Advises that this follows an agreement between the Union and the PTC. Thought to be the first time that trams operated without Conductors following the big dispute. Printed sheet onto quarto size paper (faded to a brown yellow), titled "Problem Check Sheet - W class" outlining check list to find and rectify faults on W class tramcars. Was located on one of the windows of the driver train room, had an adhesive back - placed on to the white backing paper. Gives solutions for various problems, motors, tram won't start, compressor, changing light fuses, controller locked, bent fingers, insulated tram and damaged pole. Photocopy of a newspaper report in The Age, 9-9-1998, titled "Trams safety report 'a joke'", written by Lyall Johnson, Transport Reporter, about a report made by consultants for the PTC about the safety of the drivers cab in one-man trams. Notes the consultants did not inspect the tramcars themselves. Quotes Union Secretary Lou DiGregorio, PTC Spokesman Russell Coffey. The Malvern depot was refusing to drive the trams. Report had been prepared by R2A Risk and Reliability Associates Pty Ltd. Commissioned by the PTC. Newspaper Clipping - set of three clippings adhered to both sides of a sheet of ruled quarto paper with punched holes on the left hand side - various newspapers. .1 - "Tram Lines" - full page - from Melbourne University newspaper - Farrago - Friday April 11 -1969 - Titled "Tram Lines" with a photograph and story of MMTB Driver Cyril Tucker, Kew Depot, written by John Steed. Cyril joined the MMTB in 1922. Gives Cyril's thoughts on being a Trammie, notes the issue of the "scabs" - Tom Pesteranovich and Brooker (see Reg Item 2561). Has two photos and a cartoon sketch of the front of a tram. .2 - "Let's get rid of trams" - Letter to the Herald 11/4/1969 - written by David Crowther - Beaumaris - about trams cluttering the streets - got rid of even in Brisbane. Has a photograph of a tram stuck in traffic in Toorak Road. .3 - "Brisbane Trams Farewell" - Herald - 14/4/`969 - notes closure of Brisbane tram system. Gave the conditions, accommodation for up to a year, standards, working conditions, rates of pay, leave, retiring and death gratuities, sport, benefits, becoming a driver, employment, shifts, types of shifts, promotion, wages and conditions. Has a number of photographs of Melbourne, St Kilda Road, Collins St and a photo of a Doncaster bus in a very rural area of Melbourne. Photograph - Black and White - Tram Y1 610, Early 1930s
Photo shows the first build of the upgraded Y class design classified Y1 Class 610. Four of these Trams were built in the MMTB Preston Workshops in 1930, 610 to 613. There was one solitary Y Class tram 469. They were built with the intention of evaluating one-man operation. Due to their higher cost and Union resentment, the MMTB resorted to the proven W Class tram design. All Y and Y1 classes were withdrawn from regular passenger service in 1965 and transferred to the Driver training school at Hawthorn Depot. All cars are preserved in various museums in Australia.
