William Ching and his wife Mary migrated from Cornwall to Victoria in 1853. They lived at Buninyong and Geelong before buying farm land at Linton/Happy Valley. The Ching farm was known as 'Ophir Farm'. William Ching died 1917 at Linton age 89. His wife Mary Ching died 1894 age 64 at Linton. William, Mary, and their children Francis William Ching, Mary Ann Ching, and Godiva Marion Ching are all buried at Linton cemetery. Mary Elizabeth Yeoman was born in England and married Edwin Ball in 1861. They migrated to Victoria in 1866 and were living in Linton by 1868. In Linton Edwin Ball and his sons established a blacksmith's business. Nellie Gray, born in Ballarat in 1885, was a daughter of Thomas Gray and Ellen Gray, nee Hodge. She was a granddaughter of Linton miner William Hodge. Nellie was noted for her singing voice, and sang at concerts around Australia, and overseas. Nellie was involved in Linton events and activities throughout her life (her grandparents William and Mary Hodge lived at Linton until their deaths in 1905 – see Hodge family file.) She often sang at church services and other events at Linton, e.g. she sang at the Old Lintonians' Association 2nd reunion in November 1914 - an evening entertainment at the Parish Hall. After WW2 Nellie retired to live at LInton. She died in Ballarat in 1976. It is understood that they lived in Sydney until John Poultney died in 1902, after which Mary Ann returned to Linton with her three daughters, Annie, Nell, and Lillian. William Todd was the son of William and Sarah Todd who settled in Linton around 1855. He is believed to have been born at Linton's Diggings. His son William Joseph Todd (known as Billy or Bill) was born at Linton in 1882 and worked as a mechanic and chauffeur, mostly in Melbourne. This bridge was built in the 1880s. By the 1980s it was in a dilapidated condition and was replaced. The old bridge was further damaged by storms and flooding in November 2010 and January 2011. (The newer bridge was completely washed away when the Springdallah Creek flooded in January 2011.)
