Humberstone's Royal Hotel was a substantial 2-storey building on the corner of Canterbury and Broughton Road. The hotel was built in 1887 to replace an older hotel (Delany's Hotel) built further east in 1856. It was de-licensed in 1921 after a "Local Option Poll" and became Tower House Day & Boarding School under Miss Marion Beetson from 1922 until 1932. It was demolished in 1932. There were 25 students in the 1920's, mostly boarders from outside Surrey Hills and all primary school students. The school room was detached from the main building and there was 6 acres of playing area. The old bar was the business office, the girls' dormitory the old dining room. Marion Beetson was the teacher, Mary Beetson managed the household. Their father was an Indian Army officer. The younger children wore a school blazer with the T.H.C. badge on the pocket. Miss Susan Kelsall visited to give piano lessons and Prof. Kelsall taught French. Miss Marion Beetson died in Castlemaine on 8 February 1952. The local photograph shows the original footbridge across the Merri River near its mouth, the Viaduct road and the Warrnambool Breakwater with the Titan crane on it. The breakwater's construction was completed in 1890, the year this photograph was taken. The Viaduct has since been filled in to prevent water from passing through the pylons, and the footbridge has been replaced. The postcard has a personal message written on the back to a Dr Scott from May. The photograph is locally significant for recording the completion of the Warrnambool Breakwater, for showing the original design of the Viaduct and for a clear view of the original footbridge across the Merri River. It is also of significance for being used by a female to send a greeting from Warrnambool to a doctor. Marlo was once a very busy port. Goods needed by the early settlers were carted by sea-going vessels to Marlo. At the Marlo wharf goods were unloaded from the large vessels onto barges and towed by paddle steamers to Orbost. The Tawonga Store was a general store in the Upper Kiewa Valley providing for a farming community. This store which had a variety of items was the main store for many of the farming families who would travel on horse and cart to make weekly trips to the store for supplies. This ledger was used by the owner of Tawonga Store to keep a record of items sold and to whom. George Potter owned the Tawonga Store before 1920. Whit Potter, George's son, worked with his father for many years. Attached to this ledger is a sheaf of letters which were sent to the Potter's, which are relevant to the day to day operation of a General Store. The ledger gives a comprehensive list of what type of items the residents of the Kiewa Valley purchased during this period, thus has great historical significance. It is well provenanced and very good interpretive capacity. Green linen covered cardboard cover. Brown (leather look) paper spine. Inside cover is red and green marbled paper. Ann Ruston died 1868, aged 75 years. She was the mother of Peter Ruston who came to Australia in 1850. He worked as a carter, carting flour from the mill on the Plenty River near Janefield to the Greensborough area. He married Martha Roberts in 1858. The Andrew Ross Museum organised Kangaroo Ground’s 1851 – 1996 Furphy week-end which was held Friday May 17th to Sunday 19th May 1996. In commemoration of the district's links with the Furphy family, a plaque was unveiled at the front entry of the Andrew Ross Museum by Roger Furphy of the Furphy Foundary, Shepparton. The event was preceded by an address by author, Dr John Barnes of La Trobe University, the country’s leading authority on the novelist, Joseph Furphy. The date was seen as significant since it marked the 145th anniversary of the death of Judith, the young sister of John and Joseph Furphy, who died soon after commencing school in Kangaroo Ground 1851. Andrew Ross chronicled the event in his reminiscences. The most distinctive product to carry the Furphy brand would certainly be the water cart. The presence of the cart in military camps in Australia and overseas during the First World War led to the name of Furphy becoming an indelible part of our language and idiom. It was used extensively in Europe and the Middle East to carry water to the troops and the drivers of the carts were notorious sources of information and gossip for the men as they moved from camp to camp. As could be expected, not all their news was reliable and so it was that the word Furphy rapidly became a synonym for suspect information or rumour. Horse and cart with driver Mr. F. Thomson and passenger cross a wooden bridge with log tree trunk base construction supported by timber rails over Johnstone's Creek amidst the Kinglake forest. The bridge was built for the timber tramline. There was also a logging district in the Pheasant Creek area just outside the Shire of Eltham. This book of memoirs provides a personal insight to the history of Maffra in the first half of the 20th century.A 296 pp spiral bound book with a green cover titled Like It Or lump It. It was written by Stan Hunt and tells of his and his family's experience of the 1939 fire in which he was caught as a child as well as the sugar beet industry in Maffra where he worked at as a teenager.
