Tom Marks (1857-1939) was a founding member of the Association for the Advancement of the Blind and president in 1900 and 1935-1937. For centenary celebrations of the Association, portraits were painted of past presidents and photographs gathered in preparation of this. Griffiths established his butchering business during 1858, with just a small cash outlay, a canvas tent and a lot of courage. the business slowly grew and he opened a shop in Williamson Street in 1865. Gideon Nicol (1836-1908) was a seaman who came to Warrnambool in 1858. In 1865 he selected land at Mount Warrnambool . He was one of the founders of the Farnham Cheese and Butter Factory and the Garvoc Cheese and Butter Factory and was a Shire Councillor from 1879 to 1906. These items will be useful to include in the Gideon Nicol file.These are scans of two pages from a book and an illuminated manuscript. This gown was worn by Ellen Harvey Cundy (1857--1939) on her marriage to Thomas Davenport Wood on January 23, 1878. It was the first marriage at St. Paul's Church of England, Clyde Street, Myrtleford. Fawns's Brewery, near Oak Street, Golden Square. ( James Lerk, Nov. 1999). As early as 1858 George Mackay recorded in the Annals that James Fawns aged 35 years was in the brewery business in Golden Square. James Fawns (1824-21/9/1891) was born in Kincardshire, Scotland and came to Australia in February 1853 on the "South Seas". In 1858 he came to Bendigo and entered into a partnership with George Elliott as brewers in Golden Square. After this partnership was dissolved in 1862, James continued the business alone. James married Helen McFarlane McAllen in 1860. Following his death, James' 3rd son Benjamin Ellison Fawns carried on the business before becoming a pastoralist in Deniliquin by 1893.Sepia coloured photo. Blind Creek was located between the Abbotsford Convent and what is now the Collins Bridge in Studley Park. In an 1858 map of East Collingwood by Clement Hodgkinson, in the State Library of Victoria, one can see how the creek was originally a significant landmark in Collingwood; remaining vacant land until a barrel drain enclosed it. The area was later filled in, surveyed and developed. The position where Blind Creek entered the Yarra was in the immediate vicinity of Hodgson’s Punt, which had linked Kew to the other side of the Yarra from 1839.
