The badge design The League’s badge represents a readiness at all times to render service to Queen and country and to former comrades. It can’t be purchased and may only be worn by those who have served their country. The shield design is symbolic of the protection provided to those who wear it. Within the badge, red represents the blood ties of war that exist between comrades; white stands for the purity of the motives in joining the league – to render service without personal gain or ambition; and blue indicates a willingness to serve a comrade anywhere under the blue sky. The wattle represents Australia, with the leek, the rose, the thistle and the shamrock standing for Wales, England, Scotland and Ireland respectively.The collection of badges,medallion,issue diary and photograph shows what a soldier who served in WW1, received.It is good that this collection is still intact. This badge was produced in 1935 either as a sale item or a presentation item in connection with the Jubilee Spring Fair at the Anglican Christ Church in Warrnambool. Christ Church in Henna Street was designed by Nathaniel Billing and opened in 1856 with the northern portion of the nave added in 1860. The square tower, designed by Andrew Kerr, was added in 1882. Christ Church today still holds an annual Spring flower festival.This badge is of interest as a memento of a function held at the Anglican Christ Church in Warrnambool over 80 years ago.This is a circular metal badge with a painted white background with a blue edging, a coloured British Flag and blue printing. R .Sharp was a well known Ringwood resident and orchardist.Blue and gold metal medal hung from a ribbon of blue with white stripes. Portable candleholders were commonly in use in Australian homes in the 1800s. Candles were very expensive in Australia and often were not available in stores. However, after 1850 the price of candles was reduced and they became readily available throughout Australia. Candleholders were popular as they protected furniture from hot wax. The dish around the candle stem collected the hot wax that could be reused later. When carrying the candleholder, the dish also protected the hand from the hot wax. This one was used by Helena Warren of Newmerella.The candle-holder is an example of an item commonly used before electric light came to the area.A white enameled candleholder which is a hollowed round, white, saucer shape edged in dark blue. The South and Port Melbourne Thistle Club (later The South and Port Melbourne Thistle Society) held their first annual meeting at the Temperance Hall, Napier Street, South Melbourne on Monday 22 Aug 1899. They held regular concerts and balls and generally celebrated all things Scottish. They had a male Pipe Band and during the First World War when many men were serving in the military they formed a Ladies Pipe Band. The Thistle Cricket Club played in the Scottish Cricket Competition around the time of, and after, the First World War.Small blue & white edged badge with 'SOUTH & PORT MELB' on the blue edge and 'THISTLE C.C.' on the white edge.
