Duncan Cameron, the second son of Ewen and Marion Cameron, was born in 1856 at Ashby and died at Linton in 1936. He worked as a stonemason, and was an active member of the Old Lintonians' Association. Court House Hotel. Patrick St. Stawell. Thomas Crerar built this hotel opposite the Court House in Patrick Street in 1879. The first license was from that year until 1884 by Elizabeth Cowman. The final license was held by Margery Bonetia Phillips from 1903 to 1909. It was closed by the Licensing Board 3/5/1909. This is a photograph of Dennis Varigos wearing his Air Force uniform. At the start of the WW2 Dennis enlisted in the Australian Army and then transferred to the Royal Australian Airforce where he served from 1940 – 1946. Dennis was one of the many Australian born Greeks to enlist in the Australian armed forces during World War 2. Speros Kostopoulos first arrived in Australia in 1900, returning to Greece to serve in the 1912-1913 Balkan wars and then returning to Australia. He was a foundation member of the IPS in 1916, the same year he married Ivy Peak. In partnership with his brother Othon Kostopulos he ran successful cafe businesses in the CBD and St Kilda. He later purchased a poultry farm in what is now the suburb of Chadstone. When the farm was eventually subdivided, Ithaca Court was named after Speros' birthplace and Ivydene Court (incorrectly listed as Ipydene) after his wife Ivy. The Flinders Street extension building opened for use in 1917 after relocating from Australia Wharf. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. This image shows the house occupied by Thomas Mason and his family in 1883. The man in the centre of the image holding the reins of the horse is possibly Thomas Mason. One of the two women seated in the buggy is possibly his wife Catherine Mason (nee Whelan). This house was built by grazier George Palmer Hall around 1846-1848 north of what is now Lerderderg Street, Bacchus Marsh, at a point close to the Lerderderg RIver. The house and the accompanying farm of over 5,000 hectares was leased by George Ball to George Hobler in the late 1840s and early 1850s. During this time George Hobler's daughter Emily married Henry Bacchus the son of Captain William Bacchus. By 1865 Thomas Mason had purchased the property. Mason named the property Riverton. After his death in the 1890s the property was owned by a number of different people. The house was still in use until 1999 but since this time has been unoccupied and its condition has significantly deteriorated.This image is significant because it depicts one of the earliest houses built in the town of Bacchus Marsh. It is probably the earliest surviving image of this Bacchus Marsh pre-gold rush structure.Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph.
