixmaster after she was married in 1964 The bread bins. Mervyn 'Banjo' Harris (born 4/3/1914) was the eldest son of Walter 'Bob' and Zillah Harris of Bendigo. He enlisted in the C.M.F. 8th L.H. February 1937. No V22764. He enlisted in the A.I.F. 7th January 1941 when the 8th light horse disbanded. He was then posted to he 143 P.O.W. camp Murchison. He was made a Sgt. at Geelong.Paper Certificate with Australian military forces logo and some slight ageing evident. Reads: Australian Military forces Certificate of Discharge certificate no. 66757 This is to certify that v22764 Sgt Mervyn Sylvester Walter Harris- 6 Aust. Aux. A recording done in 1967 of some legatees with the intention it might be used for an official history of Legacy. The handwritten label implies it was from Bendigo Legacy. Names mention are Legatee Bunty Lawrence at Group Conference in 1967 (about 40 mins), and Legatees Neil Ferguson, Frank M?? and Fred Percival. Unknown Newspaper clip '' Talented Bendigonian. Miss Sadie E. Russell Free place at University. The article includes a photo and states that Miss Russell came from California Gully and was a grand-daughter of Mr. and Mrs. WH Wallis of Smalley Street. She completed her high school course in 1935 and began teaching at Elmore, at the time the article was written was to leave Bendigo to take up a place at the University of Melbourne to complete a BA and MA, Dip Ed.
